After seeing the Amygdala MV, this video became a lot more clear. To me, Agust D (the one with the scar) represents yoongi's shadow self. He's a symbol of all of his rage, greed, pride, depression and trauma. No matter how hard yoongi tries to kill him, he always comes back, symbolizing how he can never completely erase the dark parts of himself.
Agust D said that he wants the MV to have a lot of similarities with Daechwita, so he obviously wants us to think of Haegeum as Daechwita pt.2 . I love all of them
I'm sorry for the length of this comment. Fantastic reaction, as always. My opinion on the story between the two, and this is just my theory, relates to how much of the Haegeum MV was inspired by the film The Dark Knight. There's a quote in the movie that says, "You either die a hero, or live love enough to see yourself become the villain." In Daechwita, King Suga is a tyrant and "lower class" Suga is the hero, with each having the scar showing that they're one and the same. Lower class Suga becomes the hero by shooting the king, taking his place. In Haegeum, only Detective Suga has the scar. My theory is that he is the same Suga that shot the king, going on to become everything that he used to fight against, effectively living long enough to become the villain. He fought the king to take down the system, but them became the head of that very same system, enforcing the laws of that system that he swore to fight against. I think that the lyrics relate well to this idea also, being a slave to all of the things that you think are setting you free. "Differentiate freedom from self indulgence". That's my take, anyhow. 💜
This is one of the most thorough reactions I’ve ever seen. Thanks for being so attentive and caring enough to do all this. It really shows you appreciate the art and effort of Yoongi and want to give him your full attention and support for all aspects of his music and the story and feelings he wants to express. 💜
I love how this is not only a continuation of "Daechwita", given that "Haegeum" is also a traditional Korean string instrument. But there are so many parallels between the two. During the premiere, I didn't have the captions on because I wanted to just vibe to it. By the end, Agust D started to embody the Joker. Then I rewatched it immediately and I grasped the whole thing.
Thank you for your reactions! So, here's a little (a lot ahaha) about the MV and the song. Agust D is literally talking about everything that is wrong in the world right now. Since haegeum is a traditional instrument but also means liberation of prohibition. He is really asking who's on board for the revolution, for the new world, for the new kingdom and to get on board now. So we can fix everything that is broken. This is a masterpiece. The lyrics and wordplay are incredible. This is what rap in my humble opinion should be. A way of making people aware of all the social, economical issues and more. And Suga just did that. To add further layers to this, it’s really pointed commentary on capitalism or essentially: feudalism. What became his weapon in the beginning (his tool to criticise & stand up) became a utensil. In the end he has to partake in this because of obligation. literally; to feed himself. A Thailand ARMY (shout out to Sky_hxneul) was kind enough to educate us and explain that this was filmed in Thailand and that place is called the "Thief Market" Rattanakosin Island's (Old name of Thailand from 1782-1892) and it was the first international shoping center in the period after the abolition of slavery.. This is how he explained it : so this market came to exist because the people in the palace freed from slavery when they moved out of the palace, they received some goods from the master and also stole some They then brought those goods to sell them in this area. Now we know that Haegeum is a traditional instrument but also means the liberation of the prohibition. SUGA: "Haegeum can refer to the traditional instrument but Haegeum as a lift on a ban. In the past, when I was young and I played things like rhythm games, there were songs called "unlocked songs" if you beat a stage, you get the unlocked songs. Idols... Honestly, despite not committing crimes even a little thing becomes this big or doing something that could be considered a controversy, it becomes "Are they allowed to be like that?" I didn't really understand it even when I was young. But of course, that didn't mean I went around causing trouble. So, in the music video, there are smoking scenes and things like that. If this becomes a controversy when l'm 31 then really, as a social phenomenon, it makes me strongly wonder how I'm supposed to accept this. Like, let's unlock those banned things. And since people can see so much information within the palm of their hand, imagining or thinking. Even I started not doing them. So, regarding those things, let's get liberated. With advanced technology, we're able to get all kinds of