I definitely want a service dog in the future to take to volunteer at nursing homes and hospitals to cheer people up

That would actually be a therapy dog, not a service dog. Service dogs are for only one person and help them mitigate their disability. While therapy dogs are for several people and help them collectively like what you want to do.
