Absolutely mesmerizing even though I wasn’t sure at times what was going on. Such splendid fabrics and costumes. Wish I could have attended the show and all the rehearsals.

Reading a translation the Tale of Genji is a trip, I highly recommend it, and I also recommend reading the diary of Sei Shonagon. Very captivating and surprisingly relatable even though it's a millennium old.

Wonderful piece. I love the mesmerizing music of kabuki and noh..... But what? At minute 26 Iit seems to me that the female voice is singing with the harpsichord something baroque_like (Monteverdi, I guess) in italian (my language) about the sorrow of love. Is it possible?!?

There is tons of applause at Kabuki performances in Japan. When actors first enter, when they do mie poses, when they complete an especially skillful bit, when they exit, etc. I have seen this countless times in the Kabukiza, Minamiza, and Hakataza Kabuki theaters, as well as the National Theatre. Beyond Kabuki, Japanese applaud at the same frequency at the same sorts of occasions as Westerners. We need to be careful about spreading uninformed cultural stereotypes.

I saw this live at Kabuki-za. It was astounding! I’m so glad we can see it on RUclips. Thank you so much!

Where we can get an English translated copy?

Wow, haha, found another treasure on youtube! Thanks for this!
It is BEAUTIFUL.... I love The KABUKI's...
Impressed .... thank you so much!!!!
the music is enchanting
20:30 an Italian opera singer?! wow
Me too!
Wow! It's an aria from l'Orfeo by Monteverdi.
Ohhh... I loved KABUKI... Beautifully awesome...
A play mixed with kabuki and noh? I LOVE IT!
And the addition of western music and singing. Fantastic.
The harpsichord kinda caught me off guard.
Agreed! Same with the singing, like it switched tones to that so fast it confused me for a sec

I wish it was translated or at least commentary of what is going on.. kabuki is so interesting!
Literally the first seven minutes is just Murasaki talking. Kind of like an autobiographical intro
Have you ever acknowledge...how long it must have have to remember ALL THOSE LINES?
And you can’t mess up, there’s no retakes if you do.

Awesome, thank you!
Amazing sub 👌😍🙌
Absolutely stunning, just wish there were some subtitles.

Yes it's an heian poem, in that period literature was quite the hobby of many noble women

What's the point of the western early music here?
To express emotions of love and sorrow, I think.
I'm guessing by all the clapping that this wasn't filmed in japan.
Why? Kabuki tends to have some audience interaction.

look at the zamon on the lantern 57:30, this is in Tokyo kabukiza
I guess the reaction is different because this is different from the usual kabuki

@@andgalactus1this doesn’t seem to be an actual Kabuki play. It looks like a modern play that’s incorporated some Opera singing, Kabuki and Noh dance.
