Adam: Brilliant work! Very much in the spirit of Haydn and Beethoven. Beautiful writing - especially for the winds. Great contrasting colours and textures.

Very captivating opening, so characteristic with the forte chord, then the excellent flute-clarinet trio. Great buildup of colour in the main theme. Good string slurring everywhere. Love the sudden outburst in the triplets. Good natural horn writing, but I’d have switched horn 2 and 3 in the chord right before reh.B, and given horn 3 a D right before reh.C.
Clever solutions for the 16ths figuration of section B, and interesting exchange of winds and strings, I like the pointed pizz. accents. I have my doubts about the ease, and thus effectiveness, of the violin parts in m. 24-27 (disclaimer: I'm a cellist, just imagining violin fingering).
In all, a magnificent score showing great skills and imagination, kudos.

Great work, Adam. A perfect balance of going big in parts and pulling back in others. The big parts feel unforced and inevitable.

It's amazing how those 4 notes from the horns with the timpani at the beginning of the phrase make the effect last for the whole phrase. 👏🏽👏🏽

I love the smoothness and balance at the start of the Allegro section.

Thanks for the great feedback as always, Thomas! This era is a bit of a blind spot for me as a writer, and so it was really illuminating to really sit with Beethoven for the first time since I was in college. I too am enjoying hearing all the different ways we interpret this period!

What a great opening! I also loved the way you orchestrated m11. The trading off between strings and woodwinds at m20 works but I would also say it's the part of your orchestration that's most out of the style of Beethoven. Nice job, Adam!
