Ever thought about a bioactive care guide? Just general preparation, isopod, and watering guide?
I've made several :)
There are a few things about Megalania that I would think should be considered:
First, probably the best current day comparison in terms of size and shape would be the Saltwater Crocodile. They also get up to ~20ft and are also quadrupedal, dangerous predatory reptiles from Australia.
Second, Megalania has something that none of the others really has: cultural significance. While it's obviously not proven that they are in fact referring to Megalania, there are stories and paintings that have been passed down by the Aboriginal Australians about a beast that has clear resemblances to Megalania.
Third, another cultural significance can be summed up in two words: "Jurassic Park". While actual (non-avian) dinosaurs are far too old and farfetched for anything resembling restoration, Megalania is a 'Terrible Lizard' (according to the original ideas that went into the naming of 'dinosaur') that is not too old and does have close living relatives. I would put the motivation by some people toward restoring Megalania far higher than what you have... though obviously the science involved remains the most difficult compared to the others.
I can’t believe people are complaining about a thumbnail. I understand the time it saves and allows you to put more effort into your videos/patreon/content. Please keep up with the great work Adam, love the channel. From the U.K.
I didn't even make it, my thumbnail guy has been using this type of AI for months and nobody commented until now. I think many people don't realize nearly half the content they consume is generated or enhanced with AI.
@@WickensWickedReptiles"people didn't notice" doesn't mean that this is okay
Agreed, I guess it’s a sign you’re doing well, if that’s what people are picking out suddenly. All the best.
@@WickensWickedReptiles"ive been getting away with this bad thing for months now but people are only complaining now that they've found out ive been doing the bad thing"
Huh???
What's wrong with using AI for thumbnails? People will complain about anything these days!
Great video as always
This is the one I wanted to see thank you.
hope you enjoyed!
Super interesting. I’ve seen a lot of these videos and I think this was the most unique of species that aren’t really talked about. Background was really interesting on each one of them as well.
great vid!
Really cool video make it a series. The micro chameleon is super adorable
more to come!
Not a reptile but there is discussions about bringing the gastic brooding (Rheobatrachus spp) frogs in Australia.
I say discussion but work has actually been done to see how viable it could be
Great video
thank you!
You know the Jamaican galliwasp might still be around. The Jamaican iguana was believed to be extinct but was rediscovered in the 1990's I believe.. Anyway there is a big galliwasp that is found in Hispaniola they were exported from Haiti back when this was a thing.
About Galapagos tortoises, I asked some people from the Hawaii Herptoloical society where the tortoises at the Honolulu zoo came from whether they were brought by whalers since I saw a very large and geriatric one off exhibit. I was told most of them were brought by "yachtsmen" sailing to Hawaii for fun back in the day would pick up tortoise and leave them as gifts in different ports. I was told there are Galapagos tortoises in Tahiti that got there this way. Back in the late 1970's the zoo had some Hood island tortoises IIRC. I asked about these animals and was told they probably followed the reptile curator to San Diego. Maybe they ended up back at Darwin station for captive breeding. Saddle back tortoises are really neat.
If you want to ruin this with an amphibian you should think about the Costa Rican Golden Toad that was found in very large numbers but in very limited range it is believed to have died out due to a disease being introduced.
love this! thanks for sharing!
Lovely video❤
Thank you 🤗
This is very interesting and I hope that they can be brought back from extinction and others as well. I hope you have a fantastic day and weekend
Thanks, you too!
This new update sounds in sane!!!! 😮
This is so cool
oh thank you!
I'll take a velociraptor as they were actually the size of chickens! Make great guard animals or throw the chimps out for them to eat!
Hi I have a question about crested geckos, could you possibly recommend me a good substrate to use? I'm currently using Eco Earth loose coconut fiber substrate, but I've been noticing every few days I have to scoop out small white little fuzzy patches, and I don't feel like it's good to keep my crested in an enclosure with this substrate long term, I'm currently using a non bioactive enclosure, I plan on going bioactive eventually
Who doesn't want their very own 23ft long monitor lizard, about as close as you could get to an actual non-avian dinosaur. It will be all fun and games until one eats its owner, and I have no doubt a 23ft long monitor would consider a human to be prey.
