these look lovely! I went on a class for making rag rugs over here, they were made by pulling strips of fabric through a canvas, different method, but also looks good when finished. You do realise, that the video you did ages ago, where you were crocheting a scarf, got me to finally learn how to crochet! I followed a lesson on RUclips, as I was never shown how to crochet as a child, and sadly, Mum was going to teach me, but she died young. I am very proud of the blanket on the back of my sofa which I made! Thanks Amy! xxx
Amy you are a good practical teacher. I enjoyed watching and learning from you. I love the look of your rugs and the variety of color. Good Job Frugal Mommy!!!
This brings back fond memories. My grandma made braided rugs out of old woolen clothing. We had them in our house growing up. I've often wished I still had one. Miss her so much.
Good for you Amy. Even in times of struggle we need to remember the ones we love and keep joy in our lives. You've remined me of all the crocheting projects I've done thanks to my late, wonderful Mom. Like you are doing, she brought joy no matter the season of life. She made many, many Barbie doll outfits from crochet and taught me to make purses, round drawstring or oval clutches, she was excellent in her crochet work and taught me the same discipline. I truly love the rag basket, It would look amazing sitting on any hearth or under a shelf holding blankets or wraps (which we also can crochet!). Thank you, Amy, you're a good soul, you are lovely and you are appreciated. xx
Love this video! Your instructions are fabulous for those of us who have never done this before. I plan on trying to make one for Christmas as present for niece and her new house, wish me luck and I may even post a pic when done! Love your channel Amy and all the diversity ❤️
Carol here. Have you asked your thrift stores if they have unwearable clothing that they are throwing out or selling as rags? Some of our stores here in Evansville IN do for people who do quilting of other patchwork craft. They also use it material for braided rugs. You may find some cheaper material this way.
the news reports couples who work are loosing 6,800$ a year under this current inflationary time. thats alot of monies out the window. i am amazed at u Amy. u are gardening like a farmer. its amazing.its inspired me. u are canning. u are now crocheting ! wow. and prepping. what a great and amazing lady. as if dumpster diving wasnt enough! u now have cool videos on all this super cool stuff. loving this.
My grandmother used to make these in the 60s and 70s . She used to use old t-shirts so when she cut them it was one continuous piece and they were used in the house . Them she would make ones out of bread packets for the bathroom and outside of the front door. Watching you make these you bought memories of my grandmother back that passed away in 1989. Thanks for the memories. Amy you must be a busy little bee at the moment .❤❤❤
Great job, Amy. Very pretty rugs and excellent instructions for newbies! I love the tote bag you made...especially for carrying kitties! :-) Thanks for taking the time to show us how simple it is to make useful things with recycled fabrics. :-D
My mom and I did this with plastic (bread bags) to have square / rectangle outside porch rugs. At 8 yrs old I thought it was a cool way to recycle. I gave to my teacher. She loved it and asked me for 2 more! My Mom was happy to help. Then teacher also had class try it out with finger crochet as class project for recycle fair. We got 2nd place is contest. My Mom laughed when I told her. 🤭
Those came out great. With dumpster diving thrift shops, you will have an endless supply of material. I heard Old Navy slices up the clothing they toss out. I remember the rag braiding kits back in the 70's. Lots of fun. Good way to keep old clothes out of the trash. Good sharp scissors help. You can always dye the cloth to get the colors you want.
Truly.mezmerizing!!! I loved watching this! It so reminded me of my mom! She would make dishcloths out of her small type yarn. Give them as Christmas gifts. I have all of them but 2 even now!
Fancy you coming into Australia in the early evening, you must be up late or very early, it's cold down here, can you please send me a bit of sunshine? - love the rugs... Cool 😮
Very creative. I wish i know how do that. I know how to make blankets cutting squares and sewing them together and putting a backing on and i make pillows. I have made lots for my kiddos and my 2 fur baby's throw the years. Thanks for sharing
This takes me back. I remember when all of our rugs were made this way. Sometimes, a chain was made and the chain rows hand sewn together. I prefer your way.
Yes, there is also a way of doing braided rugs where you have to sew and way you don't. I like to sew, but if I can avoid it when putting a rug together, I'll take the no sew method!
Amy, your rugs are beautiful! What a great way to repurpose old clothing. I have been saving old blue jeans in hopes of making a rug and you have inspired me to get started...but as you expressed, the cutting of the strips is the biggest pain in the project. Thank you for showing us how to join the ends. Love the crocheted basket, how cute... and kitty is very happy with it too😻. Have a wonderful Thursday!❤
I proudly decend from " The Rag Man" and I think you're doing GREAT!! Not sure about Princeton, but a lot of smaller thrift stores give away the clothing that's " rags", bigger places sell by the pound. England has a " Save The Textiles" movement to keep fabrics from landfills.
