- Erik explains the difference between the many styles of Riding mowers, lawn tractors, and garden tractors, and goes into great detail on what each type of mower can do for you. From mowing grass to plowing snow, tilling gardens, and re-grading driveways. Each class of tractor can handle a variety of tasks. Just make sure you get enough tractor for your property.
With the help of this video you will know exactly what you need!
This is one of those videos where I think, "this could have been bad had I not watched this". Absolute game changer. I just bought my home and I know very little about this type of thing. I appreciate you!
I made it years ago when I bought my home with a HUGE lot. I needed a be riding mower and couldn't find the info I needed. It took months of searching to come up with the info needed to make a decent purchase. After that I decided to make this video to help others.
I am really sorry the "know it alls" are beating you up. They must not have anything better to do but criticize other people. You posted a terrific video for someone like me buying my first mower of this type. I've only had a self propelled walking mower until now. I don't have a dad or big brother or husband to ask these questions of. You probably saved me alot of money that I didn't need to spend on a sub compact tractor. You were articulate and knowledgeable. I look forward to your next one. Btw....you don't have to accept comments on your videos. Now I see why other people don't.
Well, I agreed with someone else he would be better off with a Ford 8N or 9N for what he uses the Husqvarna ---clearing driveway, garden etc. I don't consider that being a know-it-all. Yes, it is a good video and I don't watch anyone that disables their comments. I find that, yes, there are some asses but there are a lot of knowledgeable people with good suggestions. Growing up we had a TE20 Ferguson w/attachments that we used for exactly this and it had a surprising amount of power for a small tractor. There are a lot of these old tractors still around.
I enjoy the comments section almost as much as some of the films, as someone else pointed out you do get the moron's and just horrible people but you also get well meaning and useful comments as well, your post was a while ago so how did you get on with your mower? what did you chose? and what led you to that decision, Personally I found once you got one others followed, and non of them for much money, one was even in a skip when I saw it, just had it running the other day due to covid time, its an ill wind that blows nobody any good, as they say, stay safe.
This is the heck of a good channel to let people know what they got to get or need . GREAT information
Thank you for the kind words!
WOW! your video was heaven sent, we just signed the papers on a house with 2.5 acres, gravel road to it and plenty of work to do. We are shopping for our 1st tractor and knew nothing about the differences, the options, the up sides or the down sides. Thank you for taking he time to share your knowledge and equipment with us. I will look for your other video regarding the garden tractor.Thank you again-
I was in the same position 5 years ago and after all the trouble I went though, I decided to share all that I've learned. I'm glad you got some use out of them!
Thank you... my husband talks of all these things! I never know what he is talking about! Now I know!
Happy to help!
Thank you for making this video;I bought a home with 3 acres a couple of years ago and have been completely overwhelmed by the amount of work it takes to accomplish anything. . this year it dawned on me that I may need something more than a lawn mower, shovel, and my truck aid me in my efforts. . Now I'm in the process of learning what that is and how much it's going to cost me... this video will be a big help!
Aaron Stutsman I have 8 acres and started with a Craftsman 18 Hp. Mower. I got a deal on a Kubota BX2230 and haven’t used the Craftsman in 4 years. A 3 point hitch will really make life easier.
Just bought a 2.3 acre property with a long driveway and plans for a large garden. I was really hoping not to have to buy a SCUT, and your video was exactly what I needed to make the decision to get a garden tractor. Thanks for taking the time to pull this together. Really helpful video.
I felt like I was sittin on the porch talkin to a neighbor. Thanks buddy. I just got a small lawn tractor. Not pulling nothing. So just cutting the grass here.
Eric. Thank-you so very much for this video. We recently moved to a rural area and have close to 3 acres that we're looking forward to clearing and shaping. I didn't know the difference between a riding mower or a garden tractor and this video has helped me greatly. Thanks!
I glad to have helped. Good luck with your new property!
