I'm a natural dark brown, but when I started graying I went blonde. It cut down on how often I had to color. Last march I decided to go gray. I had my stylist tone my hair darker in sections allowing for the gray to come in and blend as naturally as it could. All color is out in the back and only a bit remains in the front due to my style. I know it's what I need to do, but I do struggle sometimes with wanting to color it again.
I tried!! But ultimately decided I wasn’t ready. Was I right? Am I wrong? Neither. I just decided I wasn’t ready but my hairdresser uses a toner on my hair that keeps it dark, but tones my gray hair golden. Looks like highlights.....it isn’t real heavy dark, and still looks a little grayish at the roots. This has been the right decision for me, right now. I turned 50 in January and will be ready to transition at some point in the future. Thanks so much for sharing your journey. It’s inspiring to see your transition and all the in between! You are beautiful!! Inside and out! 💖
I've always dreaded the day I would need to start coloring my hair, because I loved the variations in the colors. Up until my 50's, I had every shade of brown and red imaginable. It sometimes looked metallic. Now, it seems I've lost the variations. I've wondered if it might be time to color, since I no longer have those beautiful gold and copper tones. At this time, I'm still plucking the grays; but a lot less than I have in the past. I'm 57 years old and my silver is few and far between. My hair is probably the least of my worries, as for looking my age; and I probably should just let it grow. My skin is what causes me to look my age. I'd rather have grey hair than sagging skin.
I’ll be 2 yrs this July that I went cold turkey and stopped coloring. It took about 10 months to have all my color cut out. Since last May I’ve just been growing it out and it’s finally past my shoulders. Now just trying to keep it from yellowing. I also use Joico purple shampoo but I also use Redken Detox hair cleansing shampoo (at Ulta) and it also helps take out pollutants and brighten my hair to white/gray. I love my hair. Just wish I would have done it sooner. Thanks for all your info, videos and topics you do I have learned a lot or have taken your recommendations. 😊
I am 77 and have been gray since my fifties. I honestly think you mentioning not caring what other people think is your best statement. Being myself was, and still is, the best feeling. I get more compliments on my hair now than I ever did when I had it streaked, bleached and highlighted! Aging is beautiful to me.....embrace it!
Yes!! The bleaching & hi lights & low lites.... AAARRGGHH! 😣🙄 I’d been doing this for 40 years & thought I’d never stop & then... I got very sick & lost ALL my hair. I am SOOO grateful it’s all grown back & I joke that “ I don’t understand! It’s grown back grey! How weird!” Not weird.....I’m 64 for goodness sake. Embrace the grey! Be free! Everybody’s doing it! And we are all the more beautiful because of it! Thank you for this little talk. You & your lovely hair are so, so beautiful, what a delight! Hugs from Northern California 😊🌼🌸🌺
I gave up dying my hair about six years ago, around when I turned 30, I have had some reactions to it! 😅 Quite a few people have told me I'm too young to dye my hair white, more have just been like Whyyyy? Then when I tell them that's it's natural colour they are usually shocked and impressed 😅😂
@@ashtrix8413 I had a friend when I was in my 20s who had that black hair with the silver coming in early. I thought that was so cool at the time and have always envied dark-haired ladies with natural curl. I've got the mousy brown straight fine hair that was a pain in the you-know-what to deal with back in the day (I'm near 70 now and retired). I did the frosting AND perming for body and hated the expense, tried to grow mine long but would usually end up tying it back since I'm physically active and hated hair in my eyes or mouth, lol. My mom was a platinum blond from the early 50s and did her own for years. She and my sister thought I was nuts when they saw my grey coming in, and my elderly aunt even gave me a bad time. I laughed at them all and told them they weren't fooling anybody and did my own thing. I cut my own hair, keep it shorter, do some old school rollers nightly and do some teasing and spraying; I like some of the vintage 50s and early 60s styles. I actually get compliments and have saved $$ over the years. No regrets.
Real me ride or die with their wives journeys as well as their own. All these films push abandonment or cheaters because of hardship or change. Thank you for sharing your thoughts:)
Thanks for this video. I am 63 years old. Was colouring my hair since 40. Now I came to visit my daughter in Sydney. She advised me to stop colouring and I immediately stopped not only colouring but stopped using lipstick, makeup, nailpolish. What a relief. May be I have gone a bit extreme but I feel very relieved.
Yes it is more beautiful to be your self I am doing the same and not caking the makeup on and taking better care of my self omg I feel young at 63 all that other stuff is a ball and chain
@@phyillisowens6491 my hair was naturally light red with almost blond highlights. Now it is a platinum white. I used to be teased with my natural hair when young because of my olive skintone. Now people say what shade of color do you use to get that shade of white. I just say I don't bother at my age late 70's to color my hair and since I am allergy to makeup of any kind my face is natural. Never used it. Then they say you are kidding you hardly have a wrinkle and you look around 50. Then I just say my parents good genes.
My hairdresser encouraged me to go grey years ago and showed me how it would actually act as a natural highlight, give a lift to my face and surprisingly, make me look younger. He was right and I get so many compliments, especially from men, who tell me they appreciate that I'm authentic and they find that attractive. Who knew!?