I had to stop crocheting due to arthritis and carpal tunnel but I may be able to manage this! Don’t worry about your nails- mine look the same- I can’t do a thing with gloves on. I just call them my summer hands🤣
So glad you gave the demo. I have made rugs from jeans which yield a very heavy rug that can be vacuumed. I have also made plastic rugs for our garage floor by crocheting plastic bags.
This is the best crocheting tutorial I have ever seen. I might just get big yarn and a big hook and follow you because it is easy to see what you're doing and why. 😊 THANKS 😊
This is the first time I’ve ever been able to understand crocheting. I knit but never understood this. You’re a great teacher and a great woman too. You work incredibly hard and I love what you do. Thank you, Amy. ❤❤
You are so GOOD at teaching beginners! I have seen other instructional videos, and the instructions are never as complete with so many examples. Beginners really do need this much explanation and examples! And I love the kitty interruptions, just as much!
Thank you so much for taking it slow to teach us. I've wanted to do this for a long time and wasn't sure how to do it. I'm going to get busy and get started on a rug!!!!! I love your videos!!!!!
I like that there is no sewing of braids….crochet and done!! Thanks Amy for showing us this….and I love the colors in the rugs you’re working on!! 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
I like this. I'm a crafter I've never done that. I don't no how to crochet. I will try that. I make blankets & misc. I love you doing this. I sew & quilt . Keep on doing stuff..
When you cut your fabric cut out a big square of it and then cut one way up your fabric but do not cut all the way to the end (about a half inch from the end)then turn your square around and cut back toward the other end again about a half inch from the end but not all the way threw. Turn and cut until you get to the end of the big block . You will not have to join them together with the hole so much. It is a big time saver. Also if you do not want to go around you can do straight across and do large rectangle ones they are easier as you do not have to go around the corners . You did a great job on this video.
Had an art project in college similar to these, except mine were smaller and made like tubes, looks like sea creatures. It’s lovely but each one took 20+ hours to make and I made 3, still worth it!
Omgosh! I set myself a goal of learning to crochet this summer. I watched videos on line but could not seem to get it quite right. I’m going to watch your video as many times as it takes because you did a great job showing how to do this. I’m so excited.
So nice rugs! I've done this years ago, but a round one. Oval is nicer. I love crochet, learnd it through RUclips! This would make a nice gift to my sister. 🙌🙌
First time I see your turtorial and at the beginning I d put on3 stitch in one hold if needed also the other I put my crochet in one stitch not the both . So now learned again thanks sharing and also the you explained it , I like it . This tutorial was made a year ago and you they re still people are looking . I looked at so many and still learn . I’m just starting ….. thanks again 😊
Way back in the 90s I made rag rugs with my friend who taught us in my coworkers were in town. She told us how to tell the edges of a sheet and so them so that I had to do a slip and tear and make a ball. I’ve made mini mini rugs and I love doing it I just need to do it
My grandmother used to make rugs like that , and I still have two. They are over 50 years old, and are packed away for now. One is made from my old jeans and drapery fabric, the other made from old sheets . I have her hand carved wooden crochet hook
I love crocheting. My joints hurt and i tire and fall asleep from fibromyalgia. I made a queen sized Afghan for our bed. I love your designs for the rag rugs. I’m going to try to make for Xmas gifts too!
Thanks Amy, that's the BEST tutorial! I tried to do this years ago but couldn't find a tutorial that made sense, my rug turned out sloppy and too loose. Your teaching skills are wonderful!! I'm so busy that I'm really far behind in videos, so definitely no time to make a rug now...but come winter I'll be putting your lesson into action! Your rugs look GREAT, thanks for sharing!!
Awesome ideas and thank you for the inspiration and instruction! Handmade gifts are always from the heart and I have always greatly appreciated them. I am sure the recipients will love them. Take care, be safe and healthy.
I love this I have old clothes jeans I want to make a blanket or quilt as I think this winter will be very cold thanks for showing how to join the stripes of fabric 😁
You are such a good teacher and explain things to where they seem so easy. You are easy to follow and to listen to. Thank-You for yet another lesson on things you have accomplished. Your rugs are going to look great when you are finished. I love the basket too, it's so cute.
I love making these rugs. I can't throw anything away, my family thinks I'm a hoarder, but I try to repurpose everything so am currently working on one that at the present time is 4 foot by 5 foot.
Wow you're such a great teacher. My mom tried to teach me how to start a blanket I learned.after a.long while . I think if she would of showed me the way you just did I would of got much faster lol 😆. Stay safe God Bless
Thank you!! That was very interesting!! I mean that in the best way!! I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to make a rug!! To tell you the truth I didn't even notice your fingernails LOL God bless!!

