3:35 Change your fingering. It is much more convenient to do 3 + 4 fingers. Go CDE 123 finger, then put your thumb on the F key: FGAH C - 1234 5. Your thumb shall always be on C and F.
Great lesson. You really explained that well. I thought I understood swing rhythm, but I understand much more after watching this. Thanks. Are the swing feel and a shuffle feel the same?
Hello, your channel is very qualitative thank you. I understand now the swing effect. Is it possible instead of putting the second note after the straigh position (to get the swing), to put it before the straigh position. If yes, what is the name of that type of swing ? We usually see in the MAO a percent to indicate the swing to switch (45% 66% etc...) What is the correspondance with that concept of after ? 0% means no swing ? If yes, I want to get a "before swing" is there any negative percent ?
I think this is a bit of a stretch. Both songs are electro-swing, so share that same rhythm. If you listen to a lot of music from that genre, you'll notice similarities to Hells Greatest dad as a result. Mimsy being the same vocalist makes them sound closer, but I don't think the song was made as a reference or has any particularly references.
I understand. However I don't think I would know how to play swing against regular 2 like you demoed at the end. Do you think you could do a demo in how to put those 2 beats together. Great explanation of swing.
Besides for the technical practice of it, I'm not sure how many songs have straight quarter notes and swung quarter notes playing side by side like his demo. I just assume he was playing those side by side for demonstration purposes, to demonstrate the swung note falls after the straight one.
Nice explanation. Two questions arise: [1] Is shuffle rhythm the same as swing rhythm or just a specail case of swing, ie shuffle is a subset of swing? [2] If the 2nd note is played earlier (say, between 0.05 to 0.45 of a second, in your example) is it still swing? I understand that swing is related to delaying a note, but in context of the 2nd note the 3rd would be delayed and so on!
In the picture at the beginning of the video, I know you mean that the 1 and & are eighth notes not quarters as pictured. But having clarified that they are 8th notes and that they are being swung rather than played straight, what happens to 16th notes that could sub-divide these swung 8th notes? Are the two 16th notes on the long first 8th note twice as long as two 16th notes on the second 8th note? Or once we start swinging the 8th notes, is any further subdivision of notes just nonsensical at that point? Thanks for any insight you can provide on this.
Isn't this more of a shuffle feel / a dated idea of swing? Don't players play more behind the beat with accents on the off beat? Rather than playing a triplet feel?
Isn't "playing behind the beat with accents on the offbeat" just playing a binary beat in a triplet feel? I think swing is just based on a personal feeling of the one who plays Swing. If you add a more laid back feel to your "shuffled beat" you'll get what you just described... When I understand your comment right or did I get you wrong?
Playing the triplet is a mechanical way of doing the swing. A good swing is based on feel and listening to a lot of swing. If anyone thinks swinging quavers is complex, wait until you see how they swing their semiquavers in batucada. There is no way to notate it precisely. You have to listen and feel.
You could notate every note by milllisecond and actually get that but why would you? Its not actually making anything complicated, just that its easier to learn it by listening than formulating an irregular rhythm in our head. The truth is we're using conventions to understand it though its harder to understand them than just do them. If you're smart you'd do them both, this shouldn't be a rigid rule to what swing is, just that it serves so that you get an idea, and when you know enough you can tell where the simplified idea is too simple and when to make exceptions.
so swing is a delayed middle note of a triplet . correct me if I am wrong. the bass guitar or fcleff on piano can play a straight pattern . c e g a bflat a g e and ECT... can we play these notescompletely straight and say 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and....the notes in base would be all eighth notes....the right hand could just play one note say a c note at a swing rhythm..in this case the right hand would be controlling the rhythm but the left would be controlling the tempo or beats per minute or even simplifying it further play a base c note at four bests a measure and do the swing c note on right hand... this may be wrong..if it is wrong please clarify .
Hi, So couple points: 1. Swing is a a delayed second eighth note. It's like playing a triplet while skipping the middle triplet. Just to clarify. 2. Yep, you're right. If the left hand just plays quarter notes in 4/4 time, it's just keeping the beat/tempo and not swinging. Then the melody part (right hand on a piano) can play the swing rhythm by swinging the 8th notes.
One of the easiest ways is to write a tempo marking that looks like this b570f299d8a96ff32c59-2e725a51007a5cce3182c57bd45640f2.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/images/lessons/shuffle-markings.jpg
sometime in medium swing, like tempo 80-100,the solo and comping not so swing,in some situations, more like 16 notes?because its like double time feel?and I saw many transcription score, when musician solo, like a rhythm( x xx)---an 8 note + two 16note in one time,is it still swing or double time feel?3Q!
Yes, if it's a very fast tempo it is harder to keep the beat swinging. But it is possible to swing 16th notes, it just takes lots more effort and skill.
I think you are actually playing a dotted rhythm in the example, not a swung rhythm. In your played example, you are diving up the beat into quarters as opposed to thirds as you described it.
Isn't your triplet explanation at 3:40 not just two quavers? "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and", I'm not hearing this middle note inbetween each click, I'm just hearing two straight quavers. Have I misunderstood something here?
So triplets by their very nature already have a swing feel. The triplet feel IS the swing feel. Playing triplets over jazz or blues sounds great and swings great. 16th notes often are not swung, but can be if you like, just like 8th notes but faster.
It's sad you had to make this video, the first one was perfect and concise for me. But I get it not everyone already knows the basics before they jump into this, so this covers it from the ground up. I just find it sad because I like it when you explain fast, saves me time to do other things during my day. Either everyone else is slow or they have lots of time to kill.
Mate its only 10 minutes. If you want a faster video find another one. Theres no reason for you to state your opinion here; no one asked for you to speak. This video is meant for slower learners, and people who can spare a few minutes to learn some interesting stuff.
Why am i doing this i have stuff to do I DONT EVEN HAVE A PIANO
I just want to give this guy some credit for perfectly playing the straight rhythm and swing rhythm simultaneously on the piano!
it’s a great skill!! Polyrhythm is so cool
wow. that was the clearest definition of this concept that i have ever seen. strong work, man.
+TNPurves Thanks, TNPurves.
exactly what tnpcurves said, thank you.
Cheers, moedemama :)
One who knows something well can explain it simply. Thanks - you did.
Bravo!! , such an excellent explanation! I'm going to send this link to my students- I can't explain it any better!
Agreed, this is the clearest explanation I've ever heard of swing rhythm. Thank you!
Few years later and I am the beginner of piano found this clip is the best one which explain sthe swing so easily to learn. Thanks so much!
Trying to learn this as a singer and this is the best video I’ve found. Thank you!
3:35 Change your fingering. It is much more convenient to do 3 + 4 fingers.
Go CDE 123 finger, then put your thumb on the F key: FGAH C - 1234 5.
Your thumb shall always be on C and F.
So this is a breakdown:
Straight - 12 12 12 12 1
Triplet - 123 123 123 123 1
Swing - 1(2)3 1(2)3 1(2)3 1(2)3 1
What is the rythmic difference between this
And a dotted quaver followed by a semi quaver??
Thank-you for being so patient and explaining that concept to the mind of a child
I can say the truth.... that you are one of the best teachers on RUclips... Thanks for your lessons..
Excellent. Very well explained! I love the mathematical approach.
Probably the best example I've ever seen explaining swing. Thanks so much!
Great lesson. You really explained that well. I thought I understood swing rhythm, but I understand much more after watching this. Thanks. Are the swing feel and a shuffle feel the same?
Yes.
In "normal" swing you swing on the quaver.
In shuffle you swing on the semi-quaver.
Oh Man! From Zero to Swing. Fantastic!!! A big Thank You!
Finally The best solution for my Confusion. You did it. I cant Thank You Enough
Very clear and enormously helpful. Thanks.
you couldn´'nt have explained better! so clear!
Excellent. I'm a guitar and bass player and found this so easy to understand! Thanks
Mate tried to explain it to me and he's either shit at explaining or my brain is french, but watching your video it became as clear as water. Thanks!
The best video that i've ever seen about swing❤️
This was so incredibly helpful! Thank you very much for explaining this
No worries, Micah.
Best explanation so far.
Amazing! playing swing on one hand, and on the other hand not playing swing! Also great explanation!
Oh shit wtf 😂😂 I never seen a concept explained so clearly in my life
6:09 Cool exercise!
Excellent! Very clear.
Thank you very much. Didn’t think I would ever figure swing out.
Extremely helpful! Thank you
Bro got that microtonal B note
Thank you. Also, credit to him for playing straight in left hand and swing in right
Thanks for posting this.
Very clearly explained!
Cheers, mate.

