  • I just got the Bridge City Tool Works Chopstick Master 2.0. In this video I unbox it, demo it, and compare it to the original Chopstick Master.
    This was not sponsored. I bought this gizmo with my own pennies.

    Aloha, so I just ordered the Gen1 for less cost than the Gen2 and Gen1 will include both the Grn 2mm & Rd5mm arms where as the Gen2 only comes with the Rd5mm not the Grn2mm thus if you are looking to do both look at getting the Gen1 as you will save considerably in the purchase price

    Thanks for this video! I just received my version 1 chopstick master from BCTW and it’s a beautiful piece of workmanship.
    I recently was on an “official” Japanese chopstick maker’s site and noticed in their description that they use powder crushed lacquer to the tip of chopsticks to give the tip some gripping power. I wondered if this is something you’ve tried?
    Also, I am a little concerned about the chopsticks warping and bowing with humidity and being doused in water constantly. Is this a problem you come across? The “official” site says they “inject a consolidation agent” in the wood to “suppress curving” of the chopstick. I contacted them about this consolidating agent and asked what it was but they said it was proprietary and a trade secret so they did not tell me. I was wondering what your thoughts are as to what exactly could be used to prevent curving of the chopstick. I have used wood hardeners & some marine quality finishes on other projects and I’m sure they would work however I am quite certain they are not food safe - in fact some can be very toxic. Any thoughts?
    Sorry for the long, and I loved your video!

    • @BitsandWood
      @BitsandWood  Год назад +1

      I don't think so. Not out of the box anyway. You could probably chuck up the blank into a drill and spin the end against a sanding pad to round the ends over before planing it, but I've never tried that.

    When you raise the ramp what depth is the space at the tapered tip end? I know we end up with 5mm thickness at the tip, but the depth of the jig there wouldn't be 5mm since the plane blade also takes some of that space.

    Tough choice between the version 1 and version 2. Like the wider bench stop, like that with the saw/sled setup nothing needs to hang down below the bench like on the version 2....but, if the saw dulls the tops will get ragged and that saw is expensive to replace. With everything done by the plane on version 2 it is an easy matter to just touch up the edge again and have clean cuts. Also think being able to skew the plane could be helpful with some woods. Attracted more to version 1 but logically version 2 maybe be a better design over the long run. If you had neither one which would you buy.

    • @BitsandWood
      @BitsandWood  4 года назад

      Anthony Miller If I was starting fresh, I would get the V2. Cheaper and doesn’t need the saw blade.

    • @anthonymiller8979
      @anthonymiller8979 4 года назад +1

      @@BitsandWood Thanks. The V1 is $20 more now but does give you both arms which is normally a $50 addition but I think the plane will give a smoother finial than the saw and skewing the plane can be a plus for tricky woods. (I love curly maple). BTW, your videos are really well done in the way you present info. Subscribed now.

    Great video. You helped me decide to purchase gen 2. I got the green arm and can't seem to get the point down to 2mm, closer to 4.3mm actually. Have you been able to get it down to 2mm? Seems like the arm does not lift the wood high enough in setting 3.
    After the purchase, I started looking for more info about the tool, but I don't see much being said about it...except that the quality has decreased since BC was sold in 2018. Hopefully, It's a small adjustment that I'm overlooking to get down to 2mm.

      It really depends what the customer is after. If it's just simple cherry, I usually ask $12 with a fabric case. Walnut I do a couple dollars more. I've done some with padauk and red heart that I think I went around $25 because the lumber was so much more expensive. I did do one commission where they were walnut with silver metal leaf applied at the top 1-1/2" and I made a small walnut box with a sliding top to hold them in. I charged $75 for that. I probably should have charged a little more for the amount of labor it took.

    • @99trampis
      @99trampis 5 лет назад +1

      Also good to note is that since V2 doesn't include the green adapter you'll have to spend $50 more to have it where V1 includes both the red and green.

    • @BitsandWood
      @BitsandWood  5 лет назад +1

      I should probably do a side-by-side comparison one of these days. I like the heft of V1, but I like the swivel plate for the hand plane on the V2. I also like the extension for cutting the finial with the hand plane on the V2. I always worried with the V1 that I would slip and hit the saw blade. It's never happened, but it sure would hurt if it did.

    • @99trampis
      @99trampis 5 лет назад +1

      @@BitsandWood The only reason I would go with V1 (since they still offer it) is because it includes the green sled. That adds $50 to the V2 price. And I think I would tend to use the smaller size sled. Just my opinion though. Love your videos!
