$25 Windows 98 PC from Savers: Repair and Software Restore

- I bought a 25-year-old PC, a Compaq Presario 5610, from a thrift store. This PC came with a Quantum Bigfoot, a weird hard drive that's too big to fit in most modern PCs. In this video, I give it a test, restore it to a proper OS with all of the original software, and explore what came on a Compaq in 1998.

I had a bigfoot drive. They weren't weird for the time as 5.25" hard drives were still a thing. They were far more space/weight/power friendly than the full height 5.25" drives which weighed like the bricks they were lol. They were cheap, but slow because of the lower rpms. Thanks for the video!
Cool! I’m surprised by that, none of my other 90s computers have 5.25” hard drives (my Sun Ultra 2 from 1995 doesn’t, for example.) I’m sure they must have made more sense as a budget option.

I love Quantum Bigfoot and if you compare to many other drives from that time they are actually very reliable. I been using Bigfoot drives in several computers ever since the 90s and they still work today. you should test your drive in a different computer to rule out power/connection issues and maybe run a scan of the media. it may be as simple as a few sectors needing to be re-mapped before it works again if that drive been mishandled or stored in a bad way if it is not a rare case of failure. The Bigfoot drives were actually built as a "budget" alternative to other drives, the bigger platter made it easier to get the same storage with less dense tracks and heads keeping the price down on the media, the downside of this is slower seek times since the heads are bigger and have longer area to travel across but at the same time with the bigger surface and physical sector size you got less chance of data failure compared to an equal size 3,5" drive. I had one Bigfoot die from surface failure and one that is in working but somewhat poor state but all other I have are still good, I have a dozen or so in total
That the motherboard has built in A3D support is pretty cool. I've seen a few of such boards, but none so far which support A3D 2.0.

I have similar period Gateway P2-200 - with all the original floppies and cd-roms
The original owner had destroyed the original HDD with a hammer to ensure no privacy issues.
The machine came with a built in zip drive and external scsi scanner, he was annoyed i did not take the HP Laserjet - i did not need it plus i dont have the space, in looking back i should but i asked him to advertise it and keep the money i did pay him the entire group amount anyway.
So, i may answer a few other questions here.
When repairing these old girls, keep you eye on the cold boot startup screen, some PC's you can use pause to actually pause the start up
With HDD issues especially on old machines, you should double check it appears in bios, it either will or it wont, or it will appear with wrong settings.
That era having usb will probably be Version 1 so only good for mouse and keyboard or very slow flash drive, i doubt it will boot of usb, however if it boots of zip drive or cdrom, i recommend linux puppy 3 or 4 or 5 - get the 32bit NON PAE in most cases.
It is about 80 meg compressed, you can run it of a cdrom iso, i use it often on old machines as it is great for identifying hardware and also picking up files on old fat32 and NTFS hardrives that do not have files protected by drivelocker
Stock win95 or Win98 will work, but check the specs for Win98Se, it is much improved and while you can load a web browser, it is more usefull to connect up to Win windows 10/11 machines - on Win 10 and newer - Note you will need to edit your Win10 settings to allow SMB1.0 If you do not from Win98 you can see modern win 10 shares but cannot get to the files. You will have to get up and walk to the Win10 machine - you will see the win98 shares and you can pick up and drop files - depending on the folders permissions - Also Win98SE you have to enable password login - annoying but trivial
Do you need retro images, go to winworld and browse they have up to Win2000 available, also most Win95 install you can use all 0 or all 1 as the serial number - that is another story, but all the winworld images are clean microsoft copies with usable serial numbers, on line registration became a thing with XP. Some XP machines i reinstall i have to wait a few days to have the registration work - i dont think the old XP activation servers work 24/7
Other PC's if you have a famous brand eg IBM, Lenovo, HP, Dell, Compaq try the manufacturers web site, many still have support to XP and if you are lucky 95/98
The good part is Win3x / 95 / 98 use mainly 3rd party devices and some of them still have drivers on line today

Win95 came out the same time the 1.44 3.5 floppy was popular so it was almost the death of 5.25 drives, luckily the floppy drive bay fitted IDE / CROM / USB / CF card
Dont want to swap floppies - you should not plus the media fails, get a GOTEK you can store 1,000 floppy images on a small usb stick - that is 1.4GB - i have one and dos is on slots 1 to 10. Windows 2 install on 20 to 29, Win 3 on 30 to 39 etc win 95 breaks rules it is 50 to 60, win 98 70 to 80 etc
Drivers are on 100 to 200
Games are 200 onwards etc
The N-drive i am guessing was set up as (N)etwork drive, if you used novel or anything with a NIC that has a eprom they map F drive - just my guess - but you would have found that in autoexec.bat and config.sys
Google for Hirens - and BartPE CDROM - get the XP one so you can use it on win 9x and Win XP, there is also a win 7 and win 10 version grab them as well
Finally get Ventoy, you can then place all your ISO and tools on a single 4gb usb stick ( 2gb if you dont want win10 install image ) i have all win iso on it plus office and some linux ones, as well as 4 or 5 cdroms full of dos shareware games

They are so slow, at a whopping 3600RPM
Actually back in the day they were very reliable.
Stick a 3Dfx Voodoo 3 3000 and a Creative Sound Blaster AWE 64 into that thing and you have a pretty nice machine.
Most of the Compaq's have the HDD including Bigfoots above the Optical drive. I had a 5610 I think it was 5610 and it was a model sold at Radio Shack.
5.25" hard drive was a pretty odd choice for 1998.
They assigned the letter n to the optical drive because that drive letter seemed so illogical for a standalone mounted optical drive, they figured that nobody would try to access it using that letter 😁
The software designer was having a bad hairdo day on that day, I guess.
The official MS boot disks for win98 and winme use the letter R for the optical drive.

where can I get factory restor disc for my older pcs windows 2000 - 7 Era computers. I just wanted to restore them back to oem.