I might have used the rag rug I made oh so many decades ago if I hadn't had to go back and stitch the long braided pieces together. In the end, I couldn't stand to look at it to put it on the floor. This looks much quicker.
Amy, do you know how many of us women are sitting here going omg, I could do that. I've been trying to find covers for my arms on my chairs. I'm going to take all the old blouse's I was going to give away, and cut them into strips and make my own chair covers. I couldn't find any in the store anyway so this is a brilliant idea. thank you so much.
We had an elderly neighbor that would crochet bread sacks. She would cut the bread sack down each side and have a long strip of plastic to work with. They lasted forever. She would sell them to all the people in the neighborhood. Thats where i learned to crochet.
Great instructions Amy, i make peggy rugs and even though i crochet i haven't made a rug you have inspired and encouraged me to make a start, thankyou for the clear instructions.
I crochet and love it but it takes time and i find it sooo relaxing. But this vid just helped me decide what to do with all those cut clothes i find at old navy dumpster ALL the time...

Amy you are a good practical teacher. I enjoyed watching and learning from you. I love the look of your rugs and the variety of color. Good Job Frugal Mommy!!!
I totally agree they look great 🏴🏴
My grandma used to make these rugs out of bread bags. Loved this video.❤️
This brings back fond memories. My grandma made braided rugs out of old woolen clothing. We had them in our house growing up. I've often wished I still had one. Miss her so much.
I still have my Granny’s and l love them!!
My grandma too. She was fabulous, nobody is like a grandma ❤️we had the wool rugs, they were beautiful

I was going to say the same thing about t-shirts. It is fast and easy, just gently pull the “ yarn” and it rolls in on itself. No raveling,
Great job, Amy. Very pretty rugs and excellent instructions for newbies! I love the tote bag you made...especially for carrying kitties! :-) Thanks for taking the time to show us how simple it is to make useful things with recycled fabrics. :-D

Use a rotary cutter. You sometimes find them at Dollar tree in the craft section. I have also used multiple yarns to make them.
I used a p or k hooks. When you use use yarn use worsted weight and used 5 skines at a time.
Very creative. I wish i know how do that. I know how to make blankets cutting squares and sewing them together and putting a backing on and i make pillows. I have made lots for my kiddos and my 2 fur baby's throw the years. Thanks for sharing
Amy your so cute and smart. You can go all kinds of nice things. Bless you all. 💟☀️👍

We had a family friend who made several of these rugs back in the 60s. She also made rugs with bread plastic bags. They turned out so great.
No Brasil si fazer muito e usar também um abraço amiga
My neighbor did that too with the bread sacks!
Amy, your rugs are beautiful! What a great way to repurpose old clothing. I have denim strips too. But I need jeans of different shades. I have a lot of really dark blue strips but need more faded jeans.
Blue jeans are hard to deal with.
I proudly decend from " The Rag Man" and I think you're doing GREAT!!

