Juan Gabriel lived on the streets and was arrested unjustly accused of stealing food. After spending 1 and a half years in prison, the jailer who had heard him sing introduced him to a famous actress, and this legend began. Proof that sometimes we need to go through very difficult situations to become something great.

This guy is the Mercury of Mexico. He was not just famous in Mexico, but in all the Spanish speaking world including the Hispanic community in the U.S. which comprises millions of followers. The reason I say he was like Mercury is because he created all his music and lyrics. When performing you never heard the same song as the original. Since he created the music, he twisted his music on stage as he pleased. He added and remove parts, and even invented lyrics during the performance. Each presentation was unique, never to be repeated.

One thing about popular Mexican artists is that a lot of their songs sound like really good party/dancing music, but when you actually listen or read the lyrics. It's just so emotionally driven and just sheer poetry of their soul because inserted in a song. You guys should totally check out more of his music and there's plenty of more hispanic/latino artist like him to find too!

Juan Gabriel would be equivalent to Elvis. Pure legendary. Every song a hit. Loved by people who mocked him openly for being gay but yet bought his music. A beautiful man of very humble beginnings and never forgot who feeds him. He loved his public. I love him. Every song a hit. Loved and performed up to the age when he died. My regret in life almost above all is, not seeing him perform. I do his songs in karaoke.
    I miss him.

This man is a legend. No one compares to him. He is one of the most respected Latino artist of all time. He is the pride of Mexico. He is called "El Divo de Juarez", sometimes affectionately called "Juanga". He is a singer-songwriter, actor, and composer. All his songs were guaranteed hits. He wrote songs for anybody that was anybody in the Latino industry. Every singer wanted to do a duet with him. He was very gracious, flamboyant, and charismatic. Unfortunately, he passed away, not so long ago. I love him! His songs were diverse. He sang upbeat and slow songs. Everyone loved him. He would give up and coming singers an opportunity. He was one of the constant singers from my childhood to my adulthood. He had a long career. A was a legend in his own lifetime.

IMO it's pretty hard to find an English equivalent of Juan Gabriel. His stage performance is essentially GOAT level, which would make one compare him to Elvis or MJ, but he also wrote an absurd amount of songs at a top top level. I would maybe compare him to somebody like Willie Nelson, if Nelson was also the most popular performer in his language for decades, and also much more prolific. Really, Juanga has no English equal IMO, and to find greater artists would require you to start looking into some of the classical composers of the past.

A master of story telling through song!! May he Rest In Peace. The men in the white suits are the mariachi’s. In this particular performance they are joined in with an orchestra. And Lexi, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard a banjo played in any Mexican music…I got a kick out of that…

If a banjo was included in any of his CD/albums it would have been this particular CD (el méxico que se nos fue) a good CD. i used to have it, along with maybe 10 or 11 other Juan Gabriel CDs...i used to have about 1,100 CDs, about 300 in Spanish, a few in French & Portuguese. I speak English only. Anyway, listen to the songs on this CD, there may be a banjo in one of them, maybe not. There is definitely a C&W hoedown American fiddle in a song or two.

    • @michaelmorris7451
      @michaelmorris7451 Год назад +1

Amor Eterno is a good song, but the best rendition was probably by Rocio Durcal.
As you know doubt know, she was born in Spain (an actress & singer there), but met Juan Gabriel in Mexico many years ago and ended up recording many CDs of songs written by him. She also recorded CDs of music by Roberto Livi (a very famous (to singers) Argentine composer, and Marco Antonio Solis & Joan Sebastian).
I saw Rocio Durcal in concert twice, once in October 1997 (Universal Amphitheater); It was her 53rd birthday when I saw her in 1997; they brought out a cake for her on the stage. I saw her again at Cox Arena (San Diego) in 2002; I think that she already had cancer by then.
Her two best audience responses from songs that night (October 1997) were for JG's Amor Eterno and Marco Antonio Solis' Como Tu Mujer, both of which were big hits on the radio for her. Both songs brought enthusiastic applause towards the beginning of when she started singing them and at the end of the songs.
She also got big audience responses for Vestida De Blanco & Como Han Pasado Los Años, both by Roberto Levi....and both great songs.

Rocio Durcal’s career was basically dead by the late 1980’s/ early 1990’s but Juan Gabriel revived it by writing songs specifically for her. Rocio Durcal’s version of Amor Eterno is very good but there is an emotion that Juan Gabriel projects that only he can when performing his songs. We all have different tastes. I prefer Juan Gabriel’s version but I play both versions because both singers sing it so awesome.

Juan Gabriel was an icon for the musical culture of Mexico, a prolific composer and a showman in every sense of the word. He broke the paradigms of society from the end of the 70s, because Mexican society has always been very macho and with his enormous talent mouths fell.
Regarding the comparison, I think that the Mexican and American markets are very different, and as Brad says, it is music that makes a sad moment something happy and that reflects a lot of the Mexican idiosyncrasy, where there are parties like the Day of the Dead.
I played in a play where music was used solely by Juan Gabriel and close friends of musicians who accompanied him live for years, they told me that he had so much repertoire that he used to perform in cities in the United States 3 days in a row and his true fans bought tickets for the 3 days because every day he sang a show with a different playlist.
I think that if they hadn't heard it before it's because, as Brad says, it's music in Spanish and I think that the Anglo market practically does NOT consume music in another language or at least not in Spanish, so it's as if it didn't exist, but it was an amazing artist.