Excellent video for the average home owner that didn't know this stuff. Thanks and have a thumbs up.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the dozer blade. Got one on my 1983 Craftsman GT 18. Have a 2006 Simplicity Conquest hydro 50 inch cut. I use on a big dump trailer n back up mower. Got a 2006 Toro LX460. Wich I use for mowing n a yard trailer. Grew up farming. I sold my farm tractors. Just need the smaller ones for the homestead. They work just fine. Looks like a nice area your in. I'm 45 min. East of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The dozer blade is a God send. Use it all year.
I usually only use my dozer blade for snow, I would see using it to spread light gravel or soil.
Super helpful video, Eric. Thanks a lot for taking the time to explain all this. I truly appreciate it!!
Glad it was helpful!
thankyou erik for info keep up the good work always learn from people that has done it i am 66 always want to learn more
Glad I could help!
Very informative video. Thank you for explaining everything so well!
Glad it was helpful!
Hello, I think you have done many folks a much-needed service, by explaining the distinguishing characteristics of the styles of tractors. I agree with one of the commenters, who stated that something akin to an 8N or IH Cub etc, might be more practical for some applications; however, those old tractors are getting expensive and hard to find, in decent shape. there's also the issue of storage space. It's just plain cool to be able to accomplish what an older, larger tractor can do, with a small, new-style "Garden Tractor". Less chance of tipping over, and the subsequent, potentially deadly injuries too. I like your delivery too. You spoke clearly and kept it clean, hence I can show your video to my 7-year-old son, without any problems (he loves all sizes of tractors, and we are currently working on a 1972 Montgomery Ward, "Squire"", (Gilson) with a 10HP Kohler, and 1974 John Deere 112 (Kohler again). The JD has the factory electric deck lift, that just stripped out last Fall. I haven't had time to take anything apart yet on it. but will soon. The JD is an "in use" tractor, and the Squire is a long-term restoration (Father Son project. My question to you , as many others have asked the same thing is: Where did you find/buy that linear actuator/piston. cylinder (whatever anyone wants to call it)? I am getting a sleeve hitch for my JD, and would very much like to copy what you did on your Husjy, by using that same lift actuator, the down pressure is an excellent benefit! Again; Great Video!
Thanks for the kind words! I do try and make all my how to videos as well as pretty much all of my videos kid friendly. No cussing or that sort of stuff.
As for the sleeve hitch upgrade it can be found here:
johnnyproducts.com/J_Bucket_HTMs/UNI_Sleeve_Hitch.htm
Be advised that the price had DOUBLED since I bought mine 4 years ago. Many folks are building their own using the stock manual sleeve hitch and a actuator from a place like this:
www.surpluscenter.com
They have great deals on hydro transmissions tires and those actuators.
I've used them before and they shipped fast.
I hope this helps.
I have a 1999 Murray lawn tractor with over 450 hours on it still running strong. The deck just gave up last summer. Fun video.
EXCELLENT VIDEO! I'm in the market to purchase a new lawn tractor and was looking at the top of the line one hundred series John deere's. Now i'm thinking more like an entry level 500 series. Your video just cost me an additional 4k.....thanks! Keep the videos coming, perhaps you can talk on challenging yards, big hills, site clearing, etc...
Ha! Well, better to spend it once than get the wrong one and have to do it twice. I'll see what I can make regarding those video suggestions.
Thanks for the videos. I picked up a craftsman gt3000 to play with. It's about a 2001 model. It looks like it has a 331 3000 that's about equal to your k66 except the elect posi. I was cleaning it up and noticed the tires. They still have signs of the little nubbies from when they were new. I watched several of your videos. Thanks for the knowledge
That is a GREAT tractor!!! Enjoy it.
I've got a 1973 Sears ST12 it's all original except the paint Has a 3 spd. transmission with Hi/Lo range and it does an amazing amount of work. Good video.
Bet it was an orange and yellow Roper.
Bill Stokes all of the suburbans built from 66 til discontinuation were ropers
Still have my "Roper bilt" SS-12 in original blue metallic and white.
Even had it in a parade 20 yrs ago pulling a small trailer with gold mining stuff on it.
