Thanks, Eric!🌷Papyrus is one of my favourite non-fiction reads of 2023. The Dutch translation was chosen some time last year as book of the month by my local bookshop and that brought it to my attention. A must read for book lovers!🥰📚

I adored Fayne! I completely agree with you - I don't understand why she hasn't had more recognition for her work!

Thank you for talking about "Fayne"!! I just got it today and plan to read it soon. Ann Marie McDonald is one of Canada's most celebrated authors, and I'm Canadian so its nice to see her name mentioned on "BookTube". Awesome.

Currently reading Fayne, and I am obsessed! When I'm not reading it, I'm thinking about it. Ann-Marie MacDonald's other novel "Fall on Your Knees" is one of my all time favourites.

I think Papyrus was an interesting book with a great premise. However, I also think that the author fell short of what she was trying to accomplish. It seemed to me that the book jumped too much and was at times repetitive. It felt that the author lost her objectivity in the book. I kept asking, if it was an academic book, or an history of books, or a personal memory. The lines are so blurred. it is a book that I probably would not recommend without a long explanation. It needed a could editor.

Hi Eric, I was introduced to you today by Sarah from Hardcover Hearts. As curious as I am, I looked you up and I truly enjoyed your Channel and your description of the books that No One Is Talking About. Of all on the list, I think I want to read Papyrus, by Irene Vallejo. I am currently reading Marcel Proust, In Search of Lost Time, and Persuasion. I am also journaling my reading as I read the pages. Your description is compelling, so I will subscribe and follow you along the way. Happy New Year! Yolanda

Hi Yolanda, nice to meet you. Sarah is the best! I hope you get a chance to read Papyrus at some point. I’ve never fully tackled Proust’s volumes. I should do that one day! Happy New Year to you!

Ann-Marie MacDonald is one of my all time faves. Fayne was excellent and agree she needs more attention, but this happens to many Canadian authors. They often don’t get the same reach and recognition as others.
Really liked how you talked about Love Leda. Might have to pick that up. 😊💙

Yeah, I don’t know why as many make it in the UK as they should. Hope you get a chance to try Love Leda.

Definitely want to read "Love Leda." I think there are still too few novels that explore the lives of gay working class people.

Thank you for this. I haven't read any of these so glad to get the recommendations. A book I loved that was not exactly under the radar but didn't get recognition I feel it deserves is For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy On My Little Pain by Victoria Mackenzie.

Hey Eric: Happy Holiday. It would be nice to be able to contribute more on the theme of less talked about new fiction but there are a few books I'll mention because this channel has been instrumental in helping me find them. There is The Birthday Party, an international Booker winner (which I read in the original anyway); Nobelist Annie Erneau's Perdre, and of course the smash hit, Damon Copperhead. So thanks very much, it's been a good year for reading.

Here's something strange: I went to add Night Journey to my want-to-read list on Goodreads and saw it has no ratings at all. (?!) Also added Papyrus. I've got Fayne and can't wait to read it!

I enjoyed the audio book of Papyrus. Loved the content and it was well narrated. I've seen no mention of Anything You Can Imagine: Peter Jackson and the Making of Middle Earth. By Ian Nathan. Tristram Wymark does and amazing job at the narration. Highly recommend to any LOTR movie fans.

I’ve read 29 Memorial and agree with you. Want to read the rest of the books on your list. I want to add The new life by Tom Crewe. I loved this book so much & felt it was overlooked during the year.

Fayne seems to have been published only in Canada. No kindle option in US. I got my pb copy from Blackwell's for a better price than in US. HB in US is $53.60 😳
