    Finally the recognition Kolkata metro deserves. Now it needs guiness record for slowest construction. 13years of my school and college life was hell because of 6km useless section of line 3. Road was blocked and destroyed for its construction from my class 9, Now I'm working professional for 6years.

      40% Indian kids are growth stunned (as of 2021 as per Govt of India statistics) due to lack of nutrition as there parents are so poor that they can't afford quality food.
      So does it look like romanticism ? No, rather it's called realism.
      So of-course you can pretend that they don't exist, but that will simply means that are living in a fools paradise. Any progress that does not take account of that massive inequality and poverty among Indians is not a progress, rather a manipulation, oppression & moral corruption of that very society you are living.
      Bengal and its society is pragmatic, socialist & humanist and thereby they don't hide anything like poverty which is real and rather they try to solve that with equal participation and creating opportunity for everyone in the society. And in that aspect West Bengal is much advanced than any other section of Indian society and its common people are much more rich than any other parts of India in real terms and having real opportunity and access of resources in life.

      @@Nightcrawler81 there is a full story behind how Indian railways now owns 100% of it. Mamata played dirty politics wherever possible. I can vouch, had the change of power not happened in WB in 2011, this metro line would have been fully completed as per its originally decided alignment and operational by 2017-18. ( original completion target was 2014 ).

    Currently, West Bengal has the highest number of beggars in the country by a significant margin, and this number continues to rise because Didi (the Chief Minister) consistently declines manufacturing offers made by private companies. Bengal even has ports that it can use to effectively challenge Maharashtra, but it requires someone with enough intelligence to utilize them.

    When I was in 1st year in college then the Metro station in near Ruby Hospital was supposed to be built. I completed 4 years of college, been working for more than 8 years, that station is still under construction!

    The delay in construction of the first metro line in Calcutta was due to the soft soil of the area and old technology used. In fifties, the Russian engineer's study said that constructing underground tunnels are not possible due to the type of soil of the Calcutta area. In 1972, the first phase of metro was constructed by excavating and not by tunneling machines. With old buildings on both sides of the streets was a challenge task.

    Mumbai is the only city in India to have its Metro lines made entirely by the city development authority with minimal government interference. Kudos to MMRDA for this.

It was the Railway Ministry who took 8 years for the approval of material modification of Joka Metro and the Ministry of Defense is now not allowing metro construction at Mominpur and Esplanade. But yes state government is also responsible, Barrackpore Metro is still stuck bcoz of a pipeline, the Duttabad encroachment took 5 yrs to clear. Wellington Square Metro had to be canceled bcoz the state couldn't vacate enough land and it took 8yrs for the land acquisition of Joka Metro. But must also not forget she was the one who sanction 4 new Metro lines plus 3 extension of Line 1 & 2 fully funded by the centre(INC gov). But she doesn't want to invest a penny. Santragachi, Dankuni extension, Baruipur Metro, Barrackpore to Barasat Metro, Shalimar/Budge Budge to Ruby Metro is all stuck bcoz of the state gov refusal to pay a single penny.     Has to do with excessively large amount of polical chaos happening. The funding is not done properly so the projects lay idle for months/years at length. The construction speed is not the issue. The issue is this idle time. If you come to Kolkata most of the time, there is no work being done on the viaducts of the metro. It sometimes feels like an abondaned project and again when work is happening it seems like it will open soon and again there is no work done for the next few months. Hence this excessive delay.
    The line 3 (Purle lines) - The viaducts were there when I was 9years old back in 2009. That line was opened in 2022 Dec. I mean if the viaducts are already placed I can assume 40-50% if not more work is already done. Still it took over one-and-a-half decade. There was no construction happening for almost a decade.

    Good video. The main problems correctly highlighted are:
    - Lack of expertise.
    - Calcutta in on marshland.
    - Land encroachment.
    I have to disagree with Mr. Shreedharan's assessment:
    - Mr. Shreedharan did not build anything. He assembled off-the self components. Everything in Calcutta Metro was Made in India, long before "Make in India" became a political slogan.
    - Most of the revenue spent in building Calcutta Metro was recycled back into the Indian Economy, such as ICF Chennai and BEML. Mr. Shreedharan relied on imports.