I have watched many videos on RUclips, and I have to say, your parents must be very proud of you! You are passing along very valuable info to your viewers, you speak with honesty & INTEGRITY! I hope people will join me in thanking you for taking the time and effort in doing this awesome video!! You are a gifted teacher! Keep up the helpful work!
Awesome video man, well done. I think the biggest mistake people make is buying a yard tractor or "light garden tractor" with too small of a transmission, and then try to use ground engaging attachments. Your video clearly describes the issues with that approach. I'm looking at buying a garden tractor for my property of about 3 acres and this video has convinced me to spend the extra money or blow the transmission prematurely. Thanks again.
+Kristofer Brown I'm glad it helped you to make the right purchase!
Don't be to scared though. I have a YT 4500 I've been doing everything lawn oriented . Even bush hogging with deck high and rough blades on fairly rough ground for 12 + years on 3 acres in 92 + degree weather in FL. It only has the 21 hp BS single and the K46 tranny. Replaced head gasket, And may have to do the Hydro fluid soon in tranny ( starting to go slower at top speed is indicator) . Thats all in repairs in 12 yrs. Oh, a little plastic steering bushing.
i have a old School 73 12hp Cub Cadet 129 Garden Tractor and that thing is a tank all Cast IRON and Metal it plows snow, garden and pull trailer and cuts grass it does everything. good video
Those old Cub's are TANKS!
There is a reason that in 2020 this video has 1/2 million views. Super educational. Information holds up. Peace.
Thanks for the kind words!
I really liked his video. He provided a TON of detailed information.
Thanks! I had a really hard time figuring out what tractor to buy and what model did what. I figured making this video may help some other poor soul out when it comes time to buy one.
Good video thank you! Helped me decide on the 2022 husky ts-354xd. Needed something a little bit beefier than a lawn/yard tractor to pull some stuff around the yard on occasion like some fallen trees (cut up of course) etc… so far I love it. Feels a lot better/stronger than the older craftsman lawn tractor I had before. Thanks again
Glad I could help, they are more expensive but worth it!
Greetings from Reno, Nevada.
Thanks for the in-depth review. I just bought two used YTs. One a Craftsman and one a Murray. They both run. I put new tires on the rear of the Craftsman and 8” wheels and tires on the front. I used it with a tethered land plane yesterday.
Now I’m going to Lowe’s to get a Husqvarna XD.
badger I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.
I got it in my about tab.
I have to say this is one of the most useful videos I've seen on you tube in a long time. I wish I found it earlier. I jut bought a garden tractor to replace a zero turn that I blew a transmission in. I was looking for info on the sleeve hitch and what I can actually do with it. You showed me exactly what I was looking for. Thanks
Thank you for ALL of the information, Eric. I have always wondered what was the difference in each -- and now I know!
Glad I could help!
Great video. I know I paid a lot more then I needed to but I bought my Kubota BX 23 almost 20 years ago and haven’t had a single issue with it. I love it.
Scrapper I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.
I got it in my about tab.
This was an awesome review video. I call this a gem. It answered pretty much every question I have because I am looking to buy something like this and need the gardening and snow capabilities, and I have relatively steep slope on my property. Just want to say thanks for this.
No problem. I tried to cover every aspect of mowers and tractors so that people can make the right buying choice.