  • @stevedahlberg8680
    @stevedahlberg8680 2 года назад +19

I had never heard of him either but I love it. I also like Los Tigres del Norte and also this guy, Javier Batiz, known mostly as a guitar player and teaching Carlos Santana to play but when he sings he really seems. You guys covered House of the Rising Sun by The Animals at one point, this is his cover of it and he just kills it.
It's in Spanish but then again it kind of frees your mind up to not have to worry about parsing every single lyric and just listen to it and the emotion. But because you've already heard House of the Rising Sun, which so many people have covered, you're already familiar with the story of someone whose father was a drunk and in the end they go back to New Orleans to wear that ball and chain.

I think Juan Gabriel and Vicente Fernandez are like the Michael Jacksons the Latin American community. They were icons and their music was loved by fans of different generations and genres. Even people who didn't speak Spanish themselves loved them because their parents loved them. Not only was Linda Ronstadt the biggest female rock ⭐ of the 70s but her all Spanish album went platinum in one day, in America. My favorite is Por Un Amor, oh, and also Volver Volver. The white doves at the end of the live video is unbelievable. She nailed it. I don't speak Spanish.

@pc She's Mexican American from Tuscan. She attributes her extraordinary vocal skills to singing Mexican folk songs growing up.

@pc She was only 18 when she arrived in LA, a fully formed vocal stylist, very smart and brave. She was my teenage celebrity crush.

Canciones De Mis Padres. i had three of her CDs in Spanish. My favorite song was Tu Solo Tu, a very old and famous song; Pedro infante also sang it and so did Selena (not Selena Gomez). The best version is by Selena (the singer who was murdered). It was, to me, Selena's best song. but all three of the singers i just referenced did a great job with it; just a fantastic song.
I don't speak Spanish either. I can stumble through something written in spanish, but i have gringo ears, so when people are speaking to me, it goes right over my head. I don't speak spanish, but love music in Spanish, in Portuguese, in French....... i don't speak piano or guitar, either but i also like those instruments.

Hello brad & Lexi I just watched your reaction to Juan Gabriel's Hasta Que Té Conoci it was a good reaction. I've watched a few reactions to this song and it always happens the reactors start off still and quiet and then boom before they know it they're dancing and smiling just really enjoying the performance. Juan Gabriel aka Juanga is truly an icon he was a composer, singer, song writer. He wrote more than 1,800 songs many of them for other artist. I hope you do more reactions of his music i.e his number 1 hit Amor Eterno which he composed for his mother after her passing. May he rest in peace. Thank you for reading my comment.

Elvis Presley was no doubt a bigger star world-wide at the height of his fame. No single singer has been as big as Elvis (the Beatles were as big, but that was 4 people).... Not Sinatra, not Michael J. nor Prince. You have to also take into consideration that the US & European population was much less when Elvis was at his height than it was when Michael Jackson was at his height.
But Elvis sang songs written by other people (some very good song writers). I am not sure if Elvis even wrote one song. He did sing many excellent songs (It's Now or Never), and a lot of crap in the later years of his career: Suspicious Minds and In the Ghetto (not to my liking), and he was in one stupid movie after another.
One big similarity between Elvis and JG is that they both gained a ton of weight as they aged.
Almost all songs that Juan Gabriel sang and recorded were written by JG, except, he did record "Adoro", an Armando Manzanero song.
Manzanero was also Mexican.......his songs were recorded by many Americans, including Elvis and Perry Coco......... If you know the Perry Como song "It's Impossible", then you are familiar with an Armando Manzanero melody......the song in Spanish has different lyrics (same melody), but was titled "Somos Novios"

He's considered the Elton John of Mexican and Latin America
His songs had tons of meaning emotions and pain at times but him being excentric, a showman he would turn all that darkness and put on a positive festive show for his crowd in attendance. He suffered a lot during his upbringing as a child. Read up on him and you'll discover what a true Mexican Gem he was and always will be. RIP Juan Gabriel.

the lyrics in english the song
    Until met you
    didn't know what sadness means,
I didn't know what tears mean,
These tears that make me cry,I didn't know
I knew only about affection, tenderness,
Because ever since I was little,
That's what my mother taught me,
That's what my mother taught me
    This and much more
    I never suffered
    I never cried
    I was so happy
    My life was great
    oh
My life was so different, something beautiful, divine
    Full of happiness
I knew only about joy, about the beauty of life,
I didn't know about loneliness, no
About loneliness and so many other things too
I never suffered, I never cried,
I was so happy....My life was great
    Chorus(x2)
    Until I...met you,
I started to see life with pain
I'm not lying you, I was happy,
Even though with so little love,
    And I realized too late,
    That I shouldn't have loved,
Because now I think only of you,28
    More than yesterday, much more
I never suffered, I never cried,
I was so happy... Until I met you
Now I want you to tell me
Whether it was worth or not the trouble
    Of meeting you
Because I don't believe you anymore
    And you were so bad
Yes, you were so bad with me
    That's why I never want
I never want to see you
Leave, leave, go... go away, I don't want you
I never want to see you
    Leave
