I know CGI can date real quick, but i have to say, that opening shot, zooming and panning in on the moon crescent shaped space port still wows my eyes. With reality TV poisoning my faith in live action entertainment, I look to animation for imagination and ideas.
"You know what they say, Jim! Familiarity breeds, uh... well, contempt. But in our case--" LOL! This movie has some of the best lines. Nearly peed my pants on this one
darthstarkiller1912 "doctor, to mule and blabber about a treasure map in front of this particular crew demonstrates your level of ineptitude that borders on the imbecilic, and I mean that in a caring way"
The character of Captain Amelia was developed with the idea that Emma Thompson would be providing her voice. "We offered it to her and she was really excited," Ron Clements said. John Musker said, "This is the first action adventure character that Emma has ever played and she was pregnant during several of the sessions. She was happy that she could do all this action and not have to train for the part"
+TheTricksterQueen first: she was very rude to the doctor. Second: the only reason you like women like her is because you're a very insecure woman who is uncomfortable with strong male characters. Thus you desperately need a fictional female character otherwise you can never face the world.
Luke Dearey what the heck are you talking about? Strong female characters are great why does it mean we're insicure just cause we like them? It really sounds like you're the one who's insicure since a strong female character is so intimidating to you lol
Georgethe Hernandez honestly i'm glad they didn't. i don't trust disney's sequels. everytime they're bad and they ruin the 1st one. Treasure planet is my favorite disney in the universe since it's been released when i was 8 and i would stand it if they had ruined with a sequel or anything else
+Sataandagi96 That part with "it works better when it's right way up and plugged in", sailed right past me when I watched this as a kid. Now it cracks me up every time :)))
I absolutely LOVED this movie! The 18th Century look of it mixed with sci-fi tech was quite literally out of this world. Such an underrated Disney adventure film!
anyone else think that this scene particularly was made for 3D? I mean if this was released today it'd blow a few people's minds such an underrated film, but you get a good hint of JGL's Voice Acting Skills which is always good to see in the guy who's voicing the Main Character of Hayao Miyazaki's last film :3
dannybob42 this movie re-released with 3D and a bit of tweaks to make the graphics look crystal clear and it would definitely be a redemption for this movie :3
If I may, I love the reveal that the moon is a space port. When doctor doppler frames the moon as the the spaceport, You'd probably assume that the spaceport is on the moon. But as we transition into it and see that the moon IS the spaceport, it's a brilliant reveal, showing some high-quality animation work that looks so much better than a lot of more modern animations, despite this movie likely having a smaller budget.
And THIS is the sort of character we need. I mean women like Mulan and Captain Amelia are just so natural with who they are. I have never seen better developed, strong female characters than these two. For some reason people have lost ability to create them.
I wholeheartedly believe that if this movie was given a second chance in the box office it would do so much better than it did in 2002 Such an amazing movie
the robot and hairy alien that Jim was asking were the ship is both are John Musker and Ron Clements the Directers of Treasure Planet. they also are in Aladdin as the 2 guys Aladdin was in between when the not nice prince guy was going to the palace.
[Zoom in on the crescent moon, which is actually a specifically shaped spaceport, massive and bustling with many different aliens and spacecraft. Jim walks out and sees different aliens all speaking various languages until Delbert comes in behind him wearing a giant metal suit.] DELBERT: Jim! Oh, Jim! Wait for me! [Clanking] Well, Jim, this should be a wonderful opportunity for the two of us to get to know one another. You know what they say, familiarity breeds, um...well, contempt, but in our case-- Jim: Look, let's just find the ship. OK? ANDROID: Second berth on your right! HAIRY ALIEN: You can't miss it. Jim: Hey, thanks. DELBERT: It's the suit, isn't it? l should never have listened to that pushy two-headed saleswoman. This one said it fit, that one said it was my color. l didn't know what to do. l get so flustered. [Bumps into Jim] Ooh! Oh, Jim! This is our ship! The R.L.S. Legacy! Jim: Whoa! Everything shipshape? MR. ARROW: Shipshape it is, sir, but I'm not the captain. The captain's aloft. [We see Captain Amelia jumping amongst the mast and sails before landing gracefully on the deck.] AMELIA: Mr. Arrow, l've checked this miserable ship from stem to stern, and, as usual, it's... spot on. Can you get nothing wrong? MR. ARROW: You flatter me, Captain. AMELIA: [noticing Delbert] Ah, Dr. Doppler, I presume? DELBERT: Uh, um, yes. l-- AMELIA: Hello! [She knocks on Delbert's helmet] Can you hear me? DELBERT: Yes, I can! Stop that banging! AMELIA: If I may, Doctor, this works so much better when it's right-way up and plugged in. [She plugs Delbert's suit in] DELBERT: Ooh! AMELIA: Lovely. There you go. DELBERT: If you don't mind, l can manage my own plugging! [He unplugs the suit] AMELIA: I'm Captain Amelia, late of a few run-ins with the Protean armada. Nasty business, but I won't bore you with my scars. You've met my first officer, Mr. Arrow. Sterling is tough, dependable, honest, brave, and true. MR. ARROW: Please, Captain. AMELIA: Oh, shut up, Arrow. You know, l don't mean a word of it. DELBERT: Ahem, excuse me. I hate to interrupt this lovely banter, but may I introduce to you Jim Hawkins? Jim, you see, is the boy who found the treasure-- AMELIA: Doctor, please! [Some of the crew members look over at the mention of treasure] l'd like a word with you in my stateroom.