I wish theres a good hairdresser here that knows how to style grey hair like mine im still in my 40s and have many grey hair in my front hair than the back so its uneven
Fifteen years ago I tried going grey. I still had more pepper than salt. So I went back to dyeing my hair. Last year, after finding your channel, I decided to stop coloring again. I now have the most beautiful, white pixie cut hair. And like you, I’m embracing the freedom.
At 14 months I cut the color out and went with a pixie, one of my favorite cuts. I feel like “myself” after so many years chained to coloring my hair. Even gray, the pixie makes me look younger.
I have been steadily going gray since I was 13 years old. I never colored my hair. When I was young others would think I had highlights. I am now 60 and have about 60% gray/40% dark brown hair. Like you I also have curly hair. I have been taking art classes with 20-year-olds for the last 4 years and I'm often asked "How did you get your hair to look like that?" I laugh and say "It grows that way." Be your natural self. Embrace the gray.
13yrd old, woe! Here I am at 16 I was dying it just so ppl would not think I was old. I finally stopped dying last month. And I'm so thinking about going back blonde again because, ppl I work with stares when they talk to me, which makes uncomfortable.
@@fullyinformed2241 We all need to do what make us feel good about ourselves. I have friends who are older than I am who have chosen to not go gray. They tell me "You are lucky. You have the kind of gray that looks right with your dark hair and your skin color. Mine just looks wrong." Maybe you feel that way, like your gray hair just doesn't look right. There is nothing wrong with feeling this way or with thinking that the gray makes you look older than you are. If you feel that way you can fix it. It has become the norm in our culture for women to dye their hair until they die. According to a survey done in 2008 by Clairol "75% of American women dye their hair. This same survey revealed that 88% of women feel that their hair has an effect on their confidence." So you are not alone. My mother dyed her hair until she died 10 years ago. I was convinced if she had lived longer I would eventually look older than she did. She hated her gray hair but I watched her struggle with it my whole life and I didn't want to feel that way. So I chose to accept the gray along with the dark hair. If you like how your hair looks colored, if it makes you feel confident and attractive, if you are willing to spend the time and money to keep it that way, then You do You. Do what makes you feel good. To me the thought of dying my hair every time half an inch of gray was showing did not make me feel good so I didn't do it no matter how many hair stylists insisted that "You really should color that gray away Honey." We all make our own choices. Choose what makes you feel best.
I’m 43 and noticed I was going grey from 16. I dyed my hair for many years. But this year big chop and growing my greys in. Every time I think I should colour it. My husband reminds me that I’m beautiful and gives me the strength to keep going. Go grey ladies. It’s freeing.
Not every husband is the same. Not sure really where my husband stands. Anyway. I am the same age as you and I have only dyed mine every six months or so. I wear a head covering now but still there is the at home thing.
@@reflectionsinthebible3579 yes not all husbands are like yours but mine doesnt care if i have grey hair but he looks more younger than me coz of my grey hair his was shave so he does look younger more 😄😄
This is why I stopped. Within two weeks of a dye, my very white roots in the front were so obvious. We were leaving on a vacation four years ago, and I just decided I was done. I think I look okay. I get occasional compliments, but I love the freedom of not dyeing. Mine has never yellowed.
I went gray when I list my hair to breast cancer. I am so happy that I allowed myself to stay gray when my new hair grew. After taking the cancer "poison treatments", I realized that I had to take care of myself and you are absolutely correct about being free. That was 7.5 years ago that I found my freedom from hair color and vanity. Thank you for sharing your story.
I'm happy that you are well now! May I ask you a question? Do you use make up? I'm allergic to it... I really want to let my gray hair grow, but every woman that I know who left to grow her gray hair use make up... I can't use it (and I don't like it either...) Do you think I'm going to look good or just old and careless? Thank you very much.
Isn't that the best!!?? I love getting asked about my grey hair...everyone thinks I'm coloring it this way. And they're shocked when I tell them it's natural 😁
@@WelcomeToMyCurls I was about to say I bet that happens & ppl would pay good $$ to have your hair color & style. I sure would.. Too bad -We could never duplicate it. I've been working from home for just over a year. I understand about the frumpy feeling. People think I'm crazy for still wearing my work clothes. It's a mental thing. I feel good just dressing for myself. Thank you for your channel and you're openness and honesty. You've helped my mental health through this year, as well. It's like someone out there just gets it.
Hey Renee 💗 I completely agree...frumpy is no fun. Yesterday I just wore a simple t-shirt and shorts....but the fact that I took a shower, fixed my hair, put on some makeup, and earrings made all the difference in the world! I felt soooo much better!
I stopped coloring my hair about 4 years ago - I'm in my 60's - and my coloring is like yours - gray/white on top and dark underneath. And, YES - I don't care what others think of me. The decision came one day, when I looked in the mirror with my colored hair, and I said, "Honey - you're not fooling ANYBODY - you old!". Yes to Purple Shampoo - it's made such a difference in brightening up the gray. I think so many mature women look so glam and distinguished with their natural grays, silvers, whites and darks! Celebrate your age, and your aging process - so many in the world do not live past the age of 50.
