  • Journey to Savannah, Georgia with #1stLookTV guest host and RUclips sensation Phil Calvert, (aka Phil the Culture), to explore the city’s picturesque beauty, rich history, savory food scene…and yes, a real-life haunted house with the local paranormal society. 👻 🎊
The travel episode kicks off with Phil meeting up with Mayor Van Johnson, along with Paranormal Society of Savannah members Patrick Welsh and 'Walking Dead' actor Mark McCullough to get the lowdown on the city's rich - and spooky! -history. We get to investigate the “terrifying” haunted house that Mark grew up in during childhood and learn about the history behind it! Shortly after, Patrick shows us how we can calculate whether there are spirits near or not simply based on the temperature of the room. (Don’t miss out on Phil making a run for it after using Patrick’s nifty device!)
Next, Phil joins Sue Else (CEO of Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia), Michele "Sparkie Edwards (Assistant Director of Program, Life Skills Focused), and Taylor R. (First Headquarters Program Aide, Girl Scout Ambassador) to see if he's tough enough to hang with the Girl Scouts at the organization's birthplace. Phil shows off how he is “man enough to be a girl scout” by joining some of the girls in their daily activities where they learn specific skill sets such as archery, kayaking, and learning the history behind the famous girl scout cookie business. He takes a stroll with Taylor to find out the story and intentions when selling girl scout cookies and why these components are crucial to upcoming women’s growth and development. Lastly, he takes a bridge walk with all the girls congratulating them onto moving up to the next level in their girl scout career and leaving them with inspirational advice that these girls will never forget!
After that, Phil interviews Thurmond Tillman (a pastor at the First African Baptist Church), as well as Hanif Haynes and Abraham Famble (both community members of Pin Point, Georgia), to learn about how Black history is celebrated in a city with a checkered past regarding this subject. We take a trip to the first African Baptist Church, we learn how worship played a vital role in the fabric of Georgia's history, bringing a light of safe haven for the enslaved members of the congregation. Phil also learns more about African traditions in the local area and how many of these are still kept alive to this day, from language to culinary delights.
When you go to Savannah, you expect to find Southern staples when it comes to food, but new flavors are emerging as traditional meets progression. Phil links up with Marsha Wilkes Thompson (owner of Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room), Elena Hugley (general manager at La Scala), and La Scala co-owners Jeffrey Downey and Donald Lubowicki to chat about the city’s popular restaurant scene…and to enjoy a (literal) taste of it. From old-fashioned family style cuisine of the South to a unique Savannah take on typical Italian food, Phil experiences a wide range of food right in the heart of this beautiful U.S. state.