Thank you for this really informative and well presented video. I feel a lot more educated now than before watching it. I recently purchased a 16 HP lawn tractor with a 42 inch mower deck. It is about 3 years old, has been very well maintained, and the price was fair when compared to the same or similar machines. Although branded Mastercraft it is identical to Craftsman and several other brands; I think all are made by MTD. I am welding up a towed wagon, and am also considering adding mounts for a self-powered 31 inch snowblower. I was given the machine as scrap; the 2-stage blower and engine work fine, but the wheel drive is not economically repairable. However, it struck me that the forward section, separated from the defunct drive, with a motor mount welded on, would allow the snowblower section to be attached with 2 pivoting arms to the frame. Swivel casters underneath the snowblower/engine would support its weight, and the tractor would steer. This avoids a long frame extension and a heavy added weight at the front, as well as trying to drive the blower with the tractor engine, .The chute could be aimed with cranks, or by 12 VDC motors with switches at driver's seat. Having most of the parts on hand, it should not be hard to build. The blower engine rotation would be backwards if the motor were mounted with its driveshaft near the blower drive pulley; but a jackshaft could reverse that. The clutch could be either a belt tensioner or centrifugal. I have seen similar "self-powered" blowers mounted to ATV's. With swivel casters supporting the blower and its engine, two mounting arms pivoting where they attach to the frame would avoid adding a large weight to the tractor's front end. This is just a sketch right now - a lightweight plow would be much simpler. In any event, I've digressed. I want to say thank you for a very helpful and information-filled video. I have a much better idea of what the tractor will, and more importantly will not do. Thanks for putting this information together - it's a great help for newbies like me.
Thanks for the GREAT info! Especially about the Differential/transaxle. I can't believe how many manufacturers do not specify what you are getting in the most important part about a Garden tractor. They talk about cup holders and led lights! Husky dealer could not tell me what size the new TS Garden Tractor diffs were. Had to contact manufacturer. The new TS are K66 but I have a problem with not being able to change the fluid and the filter too. Tks again!
Great job super presentation!
Thanks so much!
One time mtd made almost all mowers. 1st mower 46 blew out hydro trans. Nice big hole in it. Bought new one installed used couple more years till I got plow on truck. Also bought a 42 craftsman before repairing 46. I fixed it because of how much less time it took to mow my yard. You wouldn’t think 4 inches makes a difference or at least I didn’t. I now know it makes a big difference. That’s why I fixed it then sold it when it was about 8 years old and was in great shape. Deck wasn’t rusted at all but cleaning it makes a difference. Great video
Awesome video, I have only one correction to mention. The piston you have on the Husqvarna for your sleeve hitch is not hydraulic, it's gear driven screw. I could hear the clutch kick in when you reached the end of travel on the piston, hydraulic doesn't make that noise. Needless to say, not a major sticking point because everything else you included for advice was stellar. Great job!
Yup, you are right. Thanks!
I started off with a cub cadet lt 1000 bought in 2013 then I got an allis chalmers 416 from 1970 after 5 years of hard hard work the lt 1000 is starting to fail in the tranny. I just would like to let you know you are 100% right in terms of ground engaging a garden tractor is best and in terms of mowing the Home Depot cub cadet can not be beat in comfort and mowing quality.
Thank you for taking time to make this informative video
Glad I could help!
Hi, I enjoyed your video and reading the comments. To all the critics and naysayers, I thought the term tractor referred to a wheeled vehicle that powered or provided power to implents or equipment to achieve whatever task was intended irrespective of size. Just my opinion. I think most of us do the best we can with what we’ve got, and any new input/idea has to be a plus. If something isn’t to ones liking then ignore it. Simple. Keep posting and thanks.
I have an old craftsman like your LT model except it's the LTX 1000 and has lasted me 17 years with NO other problems besides the blades being dull every now and then, and some battery issues. People REALLY do underestimate Craftsman.
I couldn't agree more. Craftsman makes a good tractor.
You mean husqvarna makes a good mower. They are all made same place just different colors and sticjers.
Some craftsman are made by MTD.
You start talking about mowers and tractors and all these brokeback cowboys get all offended trying to show who has the biggest tractor. Calm down guys. This video was awesome. I have an acre and just started building my house and this video helped me greatly. 55,000 views great work Farpoint this is what RUclips is for. 👍🏻
"Calm down guys" is what women say...