43 yr female allowing my natural hair colors to grow out and shine Silver, gold and brown!! I was embarrassed in the beginning due to harsh comments from both family and strangers, but I no longer let any of that bother me If they don’t like it they can look away
Inhad to smile while listening to you. I'm gray, in my late 40's and at times people would let me feel bad about it, but I decided to embrace it and be the best me there is. No dying!!! THANKS!!
You are adorable. I’m gray now and have been shocked at comments from men I’ve dated. I’m glad to here from other women who are strong enough to embrace loving who we are.
I am 73 and I color my hair. A few years ago I decided to go grey completely and I let my hair grow out. It was a big mistake for me. I have very light, pale skin. I looked quite ill with grey hair, it did not go with my skin color. I saw how bad it looked and after keeping it for a while, thinking I might change my mind, I didn't and started coloring my hair again. I use dark blonde hair color and have a very natural light brown hair and because of the color differences in my natural hair color (dark brown, brown and light brown along with the grey) my hair color looks very natural, it's not all one shade and it's not dark, but a medium to light brown. It truly is very close to my younger days hair color. I dislike white roots coming in so every two weeks I color the top of my head since I have a bob with a side part and that keeps it looking good. I don't look 73, I look closer to 60 and I look healthy, not the way it looked when I let my grey grow out. I don't know how long I'll continue coloring my hair, but for now I love my 6N.
I have to colour mine too. I could never go blonde as the light colour washed me out and I looked ill ~ my face seemed to disappear! Exactly the same thing happened when I went grey. It was awful on me sadly. Lucky if you can go grey and look great.
Had too go gray! My hair is coming out do too alopecia so I cut it short and didn't want any more chemicals in my hair my only problem is my gray hair is coarser than my natural hair color any suggestions for a good conditioner I can use!
@@darleneharvey8648 Yes yes yes. My hair is coarser too. I use leave in Jaír conditioners. There’s a white one for hair growth and seems to be very nice. And also hair creams and vitamin k hair conditioner leave in. Just get some various ones of leave in sprays and creams for repair. Your hair will thank you.
I remember back in middle school, my classmates use to tease me, because my grey went straight through the middle of my head. There was a cartoon on tv back in the 80/90's the cat was named Peppie-le-poo. So funny, I didn't mind one bit. Love my grey hair.
@@zeemc2751 Middle school--that must be the record for going gray. The cartoon was Pepe-la-Phew. He was a skunk with a French accent who kept hitting on the beautiful cat who couldn.t stand him, but he never gave up trying to win her over and came up with all kinds of maneuvers to get her to fall for him. He had a French accent and would kiss her hand and up her arm--That cartoon was soooo funny. It was way over the head of little kids watching a cartoon.
I loved this video!!!! You said it all! It took me 18 looonnng months to grow it to my shoulders - I had all the blonde color cut off. I did it one month before I turned 60. I went to Denver and partied with The Rolling Stones on my birthday and I felt so light and free! I couldn’t get over all the compliments on my color - I have my grandmothers grey - silver down the middle and dark underneath- yet I see it transitioning still. 2 years hair color free and loving it! Hair is so much healthier.
I am 66 and I am so happy I stopped wasting money hair dye. Your hair is gorgeous. So happy to be the woman God created me to be and stop trying to be someone I am not. Love my hair even if it reminds me that I am getting older. Just thankful that I have hair, because there are women out there that have lost theirs.
I'm 23 and I do not have a single strand of grey but here I am tuning in😂 But when I do become of ages I think I'll need this advice too. So the sooner I know the better 😅😂
21 here, but already getting grey hairs 🙃 I'm still contemplating on eventually colouring my hair or not. Right now I don't think I will colour my hair but since I'm still so young I might, idk
I started going grey at 16 and a few years back at 55 I decided to stop fighting. Three of my kiddos inherited my gene. I am 97% grey or white/silver. I remember the first time I went to a salon for a post grey haircut. An older lady told me she loved my hair and wished her grey was my white silver color. Everything you said is spot on. I never really wore make up and still don't so that is one less problem. I use the blue shampoo not purple, because it is so white, only around once a month. Grey hair can be brittle too. So don't over wash. My hair also still grows fast, even post menopausal. Love my grey!
The possibilities are endless when you go grey. I finished my transition about 4 years ago. I've Grey and white hair since my teens, and began dying it when I was about 24 years old (I'll be 52 soon). My husband is very supportive of what I want to do, so last year, he gave me an undercut and shaved my sides. It was an awesome look! Since then, the meds I take have made my hair weak, and before I realized, there was hair all over the house! I've been wanting a pixie for a while, so last week, I gave myself a buzz with a #3 clipper attachment. I've never felt so liberated. I style it with Edge Control gel, and put on a satin wrap cap, it becomes a super cute, smooth pixie!