information and see the situations happening on the other side of the planet while sitting. But I strongly felt those things kind of prohibiting my life actually. I can live without walking on eggshells as much. You have to live doing the things you want." "Scar dude”, is Agust D. He always has a scar. Representing his own scars. His alter ego, Agust D. He's always portrayed as a villain, a person in power, but nevertheless a villain. He's Suga's opposite side who holds lots of anger, fear, sadness, resentment, vengefulness his darker emotions. Previously in Daechwita, BOTH Suga AND Agust D had scars. He was in a different state of mind, he said he had lots of anger, but here only Agust D has a scar, it's not as red, meaning he's healing, but Suga has none. He's trying to get rid of that side of himself here. And Suga is Suga, himself. It's always been Suga VS Agust D. But he said in IU's palette that he's changed a lot and has learned to forgive and be a happier person, so Agust D can go to rest now. That side of Suga, Agust D, is gone....for now. He says he's not sure when he'll come back....IF he ever comes back, however he said if those strong emotions return, then so will Agust D. It's kind of bittersweet. He said somewhere in the physical album that from this point on, we can expect to see "SUGA"'s debut....not Agust D, but SUGA in his next album. So, in order: First Agust D, blonde and scarred, killed by Second Agust D, black hair scarred: killed by Final Agust D is actually Suga. The first Agust D was created in the past, as seen in AMYGDALA. I think that is interesting that the original Agust D became the Mad King and the D-2 Agust D became a rich looking cop idk if that's his intention but it very much reads as a critique on corruption by money and power. Especially as he kills them both at the end.
just a heads up for when you watch the amygdala mv, although it shows a part that connect daechwita and haegeum, the mv is all about yoongi's personal struggles and it's his own story visualized. It's not just a storyline for the mvs like the BU is but his actual in real-life struggles that he faced since he was younger including his accident and other very sensitive moments so I hope you go into that mv with this in mind:) I can't wait for your reaction. Personally, I haven't stopped crying ever since the mv came out.
Same. I'm afraid to watch most reactions to it - I don't want to see anyone who doesn't treat it with respect. I'll watch it here 💜 but overall it feels just... It's special.
I Knew there was a reason why I clicked on this video. I absolutely love how you went back to watch Daechwita and then re watched Haegeum. There are definitely a lot of similarities between both of these MVs. I appreciate that you actually did your research on Haegeum while/during this because, realistically, I think that’s how most of us non-Korean speakers are. . His MV Amygdala is absolutely beautiful. I’m looking forward to your reaction to Amygdala.
Agust D is how Yoongi deals with his dark side. That's why they have a scar in their face, they're his persona. I'm saying them because there's some Agust D. in Daechwita you have a king and an idol. both had scars because they were the same person but the Idol is probably Suga at that time and he killed his old persona, the blonde king who's wearing tradicional clothes representing the past, he's blonde like the 2016 Agust D when Yoongi was really angry (he said this by himself) because he's not feeling like that anymore. In Haegeum, i believe the one with no scar is Yoongi himself who wanted to kill the other with a scar. I think it's Suga from Daechwita since he's not blonde and the scar is healing as if he's losing space to the one who's cured (Yoongi). The whole concept is amazing and i really enjoy watching your videos a lot.
btw to answer your question: yoongi used to smoke when he was around 18 or so but quit after becoming a trainee. in the mv, he smoked because it's something that idols get heavily criticized for...so it's to make a point:)
The closest English translation of ‘Haegeum’ (in this context) is Liberation. Even tho it could also mean an instrument or to unlock something forbidden.
Fun things to look at: In Daechwita, the King Yoongi's executioner was also the butcher in the village that Boss Yoongi walks through (you can see them exchange a look) and then that butcher/executioner is the one who hides the gun that Boss Yoongi uses to kill the King. In Haegeum, there's a man in the restaurant that calls Detective Yoongi while Mob Boss (?) Yoongi is stealing the money and as Mob Boss Yoongi walks out, they exchange a look. That same man is the one dunking Mob Boss Yoongi in the barrel of water that has the gun in it... So both have the same dynamic between the two Yoongi's (almost a chaotic good vs chaotic evil or a corrupt power vs anti hero) but then you have the double agent who is working against the corruption. Also, I like that you almost slipped and called the mv a movie...because they definitely could be.