I just got a troy bilt bronco 19 hp mainly for mowing grass and snow removal in the winter I live in up state pa buddy had on and he loves it n it runs great
I've been very gentle with the box scraper on my DTY4000. I did have to modify the three point hitch to fit my $600 yard tractor. (bought it as a mower before I knew about implements) But I've actually used it more than my Diesel Massie Ferguson full size tractor. It's just about taking small bites and not over working the transmission. You can hear when the transmission is straining. I'm not saying your wrong.... Just that I am using a yard tractor as a garden tractor.... We'll see how many more years it lasts..... This year it got a snow blower!! fun winter ahead!
Great to know about that heavy duty transmission with a locking differential . I have a Husqvarna with a transfer case, hi and low with three speeds, manual , so six speed….Heavy duty frame, V2 ,54” deck, but it is one wheel drive, maybe 1.2 ,a little help , 2002 year. Thanks for all the good information. 👍🏻
Glad I could help- The husqvarna with the locking diff for me is a game changer, with what we do here, I would not be able to do it without it
I did not install weights on my tires as it has alot of rotational energy that is transmited back to the transmission when moving from forward and reverse. Over time this will wear out the hydro stat trans. Instead I installed 14 gallons of washer fluid in the rear tires of my craftsman gt7400 23 inch tires. 8lbs a gallon comes to 112 lbs weight. Best thing is when you come to a stop the washer fluid "slips" so has little affect on the drivetrain. Took about 1 hr to install, remove valvestem core, rachet strap the tire colapsing it, hose clamp a hose and funnel onto valve stem laying flat on ground with stem up and release the rachet strap. Pulls in a gallon in 2 minutes.
Interesting. My K46 Tuff-Torq burned up trying to use front-wheel weights, rear-mounted grass collector while working on uphill grades. Lasted about 2 years at once-a-week, 1-hour-at-a-time mowing.
Thank you for posting this as it is very helpful!
The most informative video I've seen so far.. thanks!
When I put the snow blade on my rider I also put two cement blocks on the seat. The extra weight on the rear tires did wonders.
Love the video, thank you for explaining the differences. I think a heavy duty garden tractor may be a great asset on a small horse property, so thank you for the information, I really appreciate it, now I'll better know what I am looking at when I am reading Craigslist ads, or even advertisements from retailers.
I live in the country and I needed some real heavy equipment to get the job done around my place. I have a Sears Craftsman LT-1000 which I still use to mow the lawn and it is currently hooked up to the lawn sweeper. I use the John Deere Z-445 Zero Turn Mower to do the majority of my mowing with. I use my John Deere 790 tractor with many implements to take care of the lawn, including the landscaping rake to pile the dead grass and leaves I sweep up with my other mower and lawn sweeper. I am planning on doing some gardening next season and have a new tiller for my utility tractor and the middle buster, and turning plow to it also. You need dependable equipment if you live in the country to take care of your place and I tried to get all I needed.
My Dad used his old Cub Cadet 129 with a 12hp Kohler engine until he bought his Kubota BX25D about 8 years ago. That little Cub did the plowing in the winter on a long uphill driveway, to grading the driveway after heavy rains, to mowing their couple acres. My Mother-in-law bought her John Deere x475 new back in 2004, and that is a serious heavy duty garden tractor.
Matt I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.
I got it in my about tab.
Nice video clearing up the differences with these machines.
Thanks Eric. Now I know, and can put it to good use. That means the video was a success! I've never known the difference between the tractors or the amount of attachments they could or couldn't handle. I'll be waiting for an attachment use video showing how much each attachment can handle for its size. Keep up the great videos and remember that for every dozen viewers, there is usually one rotten egg in the bunch. Good day. Jpol.
I have the LGT2554 Husqvarna with the K46 and knock on wood I havent had any problems with it. I disc a 3/4 acre garden, dozer blade for moving gravel, one bottom plow, 2 stage snow blower and mow 3.5 acres. im just now pushing 1000hrs. Only issue was the notorious Kohler head gasket. I put a trailer hitch on it and haul 8" felled trees with it also. I must have got the one built on a Wednesday
Great to hear it! I used and abused a YT3000 Craftsman with a K46 trans and after treating it like a Garden tractor for years it finally gave up at 550hrs. Still not bad considering how it was used.