I went grey some years back, and i've never regretted it. The other similar freedom I gave myself was not wearing makeup except at formal or professional events--talk about freedom! Thanks for your channel :)
I went from coloring my blond hair red for 30 years to cover my white hair I’ve had since my 20s. Am now 53. Bleached it out in February and am growing out my white hair. Did a big chop and can’t wait to see how it looks once it’s all grown out! I love all your colors!!! Freedom yes! And my straight lifelong straight hair went curly with menopause! And I loooove it!
I am 87 and have been white for years..I had bleached it blonde since high school..noticed roots grew out white and lighter so had pixie cut that was easy to transition. Now I have not had haircut all year because of covid restrictions. It is long silver and silky not coarse..I am enjoying this new look even if old ladies usually have short hair!!
Thank you, I'm glad I found your channel. I only dyed my hair for 2 years. In that time I started eating more fruits and veggies and when my hair grew out it was darker! It has a color pattern that is fun to work with. Just parting on the other side changes the amount of grey that shows. I like being a positive influence for younger women to show that natural hair looks good.
As a fellow curly girl who is 18 months into going grey, I can say the freedom that I felt when I embraced my curls in my 30's is the same freedom I feel now embracing the silver/white/grey. Love what you said about the grey upping your anti-frumpy self care efforts. Exactly! It is such a great time to learn how to do some of those daily things that up my game overall- can't let things slide and that is a good thing.
I'm 46 and my hair is starting to go white. I don't know yet if I'll just go with it or continue to color it. I am so thankful for this video, because it gave me the information that I need to consider before making my choice.
I’m 16 months into the process at 43 years old. My gray is about cheek length in the front. It really is a long process. I have felt the freedom from the beginning. I hated dyeing my hair. Thank you for the wonderful tips along the way!
I'm blessed to have good genes.I let my gray hair grow out and thought people will think I'm old..Actually it's the opposite..I still have young face just gray hair..I guess staying out of the sun was a big help..NO WRINKLES.
Your hair is beautiful! I shaved my head to get rid of the color and went gray but it did not turn out well. I only had some gray but it made me look sick. I tried all the shampoos etc and it just got worse. I have straight hair and it’s very thick. I tried different haircuts and nothing helped. For me, I had to go back to coloring my hair. Everyone says I look healthier with my colored hair. Some of us just don’t have the pretty gray. You look amazing! Great video too!
I also look sickly and tired with grey hair. My complexion doesn’t look good in any light colors (grey, white, off-white, etc). I think the grey can work well on someone like this woman who has a high-contrast complexion: tanned skin, dark brows, dark eyes, and a dark hair base. In my case, I have very pale skin, pale blue eyes, pale sparse brows, pale lashes, pale lips, and my natural hair color is a dull, light mousey brown. If I don’t have color in my hair (and dye my brows, and wear mascara and a tinted lip balm), my facial features basically all blur together and I look featureless and worn out.
I wish I had known how many compliments I would get after going gray! My hair looks like I have highlights, people ask if I dye it, nope just stopped dying it. Would never go back!
I'm a very late Silver Gray wavy semi curly hair. Most is still dark, like a very dark Grey Black, its weird. When I trim, more like zig zag my hair, it of course looks darker. Anywho, gracias Gracias for the fyi regarding the care of the beautiful Silver, grey n white hair. I love how it looks. Bless you. ❤
I'm only in my 30s and I only have a few grey hairs. I have always done my own thing and wish to try to age as gracefully as I can. I love hearing what you have to say and it gives me confidence that going grey is just fine. I think you're beautiful!
Very pretty lady, thanks for your words. 52 and just started my transition. I still have a long way to go, but your video encourages me to hang in there. Thanks 😊
Your hair is beautiful. I too, let nature take over coloring my hair from blond to different shades of gray and it is freedom!! You are a very attractive woman and telling your story with hair color will help a lot of ladies out there, I'm sure. Enjoy your videos!
Oh my! Your head of black, white and silver hair is gorgeous! I am 66, have never colored my hair and have some gray around my temples. They are my natural highlights!
Hi Rena! I totally agree! I decided to go gray on my birthday January 2019 I turned 62 and then Covid hit and made going gray a lot easier since we weren’t going out about as much. I am now fully transitioned to white/silver and I absolutely love it! No more having to go every 3 weeks for hair color and saving money🥰
My last day of coloring was Jan 28th, 2020 with the intention that I'd keep doing it. I was vacationing for a month in Florida and mid February, realized that all of the nearby salons who could do my root touch up no longer carried my hair color. I literally could NOT get my hair done. I was in a panic and then it hit me.. "WHY do I keep doing this?" I googled going gray naturally and found you Renee! I watched your videos all weekend and made the decision that I was DONE. THANK YOU!! I still love your videos and love your hair. I would not have been able to stick with my cold turkey grow out without all of your encouragement and example.
2019 I decided to go gray but there was no way I would be able to let it grow out with that line of demarcation so I just shaved my head and let my gray grow in. Best thing I ever did!
I have a lot of respect for you for standing up for grey hair and the freedom of being yourself. People ask me why don't I color my grey hair. I tell them grey is a color. I'm happy being grey. Thank you for a wonderful video. I want to go watch your video on purple shampoo soon. 👵🏻
I love your hair color and curls! Yes, I'm enjoying the freedom too at age 53...and it has been 2 years now. I made the decision during the lockdowns and appreciate that I have more time, more money, more self-acceptance.
