- This is my interpretation on how to upcycle a broken spade bit, turning it into a palm carving gouge.
Disclaimer: I'm not a metal or woodworker expert, just an amateur experimenting and sharing my work. I hope this helps you into your knowledge process in this matter.
If you're interested in get the handcarved spoon I'm going to giveaway, check the details at the end of the video. Results will be posted the 6th of April on my Instagram page.

upCycle... now there's a word dying to become an everyday descriptor for taking something broken and making it into something more than it was before. Also great work btw. Gotta love busted to beautiful
Thank you!
Thanks for the explanations throughout the video. I don't necessarily need them but I know there are a lot of people out there that are still new to working metal. I love videos of repurposing items! Giving new life to a broken or forgotten item is what I do with knives and tool restorations. You have given me another idea for when my bits break. Keep it up!
Thank you mate. I'm also a big fan of upcycling tools and materials from my home/workshop. Regards!
@@WoodworkingBarcelona If you're on Facebook please check out my page "Triune Blades". I make knives, do tool restorations, and am beginning to get into wood working. :)
Thats nice! I'll check it. By the way, nice forge!
I like how you give detailed instructions on tempering, hardening and annealing the drill bit.
+From this to that Thank you! I appreciate it.
A creative and extremely useful idea! Even the handle matches your roughing gouge. Well done!
Thanks man!
I appreciate u having the definitions of the different techniques that u were utilizing. Learned something new from that
+Timothy Fraire Thanks to notice that. Many people work on metal and they neglect that precious info from their videos which is quite bad because that info is the key to achieve good results. Regards!
Nice. I like that you added descriptions.
Very glad I found this post because I've decided to make some bowls and spoons this summer and have no gouges! I do however, have lots of metals, old tools and a forge and anvil! I should be able to make a few gouges for various sizes of bowls and spoons. THANKS!
That's great Kim. I'm glad this encouraged you to make your own tools. Please let me know how they turn out tagging me on Instagram. Good luck!
Stunning! Love watching your videos to see your skills and creativity!
+JamieHince I'm glad you do. Thanks!
Отличный и поучительный ролик. Успехов в творчестве и работе!
Awesome project, the gouge came out a beauty!

me encanta Lluis, te ha quedado una gubia de lujo!
+Paoson WoodWorking Muchas gracias Suso. Me alegro que te guste. Un abrazo!!
Nice! Always great when you can salvage something instead of tossing it.
+Kaged Creations Upcycling is the way, no doubt. Besides, this way you can get the specific tool you really need.
Great idea! Better to have things that are made to fit our needs, by our own hands, than some cheaply made stuff that is barely tolerable.
+ken beattie quite agree!
Great video which helped me a lot AND, I've never said this before, I loved the music!
Thank you mate!
Interesting handle design, definitely seems like it would feel comfortable for a long time.
+Josiah Yes it does feel comfortable, but next time I will make it a little bigger.
Nice Work! Just added it to my list of to-do's
+Brian Ernste Nice! Just be aware you're working with Carbon Steel, not HSS. Regards!
great build, and i got so many dead spade bits , tks for sharing
Thank you! Give it a try! I'll be surprised.
i thinking i will for next x mass,,, as i have two friends that every x mass i make us each a home made tool for the last 3 yrs, now,, from large mallets ,small tapping mallets, for chisel work , and this year it a awl with curly maple handle and old Allen keys, , they come out amazing,, and the allen key steel holds a point very well , ps, look for the longer type allen key, , 1-2$ at a yard sale for a set ,lol 4-6" + in length and cut off the L portion and insert in your handle , i chose the black hardened allen;s and not the chromed ones for look , ,,, been wanting a spoon carving gouge for years now,, and your idea fits that build tks ,
May I suggest that you only hit the high carbon steel when its cherry red. Hitting and forming it when black or grey will form cracks in the steel, ruining the chisel.
+spud pud Thanks for you advice.
Nicely done. I'm adding this to my project list
+Dustin Rogers I will be pleased to see the results. Regards!
love that you made something new
+GratfuledeadGurl Thanks¡
COOL IDEA THANKS FOR SHARING. I MIGHT TRY IT
Great looking tool and great looking spoon, too
+Matthew Cain Thanks Matthew, I'm glad you like it!
Excellent idea!! Awesome execution!!
+Ron Brown Thanks Ron! I'm glad you like it!
I havn’t think about it. It is realy smart. I like to make some stuff and spoons. I haven’t so professional tools like you, but it’s still fun.
+Malvin Botnen you can do this without expensive tools. You just need a cheap dremel a torch, a hammer, a solid chunk of steel to use as a anvil and sandpaper to sharpen the gouge. You can do this.
good idea. looks like it works pretty good too.
+joe j Thanks! I just works well. I'm sure this is not the only homemade tool I'll make.
He's back!!! Nice one brother... keep it up!
+Giaco Whatever Oh yeah! I'm back. Thanks for come by and leave a comment Giaco! Regards!
great video. was very happy to see the heat treating! it is too often a neglected (or unknown?) process in the hobbyist world
+wingman358 Yes indeed, this is a very important info that quite few people show on their projects. I'm glad you found it interesting.

Nice job. Now i know what to do with all my broke spade bits. 😊
