Hey Shrimp Keepers, hope you're making it a great week! Today, I wanted to talk about Matten Filters and filters in general for a shrimp tank. This video is about my experience over the years in filtration for my many shrimp tanks. Lately, I've notice a huge change in the shrimp room and that has to do with switching over to these filters. The video talks about the best filtration for a shrimp tank, how to cycle a shrimp tank and how to keep a shrimp tank cycles.
Best Filtration:
1.) Matten Filter (HMF)
Between the flow and surface area, this filters is easily number one.
2.) API Sponge Filters
With the lack of surface area and added labor to clean the sponge, this filter is still a solid choice.
3.) Canister Filter with Sponge on Intake
Canister filters are always a great choice if you are looking for a cleaner look to the tank.
How to Cycle a Shrimp Tank
1.) I call it the clean sponge. Simple take a cycled sponge filter and squeeze it out over the new tank. All the dark dirty water that flows out of it is full of good bacteria. This is a great way to instantly cycle the tank.
2.) Seeding: Place a sponge filter or any other type of filter in or on an already set up tank. After a month, the filter will be ready to go. You can place with filter directly into or on a new tank. The tank will be ready for shrimp or fish.
3.) Add fish or plecos to a newly set up shrimp tank. After two month with the filter running and fish in the tank, it is ready for use. Do a 90% water change and the tank will be completely ready.
How to Keep A tank Cycled
The bioload in an aquarium is so important, especially in a freshwater shrimp tank. Shrimp are sensitive and produce little waste. Therefore, you don't want the water to foul. Once a tank is cycled, the bacteria thriving in the filter need ammonia to keep them alive. Since shrimp produce little waste, a hobbyists needs to make to have adequate numbers of shrimp to keep the bacteria in the filter alive. Usually this cannot be done and the tank will recycle thus killing the shrimp. To prevent this common problem, I use snail or other micro fish to substitute the bioload. These friendly inhabitants provide the ammonia necessary to keep the bacteria alive until the shrimp populate the tank.
I hope you enjoyed the video. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me here on RUclips or here:

Great video Lup,I will eventually decommission the canisters I have and use just sponge filters ...100% the best filtration for Shrimp.
Mark!!! Love your videos,Sir!!
Will canister filters with an intake valve like a sun sun kill baby shrimp? Please respond ASAP because I'm receiving several shrimps for a tank very soon
Kevin Ma Every type of motorized filter will kill shrimp if they geht into the rotor area. If you use one, make sure to wrap the intake with a sponge so that the suction on the surface is less and the shrimp cannot get into the filter
It would be good to see a Matten filter in a display tank. It's easy to see how great they work in a production setting, but most of us are in the hobby for aquascaping and display. I believe it can be done effectively, but it would be an inspiration for us. Cheers!
Yes they are the best and I am in the process of setting up 3 new tanks with HM filters. Excellent video!
Great video enjoying your vids every week.
HAHAHAHA The Rabbit Snails are so damn cool.
your popularity is soaring!
Hi Robert. Could you please do a shrimp saturday video about shrimp food. The problem is that you talk about shrimp food, but those brands are not in all countries. I thought you might be able to do a good in depth video of ingredients that you prefer/hate so that we can find something similar in our countries... Thank you in advance!
Every video you make has so much info in it dude. You may have just solved my issues. I've been having a nightmare in nitrites. Nothing I do is dropping them. So it has to be cycling because I only have about 8 royal blue tiger culls and some pond snails and a ramshorn in it. Just added some fish food this morning to make more bioload.
Any idea when you'll get more bloody mary's? Waiting on buying some tigers from you so I can get my bloodies at the same time.
Just spent 40$ on your sight thank you I needed filter help some one wanted me to spend 90$ thank u a lot
Great info. Thank you!
Question for you about the Matten filter there seems to be a lot of dead space on the suction side is there a reason you are taking away so much space from the tank, thanks
Im sure you provably have already changed your setups some. But behind the sponge wall you have room to put some free floating filter media or water conditioning. Moss/plants/carbon or add more surface area with even bio-balls.
how would you clean the filter without getting the sand on the other side?
helpful info sir! been searching solutions for my soon hatch giant freshwater shrimp. i tried only aerator but the food is clouding the water in just 3-4days(twice feeding daily). it would be so wrong to change the water when the larva are hatching soon n release from the mother. it would be a great loss!
How do you clean this filter while preventing baby shrimp from going to the other side? How often you clean it?
i like ur videos
Can I use tap water with water conditioner? For the shrimp tank cos I am new to shrimps and I want the best for them.
I have used a hang on back filter but I always end up with about 8 to ten shrimp after awhile they reproduce good for the first bit then back down to ten I just bought a whole bunch of blue velvets and they all died! At 10 bucks a pop I am pissed! I had a great amount of orange neo cardinia my beta ate them all then I got red cherrys they were doing good I cleaned the filter now they have dropped population huge so I am wondering maybe too much flow is doing this to my shrimp, tank is planted I always have plants in my tanks. I Just want my shrimp to explode like they do in everyone elses tanks. That mat filter is new to me I would like to try it.
hey man, good stuff, what's your opinion on running undergravel filter in combination with sponge ?
what about filling that space with Java moss?
i had the best shimp tank just with a sand internal filter and all the tank was filled with Ceratophyllum
What density of the mattenfilter is the best for Shrimps??
I've been trying to find some blonde tigers for some time now with no luck. Happen to know when you will have some in stock? Looking for a 20+ order.
Could I link a tank of shrimp with a tank housing a pair of breeding Angels? If so, can I run both tanks under optimal water perimeters for shrimp and not worry about the angels?
Where can I find those sponge mats?
Amazon
Hi can I ask please what's the tds in the rabbit snail tank with the shrimp are they ok in lo tds
Thanks for any advice on this
Can river shrimp breed in aquarium a?
are there matten filters that would fit standard 1.5, 5, and 15 gallon tanks?
Sos my tank just had a ph of 6.4 and now it is 8.8 what do I do to lower because I have drift wood and cholla wood
Hi what's the minimum amount of time required to have a tank decently cycled? Since my neo caridinas boomed to well over a thousand I reckon they really need a new aquarium fast because it's getting very messy, so I have new one running for like a week.
Also, in the new tank I'm using 'ADA amazonia soil' and 'exo terra riverbed sand' is this ok?
it helped me a lot,,,,,hahhaha.thank you
Where do you get that black sponge you're using
you can get it from my site: www.flipaquatics.com
