I love acryl gouache. I use it with watercolor to create a "locked" layer for example the character and then can still use watercolor effects in background etc. Also, you're free to use it however it works for you, but I recommend you putting more water and it'll dry much more slowly and you'll have an easier time cleaning palettes. It can be thinned out to a large extent almost like watercolor so you can start lighter if you wish and build up the permanent deep layer
From what I've researched, these are not exactly the same as just a matte acrylic. They have more PIGMENT in them than regular acrylic, therefore, more color and opacity. Turner actually combines gouache with acrylic in these. It's not just acrylic.
I think there's a misnomer about acryl gouache in that its exactly the same as matte acrylic. They both use an acrylic medium, but acryl gouache should still give the results of a gouache because the pigment is still less finely ground. The resulting acryl gouache should still give the same results of a normal gouache, a full flat coverage with no streakyness. Matte acrylic can have texture and potentially still be streaky as well as of course being matte instead of glossy.
To say what's right or wrong, is a pretty bold claim lol 😆... But since we are on that subject, I could say you are completely using them wrong as well. Get yourself a decent " stay wet palette " or " wet palette " I have the " army painters wet palette " and 2 of the " Everlast stay wet palette " they are the more exspensive ones on the market.... but they are worth it because the are a plastic hardshell type, with an elastic band that keeps it tightly shut and secure. They are go for one the go and plein air painting with gouache and acrylic gouache. Honestly, they are a total game changer and I don't know how I ever used gouache without them! there are many other cheaper ones and options on Amazon for around 15-20$. The Masterson stay wet palette brand has a whole bunch of different types of them.... and they have very good reviews. They aren't for travel and made to keep at home tho. They are made of thinner plastic and aren't travel friendly... but they work great. No more wasted paint, no more dried out paint, no more wasting money and no more spraying and diluting your paints every 5 minutes. I add a few drops of clove oil in mine.... and a few pennies under the sponge, to stop any mold. Anyway, I hope you look into it and you have a great day 😀
I've noticed a lot of confusion about this topic too. Liquitex just came out with their "acrylic gouache" line, and I wish in subtitles under the name it just said "matte acrylic" so people understand these are the same as any acrylic paint but they dry matte, not glossy.
@@Foervraengd They also charge a lot more for them than for regular acrylic paints. I hate acrylic and I love gouache so I won't even be tempted to try them. Thanks for pointing out that it is just a matte acrylic paint. I think the term acrylic gouache is so misleading.
Great painting and great advice. I've seen these paints at the store and I'm glad I didn't mistake them for gouache since I already have a bunch of matte acrylic paints but needed some extra colors of gouache.
I'm so happy I found this video! I am not into gouache at all. I'm a watercolorist and I came in search of reviews for the various gouache varieties my local paint store has in stock b/c I wanted to get gouache to highlight on some of my work. Before watching your video I didn't realize the acryl gouache options were acrylics in disguise; I appreciate your video, it saved me from some serious headaches!
Ok so your "saltbox" rant just answered every question I had brewing in my head and couldn't articulate properly. Mystery solved. Why did no one tell me this before about Turner Acrylic Gouache? Here I am in art school with my handsomely paid professor, doing my own research about gouache thinking that is the material I am using. I thought aside from some slight inability to reanimate (which I liked for glazing, layering and slight water resistance upon completion (compared to legit gouache) they were the same. Because I never used this or actual gouache before, I assumed they behaved the same way but I couldn't achieve the gouache techniques due to inexperience. This video inspires me to find a proper gouache set to work with. I want to feel the difference for myself. Many thanks! :)

It is weird - the hint is in the title - Acryla or Acrylic! I dont understand why people dont read labels! I guess this was a much needed video judging by the comments.
I assumed "acryla" was just a product line when I bought these thinking the were norma gouache... I read the label. Acryla is not the same word as acrylic even if they sound similar, so there's no reason for an average person to assume a similar word has the same meaning. When I see "holbein" I don't assume it has somthing to do with holstein cows...

No, and she's not really using it the way most of us do. You can thin it out with water and layer it endlessly and it remains workable for a short time. Turner only remains workable for a few minutes but the acryla brand maybe a half-hour. Just keep in mind your humidity makes a big difference. I live in NYC and here it's workable but I went to a retreat in Arizona where it was hot and dry and cut the working time in half

Yes, all brands of "acrylic gouache" are just "matte acrylic" it's a marketing name to let people who are looking for gouache, because it is matte, to find a similar appearing product.
@@KimberlyCrick I think the Japanese brands are different to just matte acrylics. They really look like gouache in the end. Liquitex Acrylic Gouache looks and feels more like matte acrylic paint.
“ You’ve been using acrylic gouache wrong this whole time- *because you treat them as gouache, not acrylics.* “ Very true. I see so many people who do that. Like painting swatches that is half opaque, half watered down. You do not water down acrylic. If you want them “watery”, you add acrylic matte medium not water. If not, they may cause disadhesion (flaking, cracking) in the future.