Treasure Planet was never really a movie Disney was keen to make, however it was a passion project its directors had wanted to make for decades, and since these were the guys who gave Disney The Little Mermaid and Aladdin they finally let them do it. However, Disney didn't put in enough effort to market the movie and the way they scheduled it doomed it to failure. Treasure Planet was released in winter of 2002, an extremely stacked movie season. Chamber of Secrets and Die Another Day had just come out, and within the next couple of weeks so would Star Trek Nemesis and The Two Towers. It didn't stand a chance against competition like that unless Disney hyped it up, which they very much failed to do.
Terrible marketing, big budget, and a huge risk as it adapted a story that was already adapted by Disney before and flopped. Also this film released the same month as the first Harry Potter, and 8 mile. So yh... that's why it flopped.
About 20 years old and would you look at that the captain, the one in charge, is a WOMAN. And no one doubted it for even a second or felt offended by it.. society needs to grow up
The makers of the film named it R.L.S. Legacy after Robert Louis Stevenson, the author of the novel, "Treasure Island", from which this movie drew inspiration. Cool huh?
1:43 too bad some kinds of creatures can't communicate with each other. Just imagine what would happen if that thing met someone without lips, tongues or other organs which can make those sounds.

Man I wish space was actually like it is in this movie it’d be less scarier. Also named my federation cruiser in elite dangerous after the main ship in this movie R.L.S legacy
This movie is the definition of "Ahead of its time"
Wyatt Peyton Maby that’s why it’s so unappreciated
It's based on a book that's over a century old
@@niccvier The real story why it's so underrated is because Disney execs set it out to fail right from the start.
A lot of people think this movie was awful, but I always thought it was pretty darn good!
@@ryonhatcher45611:24
I loved the relationship Amelia and Mr Arrow had, true friendship, verbally bash eachother and still have a cheeky banter afterwards.
The sad part is that she didn’t know that Mr. Scroop killed Mr. Arrow by cutting his life line and getting sucked into the black hole.
@nathanielcruz6675 probably not until the mutiny.
I know CGI can date real quick, but i have to say, that opening shot, zooming and panning in on the moon crescent shaped space port still wows my eyes. With reality TV poisoning my faith in live action entertainment, I look to animation for imagination and ideas.
It's great when CGI is only used sparingly and efficiently.
this movie had masterfuly combined 2D and 3D
+Jack Murphy true🎊
Severely underrated. This whole movie is one huge pile of "hell yes".
"You know what they say, Jim! Familiarity breeds, uh... well, contempt. But in our case--"
LOL! This movie has some of the best lines. Nearly peed my pants on this one
RLS, Robert Lewis Stevenson Legacy, the author of Treasure Island.
Honestly such an underrated film, captures the pure essence of adventure through both the amazing story / animation and the incredible music.
Emma Thompson did an awesome job as the captain in this movie!
darthstarkiller1912 "doctor, to mule and blabber about a treasure map in front of this particular crew demonstrates your level of ineptitude that borders on the imbecilic, and I mean that in a caring way"
darthstarkiller1912 I heard she was pregnant when they recorded her voice.
+anthony luetmer She was, which is one of the reasons that she loved this role, it required little physicality on her part.
Yes she did!
I love strong female characters that aren't rude.
TheTricksterQueen Like Captain Amelia? :)
TheTricksterQueen she kind of is at first, but luckily that changes
+TheTricksterQueen first: she was very rude to the doctor.
Second: the only reason you like women like her is because you're a very insecure woman who is uncomfortable with strong male characters. Thus you desperately need a fictional female character otherwise you can never face the world.
Luke Dearey what the heck are you talking about? Strong female characters are great why does it mean we're insicure just cause we like them? It really sounds like you're the one who's insicure since a strong female character is so intimidating to you lol
Luke Dearey Who broke your heart
Man, I wish they made a sequel.
Overall, action, adventure, humor, plus Jim's cute! :D
Georgethe Hernandez AND Silver of course!
Andrés Pétur Axelsson Exactly!
And Jimmy should be the captain in there, seeking for Silver.
Not to mention Emma Thompson as Captain Amelia.
Treasure Planet has the most beautiful and stunning visuals Disney had ever made. And the Music. Awwwwww. The music is so good and so memorable.
I like how the ship is named the ‘RLS Legacy’.
R.L.S., for those not aware, is referencing Robert Louis-Stevenson, the man who wrote Treasure Island
I thought it stood for Royal Light Ship.
@@stephenbyrne2170 It probably does, but it can be both! That’s the beauty of clever easter eggs.
