  • At the start of 2023, things in Ukraine looked hopeful - a counter-offensive was expected and there were high hopes Ukraine could make a decisive breakthrough.
    But this did not materialise.
Since then, new military aid has dropped by almost 90 per cent and billions of dollars' worth of US funding is stuck, caught up in a Congressional row.
At the same time, Russia is tripling defence spending. So with the conflict in Ukraine about to enter its third calendar year, Forces News has taken a look at where this war in Ukraine will go in 2024.

The error was not arming Ukraine in early 2022, if Ukraine had been given equipment / training early it’s 2022 offensive would have continued before Russia could build deep defence lines. Now the west needs to commit to Ukraine long term

Russia might have changed from attrition warfare to another type of warfare in such instances. Pretending Russia would have ever allowed Ukraine to become a FOB for Nato and an instrument of Anglo-American led political pressure upon Moscow, is where it all went wrong.

Besides, there was NO WAY that counteroffensive was ever going to come as a surprise. There was a single obvious front where a successful attack could have a decisive strategic impact, where a large scale attack was also possible. And the air was so full of observation drones that large troop concentrations were easy to spot.

Gradual advances for Russia, a gradual shift of the war of attrition in favour of Russia. Increasing pressure from western governments for Ukraine to negotiate, but no dramatic breakthroughs on either side. The war of attrition will continue for another year. Unless there is a dramatic collapse in the Russian political system, which seems unlikely, this is just going on. Look to the Middle East for escalation.

Almost half of the German Leopard 2 tanks delivered to Kiev have already been put out of service. This data was reported by German Major General Christian Freuding, head of the Situation Center Ukraine in the Bundeswehr. He also acknowledged to the German media that some of Russia’s military capabilities were initially underestimated in assessments of the current conflict in Ukraine.
According to the head of the German military, the decision to supply German tanks to Ukraine was actively discussed only a year ago.
The reason of heavy losses is not only the Russian fire. According to the German official, one of the reasons for the loss of the German equipment is the inept repair of combat vehicles by Ukrainians. He clarified that the Ukrainian military cannot repair tanks in accordance with the German rules of operation and maintenance. As a result, the parts of the tanks are wasted fast. Freuding also explained that the repairing of German tanks in the Lithuanian maintenance center will also be ineffective, since the delivery of equipment takes a long time. The journey from the Polish-Ukrainian border alone takes 36 hours, he pointed out.
Earlier, German journalist Paul Ronzheimer reported that the training centers in Germany, where the Ukrainian military is learning to operate Leopard 2 MBTs, are only half staffed, which indicates sharp shortage of personnel in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Your wording caused an itch, talking of heavy losses, when they got something like 18 Leopard 2A6 from Germany, and these tanks having been deployed and in heavy combat for 6+ months now is a WILD exaggeration if I ever heard one. This is a massive, high intensity conflict that no western country or it's serving soldiers and officers have any experience with, you would probably have to look for Vietnam Vets to get people with similiar experiences, those guys would would be 70-80 years old, and that was still a very different war, and still a war with heavy insurgency and a lot of guerilla warfare, and not really a conflict between two peers that is absolutley hammering eachother every day of the week, along a front that is like 1000 km long, all things considered I think we should call 8-9 tanks being damaged or destroyed small losses, but it is a high percentage of course, of a small number of tanks.

This war will not come to an end. Not in 2024 nor in 2025. The pervidity of politics is that outside of Ukraine nobody wants this war to end as this war is business. Yes I can’t stand this war. But we are not entering year 3 of this war but year 10, and if we want to be blond this conflict grew out of the peace treaty of WW2, simply Germany didn’t want to be the original aggressor. I don’t say the peace treaty caused this conflict (it just ended one and all hoped this was now part of history) well that would be nice and naive- the peace dividend of post word war 2 just run out and with closing that chapter many shortsighted people who don’t understand history nor politics nor conflicts nor human nature nor greed nor war can’t connect the points.
The west is playing weak, and coy and Russia is bold and brut. Now who is fooling whom? Russians are living in war for now two years. They must love it. Everything is fine. We in the west complain about inflation, immigration and recession. Everything that impact us is nothing compared with real air raids, real destruction, real casualties, real disruption of civilian lives. Can you imagine not regular seeing your wife and children? Everything is disrupted and will not get in normal order for any time new. Mean team the total casualties reaching 1 million in this war (How horrible!) no horrible is that nobody cares. So I want to be clear of course all Ukrainians do care. I think even the Russians do care even when they say stupid things to keep on fighting. But I believe all of them do grieve. But the rest of the world doesn’t grieve. I am loosing my sleep and trust me it is freaking depressing to live with the fallout of WW2 and through the Cold War to see this Ukraine war unfolding.
It hurts me, it bothers me, it disturbs me … I have clear allegiance and I support the right of self defense, self determination of the Ukrainian people. On the same time I call this a war conducted by, on behalf of and for the pure delusion of the Russian people. Sorry I will not let you of this guilt trip. You and only you (aka the Russian people) can end this hostility, this war, this madness. Sorry that you are mislead, but it is your conscience your meanness, your aggression, your values (good or bad - your judgment) you determine how you want to live. If it is too cold move out of Russia. If you have other problems- solve your problems. We the rest of the world say NO to your way of living. We don’t care about your culture, your values, your language, your ideas, your anything …. Time you learn to play nice with everyone else and get your mind straightened out WW2 is over. No matter how often you are re-enacting your old glory - you are just drunk and nobody cares no more after the carnage you have done after 4 wars (2 Chechnya wars, 1 Georgia war, and now your Ukraine war) we know what you are doing and you just solve the problem by reduce your population for us. You can’t manage the vastness of your land. Now you have less people and you want to do more with less people. Remember you will have soon killed one million of your sons. Good choice and well done. When are you notice that you fight yourself not even starting to mess with the evil west. That is total insanity in my eyes and I really do you a favor to open your eyes - you are not at war with us - yet. You will face us at a time when your military is cut to size to match us in numbers but you will have lost so much on the way, that you will have a partisan warfare on your hand in which we hunt everything that is Russian, not because we are mean, because we don’t care to differentiate between good or bad Russians. How could we with you silently standing by and let this madness happen and continue.