Because of your video, you have inspired me with your honesty and I will NOT fight going grey, but embrace it. I almost went through with the hairdresser visit to start colouring my hair because of starting to go grey. Not now. THANK YOU, I am looking forward to being myself and being free. Keeping my long hair and letting it go grey. I really can't thank you enough. Of all the youtube videos out there I have watched and there have been many! it was yours that showed me I can do it and I am not dreading it at all now. Thank you for your time.
When my hair went totally salt, people started holding the door open for me, and they started saying the word ma'am to me. That's when I started to feel a little older 😳. Still, I love my grey.😁
I’m about 1 1/2 year into my transition of going Gray. I appreciate your honesty of feeling a bit frumpy if you don’t put a little lipstick or blush on. Just a little helps me a lot to feel better about the new me. Very happy I’ve done it - but you’re right about the new maintenance it requires - especially putting on foundation. Each time I get a compliment it makes me so proud of myself.
I have watched many, many videos on transitioning to gray. Yours are by far the best! Thank you so much. I am 8 months into my journey & you have given me inspiration to continue!
I did the ‘big chop’ to 1” long. 4 months later it is a gorgeous curly shiny white/silver. So happy I just went for it. I have used purple shampoo once and it added a purplish cast to the white in my hair. Luckily it washed out.
I am so glad I found your video. I stopped coloring, permming, and straightening my hair during COVID. It was the best decision ever. I realized all the things you mentioned, so true. It is very freeing now that I show off my grey hair. And yes my grey pattern is still changing. It definitely needs constant moisturizing. I love my grey hair. Thanks for sharing 😊
My mom was completely grey by 25. Early greying runs in my family. I started getting greys in my late 20s. It started getting really heavy in my late 30s/early 40s. I resisted it, and never learned how to take care of my curls... until about 45. I'm 49, and totally natural now. I started doing curly girl, did the big chop from shoulder length hair to a very short pixie, because I had a ton of damage from dying my hair. I just didn't have the patience to try to grow it out in stages.
Three years in. Done transitioning. FREEDOM !!!!!!... is the best word to describe the feeling. I am proud of the result. PATIENCE is the prerequisite for you transitioning women out there. Worth it as you wouldn't believe it. Hang in there!
I’m about to turn 50 in a few weeks. I only have a few grays sprinkled throughout. You have changed my point of view on going grey. BTW your hair looks fabulous.
Don’t dye it! I remembered seeing my mom grow out her dye. She hated dying her hair, fearful that the cancerous compounds used in dark dye would hurt her. I had the additional “advantage” of not being able to breathe in a hair salon. It set off asthma really bad for me. I could not use ammonia to clean with, I sure was not going to allow it in my hair. I had gray streaks in my late forties and am all white in the front, now. Waiting for the back to go white at 62.
You're such a beautiful lady, you'd look good with gray/white hair too! Maybe as shoulder-length braids instead of your short hair style? That might look good too! Just a suggestion!
You look fantastic! I agree with the freedom of being yourself and not being bullied by cosmetics companies into believing that going grey equates to letting yourself go. I Found my first grey hair aged 15 - early greying comes from my father’s side. In my 30s tried dying it, the colour wouldn’t take in under 1.5 hrs ended up getting allergic to the chemicals. Grew it out and have never dyed since, luckily I have a lovely sparkly grey; when it yellows in goes the purple hair mask. When I gave up work In healthcare I decided to let my hair grow, to let the curls come back. Yesterday someone said it looked like angel hair - it was extremely windy so my hair was super fluffy! Have a happy birthday.
Thank you for sharing how you feel on frumpy days. It is true, taking a few minutes to prep myself makes a big difference in how I view my day and myself.
I’m not going gray yet, but I just love your channel! The dog videos and non-dog videos! You are so confident and an inspiration to women to love what they have!
Renee I love your grey, silver, salt and pepper hair. I’m nearly 8 months in and like you look back at pictures of myself with dyed hair and wonder who the hell I was trying to fool. It just looks so harsh and not flattering in the slightest. I hope mine will look as lovely as yours it so suits you. You are so inspiring. I love your videos of Maxie and Pollux too, they are a delight. It’s wonderful how much fun Pollux and brought to Maxxie’s life. Keep up the good work, we need you.
I am 14 mos. into my transition. The thing I feared the most was the demarcation line but as my hair grew out, I cared about it less and less. One of the reasons: the regrowth of my hair, particularly, around my crown. I get so many compliments and most are not about my grey, but instead they are about the thickness of my hair. Prior to ditching the dye, I was experiencing a lot of hair loss. I also learned about purple shampoo-I also use Joico. I rotate it with two other shampoos so it turns out that I use it every 9 days. It is a bit drying but it leaves my hair bright. Tomorrow, I'm getting a haircut and it's wonderful knowing that I'll be out in an hour instead of sitting there for 45 minutes with dye on my head. I don't miss it a bit. Thank you for your encouragement, Renee!
