Congratulations to Yastramenska, you played outstanding and is definitely one for the future.
For Wang though, this was a match that was just too much for her.
She has played so many matches in a short amount of time and it caught up to her.
Don't forget she had to finish off Svitolina and then be in another match that was over 2 and a half hours against Muguruza, so physically and mentally she wasn't there and I think had Zhang got through, the same fate would have happened.
Tennis is a tough sport, I should know, i just played it today lol

I think that 18 year-old just played the best base line game i've seen from a woman. If she can play 80% of this consistently she can be among the 3-4 best. This depth and power would win the best defender. She will be a nightmare to face for anyone no matter what.

    • @egtplays

I agree. Not to take anything away from Yastremska but you could literally see the difference of play in Wang's earlier rounds to this round.
Yes Wang was outplayed, but it would have been a much closer match if she had been near 100%.
Also, Wang wouldn't have let her play as well as she did.
I think the best thing for her now is to sit out the next tournament and come back with better health.

So happy for Yastremska. Osaka as US Open winners, Sabalenka with sensational performance (and that Wuhan title as the latest trophy), Danilovic won Moscow River Cup (against Potapova), 2 finals for Potapova (+ Tashkent) and now this. Add Anisimova, Vondrousova, Kenin, Kostyuk and many youngsters, hope they can crack deeper to the ranking and the tournaments. Please be more consistent, girls.

Played life best (yet 18 yrs old) game. Even better performance than in her previous match with another notable Chinese Zhang. For Wang, options were literally limited, not much could be done. • @wyt168

You can see that Wong's shots were not as deep or as wicked as in other other games. I think she was just physically and emotionally drained from her game with Mugurusa the day before, a 3-setters in which she lost the first set, had to rally from behind (down 0-3 in third) in the following two sets to win the 2 hr 40 min marathon. And this was after she has to concentrate and finish another rain-delayed game with world #4 Svitlena earlier in the day. It was terrible scheduling but then everyone has to face the same tough schedule.
Well, stars have aligned for Yastremska this time but not to take away from her, she had to beat all others to reach the final, . They have plenty opportunities to meet each other. I hope both will do well next season.

You could see she was physically and mentally exhausted. I think even Zhang could have beaten her, though not to take anything away from Yastramenska as she played brilliant but Wang has played so many matches in such a short amount of time and yesterday had to win 2 matches, the first one she needed to finish off and the second was of course the 2 hour and 40 minute match.
As you also saw she had those bandages around her legs.
She was just not up to it.

This is what expectations and pressure does to your game. We sit back in our couch and mock Federer and others.... imagine if Wang could.get so tight with a few wins how it is to be a tennis superstar?
Tennis is more mental than physical. That explains why some people just dont deliver on a given day. And coupled with an opponent who has nothing to lose... then its sure defeat..

Another flavor of the week on the Ford model T assembly line. Baseline basher, no plan B, looks good when plan A working, but nothing to fall back on to when it's not working. Consistency and the ability to win when your A game is not working is the mark of a true champion. We've seen plenty like her. Her game is no different from Sabalenka, Vekic or even past bashers like Aravene Rezai. The WTA is full of these players. Can beat anyone when their incessant bashing is working but will lose in straights to weaponless players because they self-destruct and can't problem-solve.