The parallels are so strong that it really is almost but not quite a direct retelling. Haegeum's story is more morally gray and the emotional content is different. He told the same story twice to say different things, which I think is really interesting.
Amygdala is out now 4/24!! ❤ so is R-chita the episode of Sugas show with RM takeover as host & AgustD as guest! Love your reaction! Love D-Day album! Suga is serving excellence! There are 2 dance challenges out too 1 with Jimin & 1 with Hobi!!❤ it looks to be where the show Suchwita is filmed...so maybe..just maybe there will be a J Hope guest episode! Suga his grown so much, dealt with his trauma & moves on triumphantly! ❤💜
Also Haegeum" is a traditional 2 string instrument from Korea. But it also means something like "lift a ban" or" remove prohibition" That's why the lyrics are about freedom vs self indulgence and protest/riot or revolt.
Believe me when i tell you i spent my free time bingeing all your reations especially BTS and TXT ( even though ive watched all the videos) i just love your reactiins. Also suga was on fire💥💥
Just like in the lyrics of Haegum I think we are all free to interpret the meaning in our own way. What I see is this, in both videos Agust D and Suga are facing off against each other. One side is a humble peasant/thief the other a powerful yet corrupt symbol of authority. The humble character seems to be in an endless battle to kill off the sides of himself that could lead to self indulgence and an over inflated sense of self.
I was waiting for your reaction on the chopsticks scene and you did not disappoint.😂 Love the video, the lyrics, the beat. Suga did nto disappoint either. None of them did. 😊
In my thoughts,,, The chapsticks as a tool can be used as a weapon to kill or eating noodles. It’s your choice as freedom but not as self indulgence. It’s Heageum. Two strings in one body. 😅
I love it whenever anyone brings up the dichotomous pairs throughout the song and video. Two strings, two sticks, two conflicting impulses... And we're always between them, the truth encompasses both. It's a morally complicated song and video 😂
To me this is the story i get from the video. This is the king and Agust D from Daechwita reincarnated to the present. The king is again gained power being a high ranking corrupt police officer (as he is leaving the police station the other cops solute him indicating high rank) But at the end Agust D once again out smarted the cop by laying a trap by getting the king's men to turn on him/by replacing them with his own men. It could also be that he was an undercover/rogue cop because he got a lift in a cop car in the end. So it could be a metaphor for the continued fight against his inner self in Daechwita or maybe in this song social problems.
I think one of the most important things is that the final Agust D doesn't have his scar. Amygdala (warning: it's heavy) gives us the meaning of the scar... And he's talked about merging Agust D and Suga, that he no longer needs that alternate identity. So... are you also going to react to AMYGDALA later? a Trigger Warning though, AMYGDALA is part of our brain responsible for storing past traumas and etc.. it's a heavy MV
THE 👏MAN 👏HAD 👏THINGS 👏TO 👏SAY... but I literally had to pull up the lyrics separately, because Suga with that longish, dark, wavy hair was entirely too distracting to digest them together. 🥴🥴🥴
The storyline: a hoodlum robs a local crime boss. It turns out that crime bossis high up in the police department. Its only tangentially linked to the lyrics, if at all. Think of New Jeans 'Ditto'. The MV was entirely unrelated to the song itself.

Haegeum has two meanings, it is a traditional Korean musical instrument. It means to unlock what is forbidden, Hae means unlock, geum means forbidden.

Great minds think alike! 👏👏👏👏

He is a bona fide genius. I want to see this man starring in a thriller or action film. The lyrics are so incisive and complex - I love him for that.

I think one of the most important things is that the final Agust D doesn't have his scar.
Amygdala (warning: it's heavy) gives us the meaning of the scar... And he's talked about merging Agust D and Suga, that he no longer needs that alternate identity. So... When I put them all together, it's the arc of Min Yoongi's life as expressed through Agust D - but bringing him together with Suga by the end.
"It moves so fast. My poor brain" - you're speaking for all of us. I've watched it so many times now 🤣
i had to pause to come here and say i thought it was the rush hour restaurant too 😂
Omg thank you haha i’m glad it wasn’t just me haha

@@nabsjung This is also a good point, as I DO think he makes a point that this is a cycle and may have to be dealt with more than once in a lifetime.
wait till you see the behind the scenes.. that poor stunt double getting his face shoved into the tub by suga lol
