I think this has to be one of the most recognizable songs in history for being a tv show theme song. You can't hear this without thinking of the Golden Girls show. So recognizable. Iconic.
Andrew's mom, singer Marni Nixon, and my parents were close friends when they were in their late teens, and I grew up playing with Andy during family get-togethers, so I'm really happy you've finally discovered him. My favorite song of his was his top-10 hit, "Lonely Boy," if you're interested in listening to more of his music. I notice that many other comments mention how "Thank You for Being a Friend" was the theme song for The Golden Girls, but he also performed "Final Frontier," the theme song for another popular TV show, Mad About You.
I remember watching Marni Nixon in Boomerang and thinking for a local children's TV show it was as good, if not better, than Sesame Street. I guess the Emmy's agreed with me seeing as the show won 20+ times. Bing, Bong, Bang.......... Bing, Bong, Bang.......... It’s Boomerang! Bing, Bong, Bang...........Bing, Bong, Bang...........It’s Boomerang!
WOW, what a career she's had!! I knew she sang for Deborah Kerr, Natalie Wood and Audrey Hepburn; but didn't realize she sang as Grandma Fa in Mulan!! She was also one of the Nuns in Sound of Music. Such a talented singer!! 🎶
Are you sure you aren't thinking of Peter Asher? Asher is the whitest, most pale faced dude I've ever seen. He had no color in his face. Great singer, producer.
Golden Girls theme song! This song makes you smile and watching the Golden Girls makes you laugh! So sad when the last "Girl", Betty White passed away at the end of 2021. Luckily they gave us 7 seasons of humor and friendship to watch. Watched with my mom - it was her favorite show. So this song reminds me of them and her now that both she and they are gone. Thanks for the smile! 🥰
That's how your subscribers feel about you, Amber and Jay. You give sincere and insightful comments, but in such a casual way that we feel almost like your extended family. Love and hugs to you and your family.
and Never Let Her Slip Away. I think this was his biggest hit in the UK . I also like Andrew's later collaboration in Wax with Graham Gouldman from 10CC. RIP Andrew .
I’ve only heard vaguely of the Golden Girls, don’t think it was that popular on British TV.. Sorry, I’m not a fan of this song as I associate it with John Humble, The Yorkshire Ripper hoaxer, people of a certain age will remember that he sent letters and a tape to the Police ... a snippet of this song was played on the tape

You will see Andrew Gold in several Linda Ronstadt live videos as he was her bandleader 1973-1977 and continued to write, arrange, and play sessions for her afterwards and would sporadically join her for tours.
His mother was Marni Nixon,, the "ghost singer" voice for Natalie Wood in West Side Story, Deborah Kerr in The King And I and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady (all musicals) because none of the actresses were singers.
Marni was also one of the singing nuns in "The Sound of Music" who performed "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" (When I'm with her I'm confused, out of focus and bemused...)
Fun fact: Linda Ronstadt's version of You're No Good - Andrew Gold plays the lead guitar on that song! Linda's vocal and Andrew's guitar solo make that song so darn good!!
This was just one of those special little songs that put a smile on your face and made you think of how lucky you are to have those special people in your life. 💞
Liked this song and the cover of it did complement "Golden Girls." My favorite of his is the autobiographical "Lonely Boy." His work with Linda Ronstadt throughout the mid-late 70s was superb. Gone too soon. RIP, Andrew.
Andrew Gold, an incredibly talented songwriter and multi instrumentalist. He was Linda Ronstadt's guitar/piano player for several years. A talent gone way too soon. RIP Andrew Gold, a great loss to music.
Speaking of Linda Ronstadt, she sang the backing vocals on Andrew's only Top Ten hit "Lonely Boy." Jay and Amber LOVE Linda Ronstadt -so they definitely need to react to "Lonely Boy"
This song always brightens my mood and makes me think about my friends and family! 😎 A cover version was used as the theme for The Golden Girls. Andrew Gold was also a producer and he performed on several of Linda Ronstadt's hits like "You're No Good". More gold from Andrew Gold you need to check out: "Lonely Boy", "Can Anybody See You", "How Can This Be Love", "One Of Them Is Me" and "The Final Frontier" (theme for the sitcom Mad About You).

