  • Collin, K0NNK, is having some trouble with is antenna and a nearby repeater. He hit a 2 meter repeater full quieting but the repeater feedback was very fuzzy. His question is how big of an impact does receiving sensitivity have on receiving.

Nice one Dave. I would add that repeater noise due to mixing of other strong signals at the repeater site, or antenna system connections which are aging (oxidizing), could make it seem like the originating signal has an issue.

When I want to test a new radio or setup, I log in to Echolink on one or two of the repeaters near me and listen to myself. That way I know how well I'm hitting them.

I hear lots of what I assume to be fear of offending other hams with honest signal reports. Too many barely intelligible signals get reports of "just a little bit of steam, but no problem copying you." And so, really terrible signals don't get fixed. Be honest! Or, equip the local repeater with a "parrot" as Dave describes.

Is it possible, to use a repeater and transmit it from Alabama to California or hf only. As I'm still a technician still learning studying for the general.

Yes it's possible, but it would have to be on a linked repeater system with a 10 meter repeater linked in to a repeater on as on a band where a tech can legally transmit. Your signal would be repeated onto a linked 10 meter repeater where General class and up have access, the repeater owner/trustee is the one that has to be a General as they are the one legally responsible.
The best analogy is if a tech operates at a General classes' station, the General class operator is the control operator allowing you to use General class privileges while still being a tech.
      I hope this helps and 73 :)

You can also pick up a cheap scanner or baofeng that could receive the signal as you transmit. I had picked up a scanner that could receive the repeater signal while I was transmitting and I could hear myself on the repeater output while I was transmitting.

Signal into 2m repeater clear but signal out statically! Why ? Signal report from hams listening to input says full quiet!

Only on some repeaters im told im comming in low, i turned the mic gain up, messed with W/N nothing worked. Also i catch the tail of the repeater and it sounds like some1's making Frankenstein in the backround, and other users hear it too but only on my closest repeater.. uv-25x4 with ed fong 2m 70cm about 60ft in the air.. they say maybe im getting rf bleeding back from my btech rps 30m power supply but there the only 1's hearing this others dont.. brand new to this and learning but all connections are tight idk what to do other than test maybe with a dc batt.. any1 have thoughts?

    What is full quieting?

The 19" antennas often wiggle around enough to cause audible picket fencing on tx. The shorter antennas...I've had counterfeits outperform brand names supplied with radios. There's still a lot of dice being rolled in the antenna choice.
Honest signal reports, +1. The only way to go.

As the owner of numerous repeaters, I hate to say that I found the discussion a bit wonky and confusing, especially a new user.

INFO: check your local repeaters for a 'playback', sometimes called 'DVR playback' function on the repeater. This will 'play-back' your transmission to let you know how you're making it.

😲 Don't kerchunk the repeater. It's very bad etiquette, technically illegal, and some repeater owners get very upset about it.

    • @paulplack490

Only illegal if you fail to ID in the following 10 minutes.