I wish they could bring back my faith in humanity
oh absolutely!
I don't think I know of any evidence to suggest this might be possible. But if there are Pinto island hybrid tortoises, it would be really neat if two hybrids of the same type could potentially reproduce making pure bred offspring of the Pinto island and whichever other species was part of the hybrid.
wouldn't that be so cool!
For some brought back animals it would make sense to release them, especially if they went extinct recently. With others (like Megalania or Mammoths) it would be best to just keep them in zoo's. Kinda like a Jurassic Park.
As to prevent extinction, apart from zoo's the reptile hobbyists should be actively used to help species. Due to the hobby there are still a huge amount of Axolotls on this planet.
Tell me man, my crested gecko always ate pangea food since I have him for like 2yrs and a half, last week I bought some new food that my pet shop recommended me and he refused to eat it.. ordered pangea and he didn't hesitate to devour it 😂 is it normal for them to be kinda exquisite with food or he's just purely used to pangea? Props!
I never knew there were micro chameleons! They are so cute!
Bring back the tuatara! I know they aren't extinct-- yet-- which is why it's best to start bringing them back while they still live.
Bring them back where? The main islands of New Zealand? A fine idea, but keep in mind they were extinct there before Europeans even colonized New Zealand, but continued to thrive on a few dozen offshore islands. And while certain populations are endangered, the tuatara is overall listed as least concern.
Herbivores possibly, carnivorous no. Dinosaurs definitely. But ultimately anything that hasnt gone extinct by our hand shouldn’t be brought back
Most interesting extinct reptile species to me? Triceratops! But the likelihood of it returning would be extremely small. :(
As for more recent reptiles (when humans existed): Meiolania, a turtle that looks like an Ankylosaurus.
Spikey tail and horns on its head. A turtle can't get any cooler than this!
Imagine having basically a small Ankylosaurus as a pet. :D
such a cool species!
I have a question for Adam and all the other more experienced keepers out there. I am moving long distance (over 1,500 miles) and am bringing my reptiles with me. The one I am most concerned about is my leachie. Because I am moving in the summer and they don't have a great tolerance for a lot of heat, what can I do to make sure that my animals are safe in transit? I'm especially worried for when I need to make a stop off, like for lunch. Can't leave them in the car to roast. Shipping them isn't really an option because don't have someone at the destination to receive them. Any advice?
What about kawekaweyu?
Surprised you didn't mention the giant softshell turtle, or the Fernandina tortoise (one known living specimen) of the Galapagos...
they fit too!
I like the idea of de-extinction (in practice once done it would be little different from restoring species that are nearly extinct or have been extinct in the wild for many years), but I think a lot of people talking about it put too little emphasis on the fact that we have yet to actually do it with any species, let alone ones that cannot be conventionally cloned (i.e. egg laying animals). The closest we've come that I'm aware of is a extinct subspecies of ibex, and the one success died shortly after birth due to a birth defect. I'd like it to be proven it can actually be done successfully with a placental mammal before we get our hopes up with species that would be even more difficult to do (i.e. egg layers).
Can’t wait to get some of these bois back. Great video Adam!
thank you!
The Australian megalizard is the one that always fascinated me. Its the closest humans ever came to living with dinosaur sized lizards. Might not be a Trex but its huge and coukd have preyed on humans. Only the gator/croc can realistically say that now besides the rare large snake.
such a cool species!
I think it is really sad that lot of reptiles species are endangered now because of the human activity. They survived the great extinction, lot of them are much older then dinosaurs. And now they may disappear because of us.
Megalonia sounds like the coolest one so far
oh absolutely is!
youd love ark. you can tame them and breed them
@@WickensWickedReptiles Of course saying they're cool and saying I want one are two different things. I'm impressed because it looks like they can tower over people by standing on their hind legs.
@@xpapakahn94I love ark
Not a reptile but they found an intact wooly mammoth baby a few weeks ago in the permafrost. Just FYI. Would be amazing to see one
isn't that just amazing!
Great mini class, I wasn't aware of these particular losses except the giant tortoise. It's always heartbreaking when we are responsible. China is no surprise, they eat everything, including the almost or maybe now extinct the giant salamander. We have got to get our act together. Thanks for the information Adam.👍❤️
thanks so much!
