We, the US military, has issues with cell phones as well. Recently a Navy Chief was brought up on charges she had covertly setup a Starlink terminal aboard her ship. It was installed up in the mast in a not often used area in order not to be found. Fortunately a civil mod team found it and said WTF!. It gets worse. The Chiefs Mess chipped in to pay the terminal data costs AND she tried to lie about it. Her and the entire Chiefs Mess should have been Courts Martialed. Finally I’ll see colleagues throw their cell or tablet in their helmet bag before going flying. I have always left that stuff on the deck in my locker before flying. Just having the phone on results in radio emissions that can be pretty easily triangulated and identified to at least the IMEI identifier of the individual phone. Regardless of whether the ‘app’ or whatever communications protocol is being used is encrypted or not. Supermarkets use such technology to trace their customers path through the aisles and build a picture of how people navigate the supermarket. Taking these devices into a battlefield seems like an almost guaranteed introduction to the land of the non-living.
As a rail worker, I can confirm that getting on your smart phone IS the modern equivalent of having a smoke. The ratio's the other way for us; most of the time we're very brain-active / switched on; when you get a brrak you don't know what to do with yourself.
Cell phone usage is officially part of the Ukraine military communication. It's on both sides. Ukrainians are a bit smarter with it. They are using VPN on top of an encrypted communication app that most people already use. They use wifi from starlink and wifi from residential and while at work their phones are on airplane mode, location off.
I saw a video of an American ex Army guy who went over to Ukraine. He got very close to the front with a drone crew. And you're absolutely right, the Ukrainians made him put his phone on airplane mode. They showed him a tree with 3 phones nailed to it, from people who didn't put their phone on airplane mode. If they find a phone that's on they take it and nail it up.
@@comfortablynumb9342 I wasn't going to give the app but I guess it's no secret now. People are using the name in their videos. I was there month 2 of the invasion.
Great episode Wes - lots of good information in this one! And I'm glad you've given up those smokes! Now THAT is a Smooth Segue to the Sponsor Spot!!! Smooth as silk!!
There was a Star Trek episode where the "Gorn" locked on to Kirk's communicator to pinpoint his location and direct mortar fire to it. But that was just science fiction, right? On the other hand, a US Marine called in a fire mission via cell phone in Grenada.
If it sends a radio signal you can triangulate on most radio frequencies. German U-boats where hunted down after they surfaced to signal home. US Signal Corps started by running telegraph lines in the US Civil War. Telegraph lines are a good way to avoid broadcasting radio signals, if a bit cumbersome to use.
Thanks, as always Wes! Your comment about how soldiers conceal their cigarette reminded me of a scene from British comedy 'It ain't arf hot Mum' set in India in WW2, where one sharp eyed individual identifies two fake officers by noticing that they have nicotine stains on their palms, instead of their fingers, commenting that only the non-commissioned ranks smoke that way, while staff officers hold a cigarette between their fingers. I have no idea why I chose to share that memory but, hey! Boosting the algorithm and all that! Slava Ukrayini 🇺🇦✌️✌️✌️🇺🇦

"GPS can track the phone's location .. even if the device is not connected to a network": The device can track its own location but as GPS receivers are passive devices, nobody else can. To locate the device from outside via GPS requires the phone to actively communicate its own location determined by GPS through a network connection. A phone with an active GPS receiver but no other communication channel activated can NOT be tracked.
As a 72 yr old I had laugh at the part about party lines . Understandably , people don't know how things were back in the day and I can't believe that's ancient history . Anyway , aren't cell towers being targeted in war zones ?
Hi Wes. I like your videos and assessments. I am retired RAAF (36 Years service). Do you have an opinion or knowledge of why the UN has not intervened in this illegal invasion of Ukraine by Russia
can somebody please explain to me, how the NSA is able to track your phone just via GPS. because in my understanding your phone is just receiving the GPS signals and and not transmiting anything to the satellites. or did i missunderstand this statement?
Don’t be naive. The Russians have very compelling reasons to believe that personal phones are the most secure means of battlefield communication. No use trying to convince them otherwise.
i would love to know if we(the us) are using manned ISR assets a satellite is good but a sensor 100's of miles closer on a stealthy/persistent or manned high speed ISR aircraft. also i would love to see a photo quality print of SAR images of russias borders and active battle fields
i know a guy who was on tankers and they weren't tanking up anything ive ever seen online and using JP-7. ive always said the F-23 went black as a stealth ISR/BDA/lasing platform with upgraded engines, i mean look at the 117 and its 'partner' that is still secret that did alot of the lasing other than a few SF teams
If the Russians can triangulate artillery positions with phones I would assume that the Ukrainians can do the same thing to Russian positions. It seems like being on an artillery crew is a short term job there because they are being hunted all the time.
Australia lacks the self promotion skills of places like America. I have shares in EOS defence, who have supplied Laser counter drone systems to Ukraine. Who knew? I did because EOS told me. And that is the only reason.

The Taliban were using mobile phones to track NATO soldiers in Afghanistan.
Its shocking that Russia did not expect a state to do the same.
