  • Hello!
This week I felt like talking about Intangible World Heritage in Portugal, after having mentioned the beautiful Caretos de Podence (AKA Entrudo Chocalheiro, classified by UNESCO in 2019) on last week's video about Carnaval in Portugal!
Chocalhos were classified by UNESCO as an Intangible Heritage in 2015, and there are only 13 manufacturers of these type of bells in Portugal. This is an art with over 2000 years and that can be found in the Region of Alentejo, south of Portugal. The most well-known village producing this kind of art is called Alcáçovas, but you can also find some of the production in villages located in the area of Estremoz and Reguengos de Monsaraz.
In Alcáçovas there's also the Museum of Chocalho, where you can find a private collection of 3000 pieces gathered for over 60 years. Learn more about it and the production of these typical cowbells by watching Luís Godinho's video ( • GPS - ARTE CHOCALHEIRA... .
I am also leaving contacts of one of the manufacturers, so that you can buy one of these singular pieces and contribute to preserving this very important craft (PLEASE DO NOT use it on animals!* Use it as a doorbell, as a decoration item, for music... there are many ways to preserve this tradition without the need of hurting those poor creatures):

Let me know if you want to learn more about Intangible Heritage in Portugal! Because I am willing to share my knowledge on that with you, in future videos!
    All the best,

    * There was a study conducted by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology which came to the conclusion that bells can lead to ear infections and deafness in animals, whose hearing is more sensitive than that of human beings. The bells can create noise levels of up to 113 decibels, about the amount of noise made by a chain saw and louder than the legal noise limit of 85 decibels. The researchers also reported that animals wearing bells tended to chew for less time than without using the bells, which means that this affects their eating and digestion habits. They didn't come to conclusions on how the weight of the bells affect their life, but Animal Protection Associations from all over the world suspect that it may contribute for a change of behavior.