    Let me share a story, in my locality a 100-meter overbridge was to be made. That overbridge took more than 10 years, when it started, I was in class 5. We were excited with the hope that we will one day use that bridge to go to school. By the time that bridge got inaugurated, I was in college 1st year. That is the pace of construction in Bengal.

    The main problem of kolkata is the PEOPLE. As a bengali I feel ashamed of myself, people are so selfish here that they dont want any development where they have to sacrifice something. No one will leave an inch of land for these projects. But when it comes to encroachments, railway land is their so called free home. You cant even shift them to other places as they are backed by stupid illiterate politicians. This state has no future, whereas other states are constantly developing even from the ruins.

      Buddy this problem is everywhere. This being selfish and all. And yes land encroachment is definitely a bid problem in WB. Not being a Bengali (a Maharashtrian living in BangaIore) can assure you that there is nothing to be ashamed of being a Bengali. Recently Chandrayaan 3 projects had more than 50 scientists who were Bengali. One of them is my childhood friend's relative. They are doing great in their respective domains. Political instability of a state is totally something else.
      And previously Bengalis were only known for being Doctors, Engineers, Scientists, Artists, Economists, Philosophers etc. The extremely poor ones doing menial jobs too (no offence, every state has labour population). But nowadays they have started being good entrepreneurs, many of the founders and CEO's of innovative upcoming startups and unicorn startups are Bengali. Even I work in one such unicorn founded by a Bengali. And even they are the CEO's and heads of various Indian Tech companies as well as the heads of Indian regional part of various International Tech giants.
      My point in saying all this is you can point out the wrongdoings of a state. But call yourselves as being ashamed and all just to look cool in front of society (destructive criticism) is very harmful. Some Bengalis gain pleasure from doing this which is wrong.
      I am glad that being a Marathi, we don't do these stuffs.

    Great video. Some points that you missed.
    Kolkata metro is the second busiest metro in India after Delhi.
    2400 people travel per kolkata metro train compared to 1100 in delhi.
    I see so many cities now getting metros that are unnecessary. It is important to consider routes etc before construction.
    Metro has become a fad. It is not the only public transportation option. Metro might not be the answer for each and every traffic problem.

    Kolkata metro is worst than local trans. Very crowded and they have build lines new operating lines in the outskirts of the city instead of in the city just to connect a temple. Now it hella crowded for people boarding from the city as it's straight one line metro so people have no other option.
    Newtown metro is a museum of it's own for 15 years still now operating

    Kolkata Metro is oldest and most popular mode of transport in Kolkata. I think it's lack of political will and poor project management which plaguing Kolkata Metro. Also Kolkata Metro being a government body controlled by Indian railways compared to DMRC which is autonomous leads to slow decision making.

      Whatever it is, I think it's high time the people of Bengal realise and change. The oldest metro should have been the best, but it's the opposite. I myself am a resident of Joka, the metro line is ready but it's still not running and is just a show business. Only a single train runs up and down that too from morning 8AM to 4:40PM in the evening with a whopping interval of 30Mins.

But still it is in proposals only infact the government were degraded and proposed as light metro project instead of normal metro..!

    I moved to Kolkata some months ago and I have noticed that metro here is not very necessary like other cities,there are a lot of other public transportation options like bus,local trains and trams.I have not noticed huge traffic jams here like I noticed in Delhi.

    Joka Taratala line is nothing but a “Toy Train” as the locals call it here. This metro is highly disconnected with the other parts of the metro circuit. Talking of inefficiencies of this part I would invite you to the stretch which is under construction from Taratala towards Moulali. I have seen support rails and decimated at least 2 times. This is going out from the citizens pocket. Leave aside the beurocratic issues for laying lines near Mint, Army Cantonments. We love our city and the metro but hate the reasons of delay. One day when my grandchildren’s may see this whole metro working I believe.😢😢 Earlier trams used to run in this areas, now with metro constructions even the roads have gone more narrow.