You were my absolute inspiration, thank you! It’s been a year in February for me so I’m into the second year. I’m 57 and it feels wonderful! I have dark hair and I am loving the look so far but like you, I just want to get rid of the old dyed ends but I have a ways to go yet so I will be patient like you were. You are such a great help to me on this journey, THANK YOU! I love your videos! I’m a dog lover too and you also inspired me with your dipladenias! They are great for my lanai in Florida! Also love your beautiful family videos and trips to Mexico!! God bless you!
A truly quality dye job is expensive because of the highlights required to be added, in addition to the overall color, to mimic the hair's natural tonality. Figure the commute to and from the shop as well as the hours and hours sitting in various salon chairs, and the time dedicated to the whole experience really piles up over a one year period.
What a beautifully honest subject. I finally, at 60, decided to “let it go”! My hair is long, down to the middle of my back and I still have blonde on my ends. But what I did to make it more fun was to use a colored conditioner on the ends! My grey hair is beautiful! I waited until the right time: When I was ready. But I enjoy that fun twist of pink added in and receive lots of compliments. We should all enjoy our “crown”!
Thank you Renee for sharing this. I think it's important that women feel good about themselves as we age. I am 50 and don't mind the greys as they come in. I think It's beautiful. 😊
You hit the nail right on the head. There's a fine line between "frumpland" and looking elegant and avant- guard when it comes to gray hair. A sense of style, knowing how you can wear your gray hair best, and make up, all play an important role in my life now (more so now); otherwise, the slightest wrong move, and I can look frumpy!! I love my hair, but I am still on the fence if one day I may go back to coloring my hair brown. It's all color and experiment; I don't think the color of my hair defines me at all, one way or the other!
I quit coloring at age 62. The last time I dyed my hair was January of 2018. No regrets whatsoever. I get compliments on how shiny and pretty my hair looks. I know what you mean about your hair matching your skin tones because I look so much better than I did with dark brown hair. To anyone who wants to try it I say go for it because if you hate it you can always start to color again.
Wow! I love it. My hair is going through the gray process. Not as gray as yours. I turned 50 back in January. I was never a big person on coloring my hair. I stopped back in the 90s. I love your hair.
When I retired 10 years ago, I stopped coloring. Let it grow out until I couldn’t stand it anymore, an cut it really short! It ha grown out really nicely and I wasn’t as gray as I thought. My hair was a reddish brown and now it just looks like it’s hi-lighted. One thing I didn’t know, was the texture of my gray is more coarse and curly that my old hair. It is freeing, and think of the money I’ve saved! I didn’t want to look like my 89 year old neighbor with jet black hair!
Sections of my hair strands developed a raggedy kink. Other than an odd wave in back, my hair was pretty much stick straight and silky soft as fine baby hair my entire life, so it's been adjustment to see this new and unusual texture up close every time I look in my magnifying makeup mirror.
@@christineberardi2904 ...I don't know your age but I sure do remember when Ronald Reagan was president. In his seventies his hair was one tone of dark brown which he insisted was natural, but we all knew he dyed it for decades.
@@msr1116 I am 74. I color my hair with Revlon color silk in lightest golden brown and it looks natural. No one should try to go to their original dark brown or black because that looks garrish. It is less than $5 a box...I dump it on like shampoo. wait 1/2 hour, rinse, condition...Done. I had it done in a light copper brown which looked natural and good as well. Honestly, I do not look 74...I fool young guys too and my photo ID only knows for sure. I feel old and ill when I look in the mirror with my grays. She asked for a chit chat but I can't agree with this opinion of "'I feel free"...Get the right color for your age and you will look 100 % better...that is my belief. God bless you.
@@christineberardi2904 ....Renee is one of the women for whom going gray is the right thing. For you, the gray doesn't work at all. Depends entirely on the person. As for me, I'd like to be able to tolerate the chemical odor better and may return to coloring my hair again since gray hair doesn't flatter my skin or eye color at all. Colorsilk was also my go-to brand for years and my best shade was Dark Ash Blonde.
Thank you so much for these honest reflections! You've helped me make my decision to transition to my white hair at the age of 56! It was truly great listening to you!
For me the factor is the youth of the face. This lady has a young face and suits dark hair. I am nearly 58 and will continue to dye my grey to match my natural brown.
Loved the video! Great tips. I'm three months in, and I think it is so exciting to see more gray hair in different places and a pattern evolving. I can't wait to see the end result! I am 59, but my 89-year-old mother went gray and her hair is like yours, still hints of black in some areas. So she was my inspiration because I have always loved salt and pepper and thought i have genetics on my side. The only thing I am struggling with is that I am an identical twin, and we have so much fun going places together or being mistaken for each other in our small town. Who knows, once she sees it looks good on me, she will follow suit.
Very helpful video. I'm 67 and have been coloring my hair since I was 17 - I think everything you have shared is a lot of what I'm feeling. My last color -highlights since January. Thank you for sharing.