Thanks for your great videos. I bought about 13 acres but the land is like a wash board. I have a Husquvarna TS354xd, Ag tires with weights, a Johnny products sleeve hitch with actuator. Which implement would best level compacted soil with grass? Should I buy the ripper, plow, disc furrow, or box blade? Or, do I need to use a combination of these?
I think the ripper might be the best- Trying to level 13 acres might be a tall order with that, but if you do small sections at a time, it should be manageable. I found the disk harrow was not a great investment for us.
Great Video ! Has anyone else noticed how hard it is to find used GARDEN TRACTORS all of a sudden ?
Everyone is suddenly into trying their hand at a small garden this year!
@@FarpointFarms I just bought an older Craftsman GT3000 (built by Husqvarna with 917 model code) 23hp Kohler engine for $75 from a Habitat for Humanity store but has no deck. I would take that one you "probably will never use" if you want to send it to Missouri.
I'm in the market and this is by far the most informative vid out there. Thank you so much. Just subscribed. God bless and take care, from Texas
I'm glad I could help!
Fabulous! Thanks for the video. Researching to buy my first rider for 1 acre with slight hills. This is very helpful.
Dad had, I inherited a craftsman yard tractor. 16 hp which Dad had the jets ported out to make 18 hp, which could also be bought in a more expensive model.
Despite the inclines of the property he did not upgrade to the chevron tires.
I did buy him a clipping collector which he used and composted a lot of grass. Good buy.
Craftsman tractors tend to hold up really well. Take care of it and it will take care of you.
i completely agree. i have a small farm and I work my garden with my John Deere X500. no need to pay 16,000 to have a compact tractor. the tractor has not ever hesitated to do anything I have asked of it.
There are plenty of 6100 Kubotas for sale around $3,000 with belly decks and three point hitches.
What a great video,
I have been watching lawn mower/tractor videos to educate myself before purchase and the information provided could not have been presented any better. Just an excellent video!
Thank you very much!

Great video thank you
you're welcome
Interesting on the old 2015 pricing on some of these. That Husky equivalent GT is now over $4000.
Hyperinflation sucks!!
Best video I have watched in a long time, very informative and clearly presented. Big Thanks for Posting!!!

I love my John Deere E110 42 inch Hydro. So rugged and so much for the money... about $1700 at Home Depot. This and Cub Cadet were top rated on Consumers Report and I chose the JD especially for the B&S engine.
The Briggs motors are one of the best if you ask me.
Thank you for taking the time to show and explain, and find additional photos. I learned a lot. God bless.
I got the same husqvarna garden tractor. It is fantastic, with the fabricated deck, it handles pretty big stuff with little abuse, I have used it as a light duty brush hog with no issues. The locking rear end works great too, used it to pull stumps that were left by previous home owner to a burn pile over 250 feet away, stumps had to have weighed in excess of 200 lbs and were drug on the dirt. I intentionally was going to use it for more work, but working on a yanmar ym 1500 diesel tractor to do gardening and snow removal. But love my husqi, glad to see yours works well for you too.
Great video explaining some of the differences.... the shame is most "yard and garden" tractors built these days are nowhere as capable as those built 30 years ago. I love the older machines!
Great point! The old saying-- they don't build them like the used to
@@FarpointFarms I have a newer Husqvarna 22hp machine for the grass/aerating/thatching.... but a 1985 Allis Chalmers 919Hydro for the real jobs.... she's a tank with wheels!
@@imxploring imxploring I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.

Thanks! I now know that the mower my grandpa got years ago and somehow ended up being mine is actually a yard tractor. You said the main difference between a LT and a YT is that the YT's are a bit bigger and beefier. Judging off the size its definitely a yard tractor. The tires are a bit bigger, it has a 24hp engine and I managed to pull a small 5x8 utility trailer with it when I put a ball on it. Haha!