Questions we want to ask ourselves are; would the UK be happy with a Russian military base in northern Ireland affiliated with IRA guns aimed at London? Would USA be happy with a military base in Cuba guns aimed at New York and Washington? Does Cuban missile crisis not educate us on how these things play out?
Since the military operation started, we can clearly see the American led western ambitions to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian with hopes of bleeding Russia.
None of the "western led humanitarian justice organisations" will encourage peace negotiations but spread Russian hatered. When did we allow western minority to make decisions on behalf of whole mankind?
Boris Johnson visited Ukraine three times just to break up the peace negotiations. Spends billions of pounds worth of weapons, training, and funding while it was just in 2006 that UK finished paying for WW2 aid. Zelenskyy visits White House, house of commons, European parliaments, and does not miss a single opportunity to address a public gathering, does he? Who has authorised him with so much screen time?

    • @shaneb315
      @shaneb315 5 месяцев назад +1

Boris did not break up peace negotiations , as Putin's mind was already made up to invade with his forces in place on the Ukrainian border during the UK Prime Minister's visits to Kyiv . Ukraine was never going to accept Russian terms whereby the Russians would invade and occupy most of Ukraine in an armed take over of their sovereign territory and that Zelensky stand down as president with a pro Russian puppet to take his place . One thing people like yourself do not understand is that Ukrainian's do not want to be Russian's and ruled from Moscow under an authoritarian regime ( just like Soviet times ) , with the vast majority preferring western alignment - EU membership and closer ties with NATO . Boris went to Kyiv , not to stop peace negotiations , but to arrange weapons to be shipped into Ukraine such as NLAWS , which ultimately were extremely effective in aiding the defeat and subsequent withdrawal of Russian forces from the northern regions of Ukraine . Yes many lives could have been saved had Ukrainian's put down their weapons and "welcomed" the Russians , but they did not do that as Ukrainian's fully understood what Russian occupation would mean to their Ukrainian culture and language etc - eradication ! Just like what Stalin tried to do .
What Putin did not count on by conducting his SMO is that both Ukrainian speaking Ukrainian's and Russian speaking Ukrainian's have unified to defend their homeland against it's bullying neighbour . Ukraine needed to stand up to Russia and it's geopolitical , imperialist intentions of placing itself front and centre to a new world order . Russia cannot be allowed to succeed in Ukraine , the price of failure if the west buckles at the knees is more Russian influence deeper into Europe and instability that will lead to a much bigger war . Is that what you want ?

Does the sea blame the sand for expansionism when the tide goes out? Due to economic, religious, media and sexual oppression the Soviet empire has been shrinking for decades, this is its final implosion. NATO simply allows people to join who want freedom from the Kremlin's dictatorial rule.

This is an interesting comment. It suggests that NATO, the West in general want to invade Russia. The West runs on various forms of a free market economy, apart from all the legal, moral and humanitarian reasons the West would not invade Russia, there is nothing in Russia the West needs or wants that cannot be traded elsewhere. Russian corruption as well as the Russian 'brain-drain' has left that nation incapable of designing and manufacturing anything useful. The West doesn't hate Russians, the West doesn't hate Russia however the West may dislike the russian-mafia that is currently running the country. I for one would love to see Russia become a truly free, democratic and ethical nation that would welcome trade and visitors, that was my vision when the wall came down and still is, I hope I live long enough to see that happen.

If Ukraine were to be accepted into NATO, it would not matter if Trump gets back in power, as he would ignore NATO Article 5: "An attack on one is an attack on all", and he would not engage U.S. forces in defending Ukraine. Even if Ukraine was not in NATO and Putin won in Ukraine and invaded Estonia (a NATO country) for example, Trump will still ignore Article 5. These are not just my opinions, many EU leaders are thinking the same thing. A NATO without the U.S. is a much weaker animal and Putin is well aware of this.

Peter talks like a warlord. Truth to be told, Ukraine is losing and will lose even with any form of NATO Support. Western Hegemony is diminishing!

Ukraine may be losing but the West isn't trying very hard. With full NATO backing it is Russia that would lose. Western power is still the main force in the world and will remain so unless Russia goes nuclear and we all die.