Betty White was the last living Golden Girl until her death in 2022. She was 99 (about 2 weeks shy of her 100th). RIP to all of the Golden Girls! You and this song will forever be etched into my memories & my heart. ❤❤❤❤
Great band and singer! Andrew Gold and his band was Linda Ronstadt’s band for a few years as one of her guitarists and vocals. He would play before her and then Linda would join the band after the intermission for her concert! That was in the early 80’s.
His musical talent came naturally since his mother (Marni Nixon) was a classically trained soprano singer and his father (Ernest Gold composed the music for a number of films. His mother was known for being the actual singing voice of top actresses in Hollywood musicals. Andrew Gold actually died on this date in 2011, just two months away from turning 60..
I remember growing up and watching a local kids' show called Boomerang, and Marni Nixon was the host. I can sing the theme song even today! Her voice over work is so prolific!
Andrew Gold was Linda Ronstadt's right hand man through much of the seventies. When watching some of Linda's videos you'll see him, the redhead playing guitar, especially lead.
Is it weird that this song makes me want to curl up on the couch and watch the "Golden Girls"? This is the ultimate feel good song. The full version of this song is amazing. "I wanna thank you..." is my favorite part. Andrew Gold has a great voice.
Andrew was such a kind and happy guy, as well as an amazing songwriter/vocalist/musician. You GOTTA listen to more from him. For his solo stuff, I'd go with "Lonely Boy", "Falling Down", "Pal Of Mine", and so many others next. I'd also listen to the band "Wax", which is Andrew Gold & Graham Gouldman (from the band 10cc). They have so many great songs, like "Wherever You Are", "In Some Other World", "Maybe", "First Time In Love", and so many more. Check it all out! RIP Andrew Gold.
Everyone talks about the Golden Girls, but this song takes me back to 1978 and 6th grade when it was on the radio and will always remind me of my friends back then.
As you both observed, this is a terrific song on the topic of friendship. I would also recommend Queen's song "You're My Best Friend"...... Everybody knows, loves and talks about Bohemian Rhapsody but, "You're My Best Friend" is my favorite Queen song
I remember when this song came out (yes, I am that old) and it hit #1. And I remember years later when "Golden Girls" premiered and I thought it was great that they used one of my favorite songs from high school at the theme. But now most people didn't know this was a hit song BEFORE it became the TV theme! You need to also listen to his other fantastic #1 hit - "Lonely Boy."

100% right on, Amber. I have lost touch with people along the way, but some of the most rewarding experiences in life have been with the people who loved and accepted me enough to be called "friend." My best friend and I are coming up on our 40 year "Friendiversary" in a couple of months, and I'm hoping we'll get some of our other college friends to visit as well, even though we are in different countries, and different continents. I feel so blessed not just to have known these special people, but to have known them in a time that allows us to stay in touch while so far away. I know you get it, but I'll say it anyway - good friends, real friends, aren't easily either made or replaced in later life. So don't take the ones you have for granted. Like all relationships, friendships need attention, investment, and nurturing. Be the friend you want to have, and keep the ones that make you better people. Thank YOU Jay and Amber for playing "Thank You For Being A Friend" by the great, great Andrew Gold (R.I.P) Also, did you know that he was Linda Ronstadt's lead guitarist and band leader in the early days of her career. He work a lot on Linda Ronstadt`s albums and live shows and also on Art Garfunkle`s solo Breakaway album. My favorite song of his is Never Let her Slip Away.
All the way back in 1985 I used this as the backing song for a graduation video I created for my college class (lucky enough to have access to an editing studio on the campus). So this song has a lot of memories attached to it.
I've always loved this song! And Amber, it makes my heart smile to hear you talk about your friend group.
I've read about and heard about friends like this, but I've moved around so much in my life I never was able to develop close friendships. I love love LOVE hearing about them! Bless you and all your close friends!
