I've always thought these things were really neat. Can you print these on long sheets and roll them into tubes separately then turn the outer one of them. Or maybe the two layers in the shape of a conical lamp shade and somehow make one of them rotate.
This is totally amazing, love your work! :) The animations actually look quite like that of 1980s B&W low resolution 1 bit computer animated graphics too!
ah i see how it works. The vertical lines above cover up certain pixels except for the ones necessary for the specific frame, which you can design for the animation, and moving the slide covers and uncovers new pixels that project another image, the next frame.
This technique has a lot of potential for many different applications. Could this be used on a larger scale, like for billboard advertising? Bus stops wouldn't be so boring and static! Or you could print graphics onto auto sliding doors. When the two glass doors open and overlap their respective windows on either sides, it could show a spinning "Hi", or "We're Open", or "Sale" etc. I notice a lack of color clarity though. Could this technique show colors better? Like green stripes instead of black ones? Wow, so many things you could do with this.
The idea is really cool - but in reality I think an off the shelf component like a screen will be cheaper to build than this The black stripes just block out the other animation frames, so making them colourful won't affect how clearly you see the colour. It will always just be 1/5th of the colour (for a 5 frame animation) for the actual image, and any colouring of the bars will probably mostly confuse and make the exxect less good. Would be fun to experiment with printed/patterened forground though (even if it makes the background less visible, it could be a cool effect)
Yes, you have to print to a transparency. It can be a little difficult. If you have an ink jet, you need ink jet printable transparencies. Some print shops will print laser jet to transparencies but they don't always come out great. The heat from the printer kind of warps the transparency which will minimize the animation effect a bit.
So the way this works is that the lines on the paper were drawn in a specific way where the filter would pass over and separate the lines. Then the separate lines form an image while the other lines are blocked by the filter. Moving the filter changes the image as different lines are separated and so it makes it look animated.
This happens due to the perspective of the eye, it only sees one part due to our brain trying to fill in the parts, for a blind animal they see a static discoloured bright light, this is how old phones and movies worked, the similar thing happens in the old films, remeber the black tape? Yeah thats a black discolouration device that allowed it to move or it would be a animation like this---}😀😃😄😁😄😅 basically its a matter of view and colours, and yes i made this up don't get cocky
Interesting that this type of illusion also works on a cat’s visual system which is so highly attuned to motion. The cat reaching under made it seem as if it perceived movement behind the surface.

That's really fantastic! This method of optical illusion (the features) is known as Moiré patterns and is caused by optical interference in physics.

How do you make the template , you print the black stripes on a transparent sheet? (I don't know if my printer can do that XD)
Yes, you have to print to a transparency. It can be a little difficult. If you have an ink jet, you need ink jet printable transparencies.