I went grey very young & was very conscious of it. I’d have to get it dyed at the hair dresser for the last 15 years every month; but what tiled it off I moved to an extremely tropical area & it was like my hair literally was bamboo growing so fast it was terrible I literally had to dye My hair every 10 days!! The cost by this stage was out of control so about 18 months later after dying my hair for about 25 years I did get it CHOPED OFF! My hair is now a beautiful grey & curly near my shoulders. I think I could have bought a hair salon with the money I spent over the years. 😊 Central Victoria Australia 🇦🇺
Loved your video and everything you said. Contrary to my RUclips profile picture, I am actually almost 20 months into my grey transition and I love it! I agreed with everything you said and my husband and I were laughing and nodding the whole video 🤣. It’s SO true. I’ll be 40 this year and I’m SO glad I took the plunge. I’ve learned more about myself this last 1.5 years than my other 38! It has been character building and empowering to find my true self... thank you for your video!
I applaud any woman who can go grey and feel comfortable in their skin. I am 59 and every four weeks I color my hair to dark brown. I was a natural blonde until I decided to go dark. I only found one product that covers the grey completely for the four weeks. Glad it worked for you but I can't do it.
This is great. I’m 77 and about to stop coloring my hair FOR THE THIRD TIME! Everything you’ve said is true. My problem was that all the colors that I had worn before (very light skin and very dark hair) didn’t work any. So I went back to coloring a second time. I’ve since spent some time on Pinterest and have learned more about color palettes for my coloring. This is important. Also I didn’t understand how to change my contrast level, since it was so high. Now armed with a better understanding of what will work for me, I can’t wait to get started. By the way, your hair is gorgeous. I love the dark hair in the center.
I am 48 and 1 year 4 months in. I have only had a couple times when I felt bad about my transition and was tempted to get my hair colored but I didn’t do it. I actually really like my hair. I’m ready for it to be done growing out already. It’s at just past halfway point and I’m so ready to be done!! Lol I do notice people staring at me sometimes and I wonder what they are thinking but I don’t care if they like it. And I do see people who have darker hair but where the gray is on top is never quite the same color and it just doesn’t look good. I wish I could tell them not to worry so much about the grays! They are not as evil as we thought.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 same here my husband says am not the woman he married I said ok you have to get use to it , people looking at me I don’t really care am going all natural , good on you let us keep going
@@truemamle6184 LOL my husband isn't the same man I married either. No one is...we are all constantly changing and growing. Glad you told him to get used to it. LOL I did the same. You must be ready for it that's for sure! People are so crazy how they feel so free to give their opinions no matter what even when its not their body to make choices about.
@Lacey BallofChaosovich I just told them to buzz off and honestly I didn't care enough what they thought. When you don't either then you'll be ready... not your time right now and that is ok. It may be next year or 5 years from now but you will know what your there. Shame on them for being jerks to you. But don't let it bug you and do what you want when you want. Good luck.
@Lacey BallofChaosovich Hi Lacey, I kind of went through the same thing.... so, to somewhat appease others, I colored my hair back black and it looked awful😢! I stayed in the house (pre-pandemic) and wore hats! I couldn't wait for my gray hair to start coming back in...and when it did I was all smiles! I love the pattern I have in my hair, I'm free from color and I'm loving me! Like you, I also have a streak in my hair...soooo cute and I know you are as well 😉
I'm 65 and haven't colored my hair for several months now. I have a couple boxes of dye in my bathroom cupboards waiting for me to use. But I decided the heck with it. My hair growing out is softer than my dyed hair anyway. Plus it's a hassle to dye it. You younger ones here on RUclips have inspired me. Thank you so much! 💜
Are you going grey? Where are you in your transition?
I love my grey my curly hair..almost 50 ..happy for my transition 🤭
Quite a few people have told me I'm too young to dye my hair white, more have just been like Whyyyy?
No regrets.
I love it. You "transitioned" to your natural grey haircolor.

Best thing I ever did was to stop colouring my hair...and letting my hair go white. Freedom!
Yes it is more beautiful to be your self I am doing the same and not caking the makeup on and taking better care of my self omg I feel young at 63 all that other stuff is a ball and chain
Yes, no more mess dye bottles.

I had no idea how much I was going to love it. So much better!
My hairdresser encouraged me to go grey years ago and showed me how it would actually act as a natural highlight, give a lift to my face and surprisingly, make me look younger. He was right and I get so many compliments, especially from men, who tell me they appreciate that I'm authentic and they find that attractive. Who knew!?

Fifteen years ago I tried going grey. I still had more pepper than salt. So I went back to dyeing my hair. Last year, after finding your channel, I decided to stop coloring again. I now have the most beautiful, white pixie cut hair. And like you, I’m embracing the freedom.
At 14 months I cut the color out and went with a pixie, one of my favorite cuts. I feel like “myself” after so many years chained to coloring my hair. Even gray, the pixie makes me look younger.
I’m so happy to find women like me with natural grey hair while still being young. Nice to see I’m not alone.
It looks good.
"It grows that way" 😂😂

Not having to worry about my gray roots showing every single month is like breaking out of jail! I am glad I stopped coloring after 20 years!