Yeah, I also garden bare foot or with flip flops on so you should see the bottoms of my summer feet!
I made a few of those rugs out of sheets, curtains and jeans. Love the basket!
That's pretty cool! I have now an idea what to do with old clothes. 👍
Awesome, thx for sharing Amy! 🙂
Well done! My Grandfather made Rag Rugs many years ago. As my father would say.. ‘ Old trends come back around’. Very true.
So glad you gave the demo. I have made rugs from jeans which yield a very heavy rug that can be vacuumed. I have also made plastic rugs for our garage floor by crocheting plastic bags.

You are the BEST teacher! So patient and concise. I would LOVE to make these for Christmas presents 🎁
It’s is great to see that you are more than a dumpster diving family. You garden, crochet and many other things in a frugal way.
You are so GOOD at teaching beginners! I have seen other instructional videos, and the instructions are never as complete with so many examples. Beginners really do need this much explanation and examples! And I love the kitty interruptions, just as much!
Is there anything you can't turn your hand to? I love the rugs and I think I'll give it a go 😀😀😀
Excellent job, I’ve never seen it done like that before, so thank you for teaching me. Take care and thank you for sharing 👍👏❤️
Kitten Totes! I love it :-)
Thank you so much for taking it slow to teach us. I've wanted to do this for a long time and wasn't sure how to do it. I'm going to get busy and get started on a rug!!!!!

Now I'm going to crochet. My mom was a wonderful at crocheting. I have beautiful afghans from her 💕

Excellent demonstration, even I think I could make a rug ...if I had the motivation to make anything.
I do love the variety of colors you used.
Had an art project in college similar to these, except mine were smaller and made like tubes, looks like sea creatures. It’s lovely but each one took 20+ hours to make and I made 3, still worth it!

I love that basket Amy! Ty for great video!💞🤗

I love making these rugs. I can't throw anything away, my family thinks I'm a hoarder, but I try to repurpose everything so am currently working on one that at the present time is 4 foot by 5 foot.
Amazing!!!
Very, very cool & inspiring!! Can't wait to try it!

Wonderful!
Even though ❤️ I've been crocheting 🧶, since I was 17,love how you explain how to 🤗🌻🦋.

These are SO nice!! Thank you for showing how to do it! If you have a Goodwill depot outlet that sells clothing by the pound, you can get piles of men’s shirts like this for a buck. There probably is one in Jersey, maybe the Belmawr one. Or closer.
My grandma used to make rugs out of bread bags like that she would cut them sew them together and make giant balls out of the strips when she thought she had enough and made the rugs and sold them they were great for outside rugs for like for front or back doors.
I might have used the rag rug I made oh so many decades ago if I hadn't had to go back and stitch the long braided pieces together. In the end, I couldn't stand to look at it to put it on the floor. This looks much quicker.
Love the rugs, you explained it all so well. How very multi talented! Thanks for all you videos they make my day !
Beautiful rugs. Good instruction video as well.
I love receive homemade gifts from people, because they have spent and given up their time to make the gift, 100 times better than a shop bought gift.
Thanks your a wonderful teacher .never so easy with you .know how to crochet but need to know how to make this rug .thank you so much.live you
Great explanation Amy to someone who has always struggled to understand crocheting! Good tutorial!💕💕💕
Thank you for explaining this. Loved it
I crochet and love it but it takes time and i find it sooo relaxing. But this vid just helped me decide what to do with all those cut clothes i find at old navy dumpster ALL the time...
Thank you for this video.
Bought 2 of these at a craft fair many years ago & love them!
Thank you for your version which is the one I wanted the old fashion way not perfect but beautiful.
I tried making the braided rag rug . I really messed up on attaching . You made it look simple I think I will try your way .
Great job ! I bet old table clothes would work well too.
