Absolutely amazing that there are still such high quality air conditioning manufacturers like Trane that can build a TXV equipped system that can last 5 whole years before it fails and needs a repair. Just like A coils that total replacement cost as much as half the price of a new unit depending on where you live, like here where our local repairmen charge over $150 per hour labor and 10 to 20 times their cost of the refrigerant and about 200 to 300 percent markup on parts. Give me a standard old fixed orifice unit any day. But I guess I can cry about that all day just like the fact that they don't sell R 22 new units anymore either. But I think I'd like to move to South Carolina just so I can get this guy to charge me a fair price for quality work...either that or Steve Lav's town. Then again, I'd have to move to upstate New York to get my cars worked on by South Main Auto youtuber too, man I'd be movin all over the place just to not get screwed.
Brilliant... your giving him something precious ~ your time, attention, and love so many young people never know ~ and of course instilling in him confidence, giving him education in electronic things and showing him that university education isn’t necessarily the best way forward for all professions, but highly desirable if that’s what he chooses. You sound like a sound bloke Elwood :)
this is what happens when you are a good guy and treat customers rite they will alowyes want you over any one else because you are the best at what you do
Using a hand held acetylene tank is mint. I guess it only works on 3/8" copper, anything larger would need more heat. What type of silfoss is that, seems low temp also.
I was just thinking back to when we had our system replaced. The TXV was bad from the start and it had to be replaced. Three years later it had to be replaced again. It's a puron system Recently the big line frosted and I thought here we go again. I cleaned the condenser coil and the A coil (as best as I could still mounted in handler). It needed it. Also cleaned the fan. Seems to be good now it's been a few weeks. Small line is warm the big line is cold and the fan is pumping out slightly warm air
Lol the longer I watch teds videos I scratch my head. But he’s a lovable guy. He does things a special way. Yeah, some things aren’t practical . But that’s why it helps old guys and young bloods working together and teaching each other stuff
If used on small lines, like liquid with little heat sinking, you can knock it out if you’re proficient. The TXVs are pretty tolerant, if you don’t jack around and keep pouring heat into them. Yes, not ideal, but it works; ‘put it to bed and move on.’
Obviously Jimmy the lizard knows that system inside and out. Good thing he was there to double check ur work. Yeah I know it sucks servicing units far away, being a good person and Doing the right thing can be a hassle sometimes. But you will sleep good at night
Anything under 102 PSI suction pressure with 410a in a residential system, will cause a condensation freeze over on the evaporator coil 99% of the time.
We have a lot of Jimmy s here in s Fl. Love ur shoes also and since I m almost retired after 30 summer s of doing AC I enjoy the way u figure stuff,,,,,,we use renew here since day one they figure the sticky txv oil issue We replace so many till the right stuff was added. I used to service telecommunications equipment. Troubleshooting is the same process for most stuff. So I would be interested in having you explain the gauge readings for the non hvac guy.
What type of solder do you use. I noticed you used map gas to braze. Does that work on bigger suction lines as well? I just some stay bright #8 to try out.
mapp gas brazing is likely best on 3/8th or smaller, indoor and no wind or air blowing (no fans), obviously not near any valves or anything that doesn't like extended heating times
@@stevekaufmann8109 I agree and if u know what you are doing and are quick enough u really don't have to use any thing but a wet rag on the txv. Just so it doesn't get too hot
No it won't. LCD displays flicker, but too fast for the human eye to perceive, but a video camera grabs images 30 or 60 times a second, so it can detect the LCD refreshing.
Don't really need thermo paste just a wet rag wrapped around the txv and it's only 3/8 " copper...if u are good with ur touching it should only take 10 or 15 seconds to make that solder joint, then quickly turn off ur acetylene and use just the oxygen from ur torches to slowly cool the joint
@@shawnbologna8281 Good point. Of all my years brazing copper joint's I never thought about cooling the the joints with oxygen. I would always just let it cool down and at some point spray it with water or nothing at all. Good tip. Thk u
Great video I use supco88 oil addictive it works good. Give it I try. Back in the good old days there where no micron gauges just pull a good vac with the valve cores in place and we road with it. The units ran for many years. 🥱
@ 10:11 who put the tripping hazard in front of the washer/dryer.. think they'd have ran around the unit instead of across the floor directly in front of lol
My SMAN 3 gauges had a leak around the sight glass. The rubber gasket pulls in when you pull a vacuum on those. I took my sight glass out and sealed the gasket with the clear refrigeration sealer and tighten the brass ring. This is the problem with the sight glass gauges.
Ian Berger 1/4 inch hoses through the gauge. Vac may not be as tight as the manifold states. The micron gauge is supposed to be installed at the equipment, not the pump.