Your video is very helpful both for seeing the difference between the real deal and the lookalikes masquerading. You did an excellent job of showing the implement options that expand the usability. Thanks. I suppose for many, it is obvious but this is sadly not information one can just pick up by strolling the show room floor. They do not even list the model of transmission let alone what it can and can not do dependably. This should be basic information.
marty I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.

Excellent narration.
Thanks!
Hey 👋 old video but good info 👍🏻 just came across this. Looking at a case 444 JUST for snow blower/blade, i have a smaller husky lth140 couldnt imagine being able to plow with it 😂 i
You really need a larger tractor to plow with. Even with our Husqvarna with locking diff- it can get stuck. That mower is good up to about 5"---6" if it is "light" snow.
Cool video. Thanks for sharing. One of my neighbors recently gave me his 2011 Craftsman YT4000 tractor with its mower deck. It needed a new drive belt to run, which I put on. Still needs a couple of other things (coil and idler pulley), but this thing, with its twin-cylinder, 24hp B&S, just romps. Being as I'm stuck in the city limits, with only the typical quarter-acre lot, it's way more than I need, but a lot of fun!
I just bought a JD 190C second hand with 300 hours on it. It has a K-62 transaxle (1"), so it likely has pretty decent torque. One thing I notice is that on your Husq and the GT6000 the wheels have half a dozen nuts holding the rims on,so it's like you said - some of them may look beefy - and in the case of the 190C have a fairly powerful trans - but the design and the frames just aren't meant for ground engagement. But I'm just looking to tow mulch and a spreader. I am intrigued by that in scoop you show in other videos, though... Anyway, love your videos, man - they're great!
Excellent video! Thank you so much
Glad I could help!
My Craftsman lawn tractor is over 30 years old and the Briggs is Cherry. I do a complete servicing of my two lawn tractors every year. I discarded the mower assembly on the craftsman 5 years ago and just use it for hauling a wagons and impliments for gardening. The newer tractor is the primary mower.
30 years is proof that if you maintain something it will last forever!
That helped a lot. I didn't realize you could do all that with a garden tractor. I have a quarter mile driveway also that constantly needs work. And need some way to spread gravel and such. I was looking at small tractors that were as you said $12,000 and up. So it's nice to know there's a cheaper option.
0:38 that snapper riding mower is CUTE!!
I’m at a very specific age apparently. An age where I wish I had any reason to buy a tractor. Yard or lawn.
Ahh, welcome to being an adult
So my lawn tractor is an old craftsman lt1000 im adding a sleeve hitch to it because i have a nice yard tractor that i use to cut grass with.
The lt1000 was broken and i fixred it and im keeping it. Ill be using it to plow and when it breaks ill be able to put new better stronger parts inside it and keep going. Im not anticipating saving money, im anticipating not needing a 3rd tractor yet lol
With the prices of mowers/tractors today, it is worth fixing the one you have.
Great video! Thanks for all this information!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very helpful video. I wish I watch your video earlier. I just found out that I bought a Cub Cadet Lawn Tractor, but I need a garden trator. I guest I have to set aside $200 every year. Eric, is the transmission easy to replace?
It isn't bad at all. I might make a video of changing one, so stick around.
@@FarpointFarms I'm looking forward to. Thanks
Awesome video! This is just the info i needed. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! This video is older now, but many many people still find it helpful.
Great video, thanks for sorting it out. Now I know what to look for to expand the garden. Thanks!
Great Vid.. lots of real usable knowledge.. thanks..
Man those aggressive style tires are just what I need for my husqvarna yth22v46. I live on a sloped back yard and we been getting a lot of rain and my stock tires spin quite easily.. i have had to get off and man handle it a few times. Just ordered 2 from home depot and cant wait to test em out on the next mow
They will help, the tires on them are called Turf Savers- they are designed not to tear up the grass
Really useful information , Eric I was aware there were attachments for grass cutting mowers, just not the size or type of machine required to pull,or push them. Thanks for your time. I am in the market for one for graded my drive and for General hauling around my two acre plot. Thanks again. Good luck from Scotland.
