    For the video, Doug. I still remember I try to memorize these 6 qualities of dhamma in my childhood. I was taught to use 6 qualities of dhamma as the yardstick for any dhamma. Any teachings which didn't fit these properties are to be abandoned.

    The spirit of enquiry is in line with Zen, which says: “Great Doubt, Great Awakening; small doubt, small awakening; no doubt, no awakening.”
    In early Buddhism, that is one of the four Iddhipada (the spiritual power of INVESTIGATION that possesses concentration due to desire and volition of striving.)

    One who sees the Dhamma sees me.
    One who sees me sees the Dhamma.
    O monks and wise men, just as a goldsmith would test his gold by burning, cutting and rubbing it, so must you examine my words and accept them, not merely out of reverence for me.
    My teaching is not a philosophy. It is the result of direct experience.
    My teaching is a means of practice, not something to hold onto or worship.
    My teaching is like a raft used to cross the river.
    Only a fool would carry the raft around after he had already reached the other shore of liberation.

    First of all very nice Vedio. we should take care of teachings which are said by Buddha carefully. Dr. Ambedkar book Buddha and his Dhamma he give same points to which we can differentiate about Buddha teaching and teaching in the name of Buddha.

    Another informative video. Even if the Buddha never said a word about free inquiry, many people (myself included) would still weigh and consider what was said, trying to measure it with reason and with experience. If there was an inconsistency with either reasoned considerations or with life experience, then skepticism would be warranted.

    The spirit of enquiry in the beginning and in the end knowing and faith. Just knowing can be part of enquiry and part of difference with established required faith and ritual.

    I do not know to what degree morning chant is "standardized" or if this varies from monastery to monastery.
    That said, I know in the chanting book from Amaravati Buddhist Monastery, which appears to be used in the English Language Ajahn Chah branch monasteries, has this phrase as a part of the morning chant.

    You said that the dhamma is apparent or almost self evident(I can't remember your exact wording, but much to that effect), but then also say it isn't for everyone and it's only apparent or accessible to "sensible" people. Isn't this a contradiction to some extent? Perhaps not a strict logical contradiction but definitely contradictory in spirit, so to speak. Because something that is apparent and evident, at least to me, would imply no need for "special training" or "special wisdom" to gain access to.
    Am I misinterpreting what you are getting at?

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  2 года назад

      Yes I don't deny there is some contradiction in spirit here, otherwise everyone would be Buddhist! 😄

    • @nickscurvy8635

      There's nothing wrong with contradiction sometimes. hell, many seemingly contradictory truths sometimes end up being true at the same time.

      To be fair, the Buddha has said this too.
      At 3:51 the Buddha is quoted saying that the teaching is “visible in this very life, immediately effective.”
      On the other hand, in the famous ayacana sutta , the Buddha says “This Dhamma that I have attained is deep, hard to see, hard to realize..beyond the scope of conjecture, subtle…”
      By analogy, the scientific process says that anybody with the proper chemicals and tools can reproduce your findings, but “anybody” doesn’t go out and buy chemicals & tools. It still takes training & persistence to understand formal science, even though science is “reproducible by anybody” technically. Same with dhamma: if you’re a reasonable person willing to practice and follow the guidance of a genuine teacher, then you’ll get results. But in reality, 99% of people just read without any direct practices & they avoid teachers right at the point when the training is challenging enough to bring real results and change.
      It’s just the nature of science and dhamma: the process is technically open to all, but in reality not all people will ever apply themselves enough to directly come into contact with “the real thing”.

    the problem with inquiry is that it is of course tainted by greed, hate and delusion. so that's why relying on someone who has made progress on the path is critical. most people suck at inquiry.

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  2 года назад

      Sure, the problem is that since we are tainted by greed, hate, and delusion it's hard for us to be sure about who has really made progress along the path and who merely seems to have done. So inquiry is inescapable for us.

    Buddhism is about direct experience.. This person must be a Buddhist scholar who probably have never sat on a cushion and meditated. Buddhism about practicing the Dhamma not going into pointless analysis..