Great videos but I need to chime in on the evac. Something totally wrong there, even if going through your manifold. I just did 60 feet of 3/8 and 7/8 and had it down to 250 microns in exactly 15 minutes and another 15 minutes to 160 microns, through my Titan manifold and Robinair 5 cfm two stage pump. I pull the schrader cores and use a 3/8 vac hose to the manifold which helps a lot. I would suspect your pump is bad and suggest connecting the micron gauge directly to it and see if you pull down to under 250 and how long it takes to get there. My pump with fresh oil gets to 16 (no typo) microns in less than 1 minute.
Great working conditions don't know why you wouldn't want to service them. If it's a little further from your radius service area just charge more travel time.
Changed one on a Bryant the other day, of course everything on the txv was brazed, when will manufactures learn about ease of service, not lugging tools and torches into a crawl space.

Glad o see someone else using MAPP gas in an attic. It does a Great job .Jimmy is better than some of the help I've had for sure.
You're kinda the Bob Ross of HVAC it seems. Nice video!
David Jastram what does that mean ? He’s a painter ? Seriosly I’m confused
Bob Ross didn’t mind helicopters.
I have always loved this, TXV valve, thermostatic expansion valve valve🤣 . Good video.
It's like "PIN number"! Personal Identification Number number.
That's one of the best tech.'s you've had in awhile Ted. Give the man insurance and 401k and see if he'll stick around 👍
He looks like that Geico gecko
I'd have had to ask if the homeowner's property was insured thru Geico...
Man you are a gentleman and a good technician. I like your style and your videos keep up the good vibes
Those helpers are seasonal, awesome in the summer but cant get them to even leave their house in the winter.
and always leaving a tail behind in the weirdest places
Good work and very informative. The only suggestion I have would be to use Stay-Brite8 on the liquid line joint.
And here i go thinking you actually got a new helper, i should've known better hahahaa
Lol freaked out when jimmy the lizard jumped on top of the fan
Bang Bang - Apparently, that was not Jimmy’s first rodeo, running across the fan grate.

There are lots of guys who do HVAC 101.

Hey Ted what is that oil treatment you use?
Why didn't you use core remover to speed up the vacuum process?
The more I watch. I'm thinking about going to school for it
Wonder why we fast forwarded through the install???
Give Jimmy a big bonus
I pull vacuum with the appion 3/8" hoses down to 350 microns in less than 8 minutes.
Trey Manning is that system vacuum or is that with a pump running?
least it isn't like 30 degrees out. Those days suck when it's raining, cold and having to pull a vacuum.
App ion core removers rated for 20 microns. Evacuate system in minutes.
Would have liked to have seen the valve replacement at regular speed, otherwise, a great video.
No wet rag on txv?! Alot of HVAC techs are saying 1/4 go bad when brazing. I personally use stay Brite near those with a rag.

Great video, my only question, if you knew you were going that far out why the heck didn’t you bring the big guns for the evac?
Does that field piece model of guage set always flicker ? It looks like it could be hard to watch.
No it won't. LCD displays flicker, but too fast for the human eye to perceive, but a video camera grabs images 30 or 60 times a second, so it can detect the LCD refreshing.
Glad you never did XB units. Glad Trane got out of the entry level units and left them to Goodman.
I was wondering did you replace filter dryer off camera or you don't have to do that when replaceing a txv.
Thanks.
R H drier may be internal to the unit so if he pumped it down then he wouldn’t change it.
He should, if drier was slightly blocked
Should always change the dryer anytime the system is opened
Hey Ted, I'm always paranoid when I braze next to the TXV and I always use thermal paste. Is it not necessary? Those gaskets don't melt?

He better stay out of the fan blade
Always like your videos. Keep then commim
I connect a CPS micron gauge to the system when I vacuum n it usually gives a lower reading than my fieldpiece digital manifold
That was the Geico Gecko trying to sell them A/C service insurance.