Thank you sir for breaking this down, very very clear!!
I think this is a bit of a stretch.

Nice! Great Explanation! Thank you and cheers from over the pond!
Cheers, mate :)
Monster of coordination, culture and Deep of rythm
Time stamp for my personal study. As you were ladies and gentlemen.
5:32 straight/swung together.
This is great. Thank you!
Very useful ! Chiarissimo , grazie
Great lesson bro
please make another video on explaining different variations within this swing rhythm whic apply to both blues and jazz
Thanks for the video sir! It was very informative.
Best description
Great explanation! Thank you so much!

thank you for these clear "instructions".
Dominique from France
No worries, Dominique :)
Greets from Australia.
(Sorry for the late reply. I was away on holiday for the last month.)
Very nice explanation.. Hat off.
Thank you for the lesson man. One question though, is swing and groove the same thing?
extremely well explained thank you

You dont need to do that ever in any song.. but its impressive he did it still
Excellent
Nice explanation, love the videos.
Thanks, mate.
Excellent. Really explicit.
Could you show swing after beats two and three with beats on one and 4?
EXCELLENT 👌🏼
Well explained, thanks man :)
Thanks, mate.
Whats the different between this and playing a dotted quaver followed by semi quater???
Thanks mate.
Is there a difference between shuffle and swing?
This is a great lesson but you have notated the quavers as crotchets.
Nice explanation. Two questions arise: [1] Is shuffle rhythm the same as swing rhythm or just a specail case of swing, ie shuffle is a subset of swing? very good videos. Thanks man!
Thank, mate :)
And thanks for the comments.

Every swing song be like C5 C5 A#4 A#4 G#5 G#5
👍👍👍👍 thank you sir
thank you very much was very helpfull
How do I write that in Sheet music?
One of the easiest ways is to write a tempo marking that looks like this b570f299d8a96ff32c59-2e725a51007a5cce3182c57bd45640f2.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/images/lessons/shuffle-markings.jpg

Isn't your triplet explanation at 3:40 not just two quavers? "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and", I'm not hearing this middle note inbetween each click, I'm just hearing two straight quavers. Have I misunderstood something here?
that piano needs tuning
The B was off. Nonetheless, excellent explanation.
the thing is I was wondering how do you count swing triplets and 16th notes?
So triplets by their very nature already have a swing feel. The triplet feel IS the swing feel. Playing triplets over jazz or blues sounds great and swings great.
16th notes often are not swung, but can be if you like, just like 8th notes but faster.
Sorry, but what happens with sixteenth notes in swung rhythm?
I'm still working on the whole chewing gum and walking thing.

Hvis is til tech for beginners, ind trods tired before the end

Is it just me, or is that B really out of tune ?!
I don’t even know why tf am I in here, don’t even have a piano
Swang??