Genuine question, what would be the point in bringing them back? Unless they were going to be housed in Zoo's. I mean it be pointless bringing them back and releasing them back to the wild. The same threats are still there, arguably more so now than before. It just seems a pointless exercise bringing them back just to be wiped out again. Maybe we should concentrate on conserving what we have been left with. I don't have a problem with them coming back. Its what they would be coming back too is the issue.
If they did bring them back from extinction, I wonder if it’ll be like the Jurassic Park incident. Although that does sound fun.
what a wild time that would be
Surprised you wanna bring back a turtle species ☠️ (did you miss my comments 🤪)
.11 square miles is around 1/10 of a mile. so even worse yay :) i love humans
it's two pockets of avg 1.1 miles. so 2.2, but yes, math was never my strong point haha
You are the best RUclips ever have a awesome day have a cool day have a wonderful day good job
thank you!
They should definitely try to bring back the Megalonia. Why? For the pet trade, of course. Who wouldn't want a giant meat eating lizard for a pet? Of course, very few people would have the necessary space to keep something that large and probably fewer still could afford to feed it.
hahaha just make sure you have a 40 gallon for it
@@WickensWickedReptiles I think you forgot the "K" after 40 😂
I love the idea of de-extinction. I hope to see it in my lifetime. #TeamThylacine! Put the little chameleons in Florida. Florida is like the petri dish of reptiles. Everything thrives there, whether we want it to or not.
💜💚💜💜💚💜
might be an unpopular opinion but the extinct reptile i wanna see are dinosaurs 🦕 🦖
Put them in the caribbean, dominica to be exact , not dominican republic
Habitat destruction is heartbreaking, and infuriating..WTF are we doing to the planet?! And why, just so a small number of billionaires can have a few billion more? F them
Oh boy, I might regret asking but. Why is de-extinction considered controversial?
many people think it's "Playing God"
I truly believe they are gone let them be gone. Focus on what animals we have on earth now that we need to start conserving. There is so many animals, plants, insects and living organisms that are going extinct now because of a variety of reasons, mostly humans. Let’s fix that.
So no bringing back the tyrannosaur Rex, booo 😂 awesome video per usual brother 👍🏼 allegedly the delcourt's sticky tailed gecko is still alive so that’s be wild if that’s true! They’re 54% bigger than leachies. Supposedly some scientists know the trees where they live inside
😁
All I can say is that it depends on technology. So possibly one day we can. I hope to live long enough to see it cause I would love a jurassic park.
that would be so cool!
❤ love it ❤
:)
My opinion about de-extinction is this. Should we be spending all our time and resources on fixing our planet and conservation for what we have? Yes probably. Can humans collectively agree and work together to do that? So far no... I don't want to be morbid and pessimistic but honestly I think its realistic. We aren't going go enact changes in time. We are already seeing major horrifying natural disasters and it's getting worse each year that passes. So, imo, de-extinction technology and research may very well be a decent "insurance". Because once the destruction is done, its done and we are already in the middle of a mass extinction event. Also, a lot of research on new tech ends up yielding very surprising and useful results, sometimes not even related to the original goal or plan or intention. So I'm in support of it. There is a really big caveat to this. Everything is money motivated, for better or worse and I still think itll need regulation and control and a close eye. I really don't want Jurassic Park (although that might not even be possible). Humans tend to mess up ecosystems even when we are trying to help. There are very small nusnces with big impacts that we never seem to be able to predict of understand. So ultimately what we are doing is messing around with the evolutionary process, and as we speak, changes in organisms are happening. Evolution happens over a lot of generations in general, but we have already observed that drastic changes can happen in a very short amount of time. Its all worth consideration.
Birds are reptiles.
I like the info but i think everyone’s problem with the AI is that the general discourse is that it’s seen as a lazy cop out for the sake of efficiency. I think defending it over and over instead of actually taking the criticism into account might llevas to the pile on as well.
Bringing back animals that animals that went extinct because of human is definitely a good idea. It's not playing god its repairing the damage we caused. Dodo birds went extinct because of humans and the scientific community has the ability to bring them back. Species that have gone extinct or almost extinct because of humans should be saved. would it be cool to see dinosaurs yeah it would be but it wouldn't a good idea to bring back something like a T rex.