Thank you for a very informative video
Glad I could help!
nice video man I use a 1977 sears 14/6 with ag tires and rear weights it's 40 years old and still goin
Man this has helped me a lot.
I have a 40 hp tractor with loader and all the goodies, but watching this makes me want something a little smaller and more maneuverable. That is until I have to shred 5 acres. Mine also comes in handy to move round bales, but bigger isn't always better. Great video
It's true. The larger tractors can do it all, but sometimes a little unit can be more fun and nimble. When I upgraded to a "real tractor" I got a kubota BX as it was the smallest one I could find. Happy with it, but I still use my GT for a lot of things.
Nice video !
I bought a GT 52xlsi last year and let me tell you that i am very happy with my Husqvarna, it's a BEAST with the locking DIFF. :-)
I have about 180 hours on mine, and LOVE IT! I turn my garden, back blade my driveway, and plow snow with it, Its never let me down.
great video I had a LT 54 inch cub on hilly land and killed it broke the differential wielded it no more slip trans went now looking for something new GT sounds like the way to go anything caught your eye that can be used like your set up
awesome video. A required viewing for any hobby farmer. Eric rocks.
super useful and insightful - thank you very much for sharing!
Mario I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.
I got it in my about tab.
Thanks, you probably saved my transmission
I am so glad this video still helps folks out!
Enjoyed your video, very informative. Thought about buying a snowblower attachment for my yard tractor. 24 horsepower. Not a garden tractor. Good idea or bad idea?
I see no reason not too. It should do fine. Just put some weight and chains on it.
This was incredibly informative for me thank you for the insight 👍🏼👍🏼

Thx for posting this. I just bought a used, excellent maintained condition, Craftsman LTX1000, 21.5 hp B/S, twin, gear drive, specifically for pulling these attachments: A 21 gal sprayer, a 40” plug aerator with 150lb tray limit, and a lighter duty lawn dethatcher (not the heavy style rake you have). Question is: am I looking at a short life span? I only plan to use each of those attachments only one time each per year, and about a half acre of completely flat land. Thx.
Excuse me James I'm not familiar with that to answer but I suggest watch a 13 part series called _What on earth happened_ by Ewaranon to learn that the earth is not a globe.

I beat the crap out of a LT2000 with a sleeve hitch and a rear blade for about a year until I bought a old Craftsman GT3000 and the difference is night and day. Garden tractors are hands down way better for pulling. Like you said, LT’s and YT’s will do it, but a GT will do it so much better. I have to give the LT credit tho, it did awesome with its beat peerless hydro rear end, AND turf tires. The LT2000 still going today but is retired to shed life until I can fix all the problems the deck had, but it still runs awesome and drives.
Great to hear that it worked out for you while your search for a GT went on. I was the same way.
@@FarpointFarms Best part about it was I got a running and driving one and the parts one for $50 together!

Thanks, for all these years none of these terms had ever made any sense to me. We have a 2008 John Deere LA175, seems to be about in between the Craftsman and Husquavarna you showed. It has the K46 which I've taken out and changed the fluid on, even though they try to make it so you can't, which got rid of the whine it started to have after 200 hours. It does has a V-Twin Briggs in it and pretty large diameter rear tires. It also does feature an hour meter and 54 inch deck. So from what I can tell it's meant as a larger unit for cutting bigger areas of grass, but still only for pulling small trailers and accessories. I do wish I had that locking diff feature, can't say how many times I've gone through slightly damp grass on an incline and one of the rear tires just started spinning, I'll have to look into those tires you showed. Great video.
Aidan Montgomery ...The K46 transmissions are good but they put them in tractors that need stronger transmissions. I have a JD S240 with Kawasaki motor, it also has the K46 transmission and it’s starting to make the whining noise. Did you make a video of how to remove transmission and change fluid? I would love to do that to mine.
I have have to disagree with you on the usefulness of the turf saver tires; they are great for saving your back, by elevating heavy bags, such as quickrete concrete mix! Looking at buying a mower unit, next season. Thanks for the no BS. info.
Thanks
