There are a few things about Megalania that I would think should be considered:
First, probably the best current day comparison in terms of size and shape would be the Saltwater Crocodile. They also get up to ~20ft and are also quadrupedal, dangerous predatory reptiles from Australia.
Second, Megalania has something that none of the others really has: cultural significance. While it's obviously not proven that they are in fact referring to Megalania, there are stories and paintings that have been passed down by the Aboriginal Australians about a beast that has clear resemblances to Megalania.
Third, another cultural significance can be summed up in two words: "Jurassic Park". While actual (non-avian) dinosaurs are far too old and farfetched for anything resembling restoration, Megalania is a 'Terrible Lizard' (according to the original ideas that went into the naming of 'dinosaur') that is not too old and does have close living relatives. I would put the motivation by some people toward restoring Megalania far higher than what you have... though obviously the science involved remains the most difficult compared to the others.

You know the Jamaican galliwasp might still be around. The Jamaican iguana was believed to be extinct but was rediscovered in the 1990's I believe.. Anyway there is a big galliwasp that is found in Hispaniola they were exported from Haiti back when this was a thing.
About Galapagos tortoises, I asked some people from the Hawaii Herptoloical society where the tortoises at the Honolulu zoo came from whether they were brought by whalers since I saw a very large and geriatric one off exhibit. I was told most of them were brought by "yachtsmen" sailing to Hawaii for fun back in the day would pick up tortoise and leave them as gifts in different ports. I was told there are Galapagos tortoises in Tahiti that got there this way. Back in the late 1970's the zoo had some Hood island tortoises IIRC. I asked about these animals and was told they probably followed the reptile curator to San Diego. Maybe they ended up back at Darwin station for captive breeding. Saddle back tortoises are really neat.
If you want to ruin this with an amphibian you should think about the Costa Rican Golden Toad that was found in very large numbers but in very limited range it is believed to have died out due to a disease being introduced.

But if there are Pinto island hybrid tortoises, it would be really neat if two hybrids of the same type could potentially reproduce making pure bred offspring of the Pinto island and whichever other species was part of the hybrid.

For some brought back animals it would make sense to release them, especially if they went extinct recently. With others (like Megalania or Mammoths) it would be best to just keep them in zoo's. Kinda like a Jurassic Park.
As to prevent extinction, apart from zoo's the reptile hobbyists should be actively used to help species. Due to the hobby there are still a huge amount of Axolotls on this planet.

A fine idea, but keep in mind they were extinct there before Europeans even colonized New Zealand, but continued to thrive on a few dozen offshore islands. The one I am most concerned about is my leachie. Because I am moving in the summer and they don't have a great tolerance for a lot of heat, what can I do to make sure that my animals are safe in transit? I'm especially worried for when I need to make a stop off, like for lunch. Can't leave them in the car to roast. Shipping them isn't really an option because don't have someone at the destination to receive them. Any advice?

I like the idea of de-extinction (in practice once done it would be little different from restoring species that are nearly extinct or have been extinct in the wild for many years), but I think a lot of people talking about it put too little emphasis on the fact that we have yet to actually do it with any species, let alone ones that cannot be conventionally cloned (i.e. egg laying animals). The closest we've come that I'm aware of is a extinct subspecies of ibex, and the one success died shortly after birth due to a birth defect. I'd like it to be proven it can actually be done successfully with a placental mammal before we get our hopes up with species that would be even more difficult to do (i.e. egg layers).

Genuine question, what would be the point in bringing them back? Unless they were going to be housed in Zoo's. I mean it be pointless bringing them back and releasing them back to the wild. The same threats are still there, arguably more so now than before. It just seems a pointless exercise bringing them back just to be wiped out again. Maybe we should concentrate on conserving what we have been left with. I don't have a problem with them coming back. Its what they would be coming back too is the issue.

My opinion about de-extinction is this. Should we be spending all our time and resources on fixing our planet and conservation for what we have? Yes probably. Can humans collectively agree and work together to do that? So far no... I don't want to be morbid and pessimistic but honestly I think its realistic. We aren't going go enact changes in time. We are already seeing major horrifying natural disasters and it's getting worse each year that passes. So, imo, de-extinction technology and research may very well be a decent "insurance". Because once the destruction is done, its done and we are already in the middle of a mass extinction event. Also, a lot of research on new tech ends up yielding very surprising and useful results, sometimes not even related to the original goal or plan or intention. So I'm in support of it. There is a really big caveat to this. Everything is money motivated, for better or worse and I still think itll need regulation and control and a close eye. I really don't want Jurassic Park (although that might not even be possible). Humans tend to mess up ecosystems even when we are trying to help. There are very small nusnces with big impacts that we never seem to be able to predict of understand. So ultimately what we are doing is messing around with the evolutionary process, and as we speak, changes in organisms are happening. Evolution happens over a lot of generations in general, but we have already observed that drastic changes can happen in a very short amount of time. Its all worth consideration.

Bringing back animals that animals that went extinct because of human is definitely a good idea. It's not playing god its repairing the damage we caused. Dodo birds went extinct because of humans and the scientific community has the ability to bring them back. Thing is animals go extinct and we also find new species all the time. The huge Komodo dragon needs to stay extinct because how deadly will they be if they were still alive. • @norarivkis2513

Megalonia might well not be significantly more dangerous than the regular komodo dragon, since it's much slower. The biggest problem isn't its size, it's its location. Having a bunch of huge, venomous predatorial lizards on the island of komodo is pretty different from having them in Australia, even though Australia already has plenty of things that'll happily kill you in the first place. If we wanted to bring them back, we'd need to find them their own isolated island to live on.

What reason is there for de-extinction or conservation? These animals have had their time on Earth and were selected to go extinct. Sure, it was by humans, but nature does not care. The animals did not adapt, and so they went extinct. In my opinion, these human efforts are rather stubborn, arrogant even. Instead, humans should be adapting themselves and preparing to stop their own extinction, which could be coming quite soon. If they do not, the humans species will disappear and the Earth will forget them as soon as they leave.
TL;DR: Humans should stop worrying about conserving other animals and start preparing for their own extinction... and for the new world that climate change brings.

Okay, I guess this is complicated because it depends on where you feel your sense of morality comes from. If you reverence nature as some kind of unquestionable source of morality then maybe you'd say (like Ian Malcolm) that things should not be brought back if they went extinct by non-human means. Or if you felt that no animal should exist unless it exists in a free natural environment where it belongs then i could see opposing bringing back animals because they would either be invasive anywhere they exist (assuming they are a truly ancient species) or they'd be strictly limited to captivity .
Now i have no problem with animals existing in captivity provided we do a good job giving them space, privacy, good care and appropriate stimulation. So I'm totally fine with bringing back animals that don't have a good place in nature. And I'm certainly on board for bringing back animals that have appropriate place in nature such as animals that only recently went extinct.

As a palaeoartist and a long-time viewer of your channel, as well as a fellow educational content creator, please never use AI in a thumbnail again. The entire software is based on plagiarism and completely fails to accurately recreate any of the extinct animals it's supposed to while robbing opportunities from actual artists. Seeing this thumbnail honestly felt like a punch in the gut.

When people talks about to bring animals back often they don't enough about the technology. The idea is to take sperm(create it) and put it in a similar animal (female ofc.). You will never get the exact animal back. Anyone who says that, has not understood the idea.
I cringe every time someone talks about bringing mammoths back. The idea here is to use an elephant as a host. You will not get an mammoth from that