No offense but it’s Megalania
0:38 Deextinction is a waste of resources. 👎🏾 Resources that should be spent preserving and taking care of what presently exists. 👨🏾⚕ I do not count living animals such as the Yunnan box turtle as extinct. 🐢 In cases like the Yunnan, they should must definitely be prevented from going actually extinct.
5:08 Australia was and IS still a scary place! 😱
can you please make a video on reptiles with a bad rep that aren't actually that bad
sure can!
W Adam uploaded
any time!
Thing is animals go extinct and we also find new species all the time. The huge Komodo dragon needs to stay extinct because how deadly will they be if they were still alive. Dangerous to humans and to animals that are still alive. Just think animals that will go extinct because of the huge Komodo dragon.
Megalonia might well not be significantly more dangerous than the regular komodo dragon, since it's much slower. The biggest problem isn't its size, it's its location. Having a bunch of huge, venomous predatorial lizards on the island of komodo is pretty different from having them in Australia, even though Australia already has plenty of things that'll happily kill you in the first place. If we wanted to bring them back, we'd need to find them their own isolated island to live on.
@@norarivkis2513 I'm not really sure you have any idea, just how big Australia is, and how much of it is actually populated. Most of the population is centred on the coast. The inland areas are just vast areas of wilderness. It's not like other Western countries where they aim to cram as many people in as possible. I'm just saying they have the space and low population in relation to other countries to pull something like this off
@@TheCnutofMonteCristo Maybe they do. Depends a lot on what environments these lizards would be comfortable living in. I just don't know enough about them to be able to say, but you're right that it's at least possible.
What reason is there for de-extinction or conservation? These animals have had their time on Earth and were selected to go extinct. Sure, it was by humans, but nature does not care. The animals did not adapt, and so they went extinct. In my opinion, these human efforts are rather stubborn, arrogant even. Instead, humans should be adapting themselves and preparing to stop their own extinction, which could be coming quite soon. If they do not, the humans species will disappear and the Earth will forget them as soon as they leave.
TL;DR: Humans should stop worrying about conserving other animals and start preparing for their own extinction... and for the new world that climate change brings.
If you want a titanoboa as a pet, don't hold your breath.
oh for sure!
Box turtles can definitely be picked up at pet stores or ordered through them. Unlike bookstores and other kinds of stores, you have to pay for them before they order one for you.
..what?
@@WickensWickedReptiles If you go to a bookstore or a magic store, you can ask them to special order illusions and books and wait until they come in before you pay for them. With the last bookstore, I had a wait or pay option so I chose to pay for the book before it came in.
i'm all for de-extinction
such a cool concept
Okay, I guess this is complicated because it depends on where you feel your sense of morality comes from. If you reverence nature as some kind of unquestionable source of morality then maybe you'd say (like Ian Malcolm) that things should not be brought back if they went extinct by non-human means. Or if you felt that no animal should exist unless it exists in a free natural environment where it belongs then i could see opposing bringing back animals because they would either be invasive anywhere they exist (assuming they are a truly ancient species) or they'd be strictly limited to captivity .
Now i have no problem with animals existing in captivity provided we do a good job giving them space, privacy, good care and appropriate stimulation. So I'm totally fine with bringing back animals that don't have a good place in nature. And I'm certainly on board for bringing back animals that have appropriate place in nature such as animals that only recently went extinct.
well put!
Or doesn't smell at all after so much time.
ok
De extinction I feel would work best in a controlled and remote environment
no doubt!
There are lots of dinosaurs I'd like to be brought back, but I know enough not to expect it.
no doubt!

The fact that you decided to double down instead of hearing artists out is the real heartbreaker in all honesty.
AI thumbnails? C'mon dude, just commission a paleo-artists. There are people who dedicate their whole lives and careers to paleo-art.
When people talks about to bring animals back often they don't enough about the technology. The idea is to take sperm(create it) and put it in a similar animal (female ofc.). You will never get the exact animal back. Anyone who says that, has not understood the idea.
I cringe every time someone talks about bringing mammoths back. The idea here is to use an elephant as a host. You will not get an mammoth from that
