This puts me into study mode and helps hold me there, something I struggle with. Other brown noise can have too much in the higher range - I love how deep and warm this is. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this! Listen intently. You're in a crew of 10 guys You're early twenties. You are sitting on tons of bombs and ammo. It's unbelievably cold. In hours you will release the bombs. You might not come back or may be wounded. You might lose a friend today as you watch his plane go down. Planes will attack you soon Flak will hit your plane . You do this for 25 missions, if you live that long . NOW take a minute to think about that. Now, you know why they are called "THE GREATEST GENERATION" God Bless Them All. Never forget them!

Thank you for this. My Dad was a bombardier on Forts with the 15th AAF. He was a 2 year Army vet Signal Corps when Pearl Harbor happened. He was a Sergeant but wanted to be a pilot fly. He scored highly on the tests and was trained as a bombardier. He was "the old guy" on the crews at 24. He was wounded by flack over Linz, Austria attacking Nazi ball bearing factories. He flew 32 missions in all, 2 DFCs and 3 Air Medals among a few more. But he made it home. He is still my Hero as are all B-17 Boys. This makes me feel close to him although he is still flying high above with his crews and buddies somewhere in the wild, blue yonder. God bless all of the Greatest Generation.

Resonance is a thing. When I started my multi engine training my old school instructor was awesome. Taught me to sync with my ears and not the gauges. Just gets annoying on the ground when you've got a crosswind and you just have to put up with the out of sync resonance.

When I was four years old my
    father was Commander of Albrook
AFB in Panama. We were moving
    back to America from Guatemala
City Airport and flew out on a DC-3. I
slept near the wing section and
could hear the engine clearly. It
    was a tremendously comforting
    feeling that I still remember
    distinctly sixty six years later.
To this day I still sleep better
with sounds like this in the
    background. I also met Charles
Lindberg on that fight but that is
another story. Thank you for this !

Was born in the Canal Zone. Then we moved to Venezuela. My dad turned 30 exactly 2 weeks after 12/7/41. He was a major in the Army Corp of Engineers. They won’t let him transfer to the combat engineers. He even tried switching to the Navy’s Seabees. I popped out 10 years later minus a month. 🇺🇸 Flying home to the states in 2 engine props seemed like days. That drone put me to sleep for most of the trip, even when we had to fly through storms…according to my mom.

I’m also a private pilot and I’ve flown in a B17 as a passenger; the actual sound I recall was a bit rougher and louder, but very similar. Possibly because we were at low altitude. What a wonderful idea this is. It reminds me of long ago, lying in bed sometime around midnight there used to be a regular flight went overhead, turboprop, very high, probably cargo. I'd listen to the sound, softened by distance in the stillness for several minutes, fading slowly away. I always found it very soothing.

When I was 5 or 6 (mid-1960s) there were several late-night flyovers of our house by what had to be a squadron or more of prop planes, whether transports or bombers I never knew. It would start as a low rumble, gradually get louder, until climaxing with maybe two minutes of planes flying directly overhead. Then they would fade away. My older brother - sleeping in the bunk above me - has no recollection of this.

Love the comments. You ever noticed that no one's dad, grandfather, or great grandfather was ever a cook, admin/personnel, laundry, supply, maintenance, medical, intel, public affairs, welder, parachute rigger, dispersement clerk, postal clerk, aircrew, mechanic, driver, chaplin, buolder, IT, recruiter, career counselor, photographer, military police, mineman, fire fighters, legal/JAG, musician, quatermaster, ordinance, which is 90% of all military personnel. Suppose the only ones who comment must have been decendents of pilots, infantry at significant battles, and special forces. Intersting, I must ponder.

my father-in-law was a navigator on a B-17 in WW2 Europe. He remembered it being bitter cold at 20,000 feet, noisy as hell, a bucket for a toilet for the crew of 10,, and some 10 hours in the air for each mission - and a high risk of not making it back. His plane was shot down on its `13th mission. The average was 11 missions for a heavy bomber. He hated war the remainder of his life!

    • @JN24185
      @JN24185 5 месяцев назад +6

If you don’t mind me asking, where was he shot down? My grandfather was also a B17 Co-pilot and was shot down over Germany on what I believe was his 13th mission as well, in fact, they were not even supposed to go, they were the trail plane that filled in if any plane dropped out of formation due to engine issues. And sure enough, one did. Anyway, it would be wild if both our grandfathers were on the same flight. If this sounds familiar comment back and I’ll share a way to contact me. I have my grandfathers memoirs he wrote about the war before he passed. He never spoke of it until he wrote them. Take care!

My great uncle did a RAAF tour on Lancasters of 30 or so raids, was given a few weeks off and visited the Squadron but there weren't many familiar faces according to a letter he sent home. He was killed flying a Halifax over Denmark doing meteorology survey. An unknown but dangerous job where they flew modified bombers over the North Sea and Europe taking weather readings for the meteorologists to make a forecast for the Allied crews going to bomb the following day and night.

Every night I look for some sound to calm my brain. Starship bedroom, light rain and thunder, blizzards and even a ship caught in ice. And then I find this. A sleeping bag full of droning bees and Tibetan throat singers. And it’s just what my brain didn’t know it needed. Thank you for this. It works great.

I worked as a ramp agent for American Airlines at JFK NYC years back. Whenever i was assigned to an AA gate near the "America Eagle" (regional props flights) tarmac area, I was instantly numbed and put to sleep by the prop noise while sitting idle on my tractor awaiting my flight or assignment. Eagle prop flights usually kept one engine running as they boarded or disembarked a plane. Now instead of my AA tractor, Im off to my cozy bed with the hum of these props. Night all.

South America. Cargo flight at night. Big cockpit windows. Dark low mountains below, the occasional bluish gleam of small snow caps here and there under the sliver of moonlight hanging high overhead. So many stars. Warm air blowing on the legs from the heater vent. A little condensation at the seams where the glass meets the cold metal frame, idly doodling in it with a finger. Engines droning secret incantations, waving propellers like magic sticks to carry us aloft. Tiny clusters of village lights sliding slowly underneath. Several hours to go. Gentle bumping and rocking. Somebody else is the pilot. Maybe a little snooze then.
    Lovely.

The last few lights scattered along the coast disappear beneath the black hulk of our left wing. Ahead is the infinite void of The English Channel. We dropped the last of our load an hour ago. That pink smudge on the horizon behind us? That’s where Hamburg used to be. I settle back and pluck a crumpled pack of Luckys from my flight jacket. Two left. One now, and then one during de-briefing. I snap shut my Zippo and wonder how Baxter is doing. Baxter is my Golden Retriever. He’s a year old now and I haven’t seen him since my eighteenth birthday. Susie? I’m due for a letter, and I can’t say it doesn’t worry me some, you know, not having heard from her.