Im going through the root thing right now.
This is why I stopped. Within two weeks of a dye, my very white roots in the front were so obvious. We were leaving on a vacation four years ago, and I just decided I was done. I think I look okay. I get occasional compliments, but I love the freedom of not dyeing. Mine has never yellowed.

I'm curious, what you mean by "comments from men." Have they been overall positive or negative or a combination?

I am 58... 2 years dye-free and loving it!! Thanks for this video, Renee. Agree with everything you say!
I'm blessed to have good genes.I let my gray hair grow out and thought people will think I'm old..Actually it's the opposite..I still have young face just gray hair..I guess staying out of the sun was a big help..NO WRINKLES.
You hit the nail on the spot with this video . Agree 100% with everything you talked about. It definitely is freeing!
You do look better and your confidence is amazing! Thanks for uplifting all of us who are doing this.
Bless you. ❤
I stop coloring my hair in 2020 and let me tell you I really really love my silver and white hair.
I feel sooo free!!
I get more compliments on my gray hair vs when I use to color it. My hair sparkles ✨
Awesome!
Rene, embrace all that you are, inner and outter beauty. your personally
out shines it all.
Be happy
From a man's point of view, you look very nice. Going to have my wife look at this video.
AWE
Your silvery white curls are so lovely around around face!
Awww thank you!
I watched all your videos during my transition to grey. You kept me going. This is such a great addition to your videos. Thank you!
2019 I decided to go gray but there was no way I would be able to let it grow out with that line of demarcation so I just shaved my head and let my gray grow in. Best thing I ever did!
This was very honest and very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for your story, it is a feeling of freedom. I stopped dying my hair doing the beginning of the pandemic.
Amen!!! It is Freedom😁
I colored my hair to cover my grey for more than ten years and finally decided enough is enough!!!
Wow this is a really eye-opening video! I'm a long way from going gray but have started thinking about it. Thanks for this!
I loved the process of going gray, so much fun transitioning. My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.
When my hair went totally salt, people started holding the door open for me, and they started saying the word ma'am to me. That's when I started to feel a little older 😳. Still, I love my grey.😁
Gray/Silver hair is SO cool!!!
Thank you! 😊
Awww yes.....be proud of yourself! It's a huge accomplishment :)
I think your grey hair looks great and your curls are beautiful!
Yay! Makes me feel better and more beautiful. It makes me feel like crying.
It's nothing wrong with have grey hair. Society make us believe that having grey hair equals old. It's not true. If so I would have been old at 15. 🙂
Yes it does.
If you leave the purple conditioner in for a hour it makes your grey hair great
Thank you for sharing how you feel on frumpy days. It is true, taking a few minutes to prep myself makes a big difference in how I view my day and myself.
The days I stay in PJs are the only days someone will knock on my door. Hahaha!!!
👍🏼
Happened to me last week when ups showed up honking for me to get my package. Neighbors dog was loose in my yard :( I was so embarrassed 😂
You looked absolutely beautiful with your colored hair, sorry. Now, however, you look simply magnificent. So much hair and curl envy 🥰
You are right however what I think she was trying to say is that she looked not natural. Like it looked she dyed her hair.
You are amazing. I stop coloring my hair nearly 3 years now and yes total freedom. Thanks for sharing ya story
A truly quality dye job is expensive because of the highlights required to be added, in addition to the overall color, to mimic the hair's natural tonality. Figure the commute to and from the shop as well as the hours and hours sitting in various salon chairs, and the time dedicated to the whole experience really piles up over a one year period.
that's why I started all natural henna and cassia, do it at home, by myself, and learned to cut my own hair as well. can be fun, too!
You are so welcome!
So agree....go for it!
I think brunettes go grey nicer than blondes...I would look like a ghost...
Wow!
Nobody should color their hair jet black, especially not an 89 year old. Revlon color silk is less than $5 a box.
You didn't look bad at all with colored hair. Personally, I feel only certain women can pull off having grey hair.
It helps to have a nice cut.
I agree!
She looked great with dark hair. I dont get it!
@@zeemc2751 I almost read butt 😂
Grey hair really fits you. You are so natural gorgeous lady 😊
Oh thank you!
Very helpful video. I'm 67 and have been coloring my hair since I was 17 - I think everything you have shared is a lot of what I'm feeling. My last color -highlights since January. Thank you for sharing.
I went grey very young & was very conscious of it. I’d have to get it dyed at the hair dresser for the last 15 years every month; but what tiled it off I moved to an extremely tropical area & it was like my hair literally was bamboo growing so fast it was terrible I literally had to dye
My hair every 10 days!!
My hair is natural silver platinum since I was 14 I was dark auburn but people now ask me..do you dye your hair? I say no it's natural❤
@@mariabrett6712 I'm jealous. Lucky you.
Same....I tried and felt invisible.
@@pepper1188So true but I already feel invisible without being gray. 😂
Good luck.

@Lacey BallofChaosovich
Hi Lacey, I kind of went through the same thing.... so, to somewhat appease others, I colored my hair back black and it looked awful😢!
