Feelin' Good (early & rare version) - Cy Grant feat. Bill LeSage 1965.wmv

- Written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse.
First performed by Negro & The Orchans in the 1964 British musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Smell Of The Crowd (Theatre Royal, Nottingham) with Cy Grant as The Negro and a young Elaine Paige as one of the Urchins. Their version was not recorded, but Grant sang it on his album Cy & I (World Record Club T451), probably predating Nina Simone's more famous cut. Thanks to Luc Goossens (audio) and www.originals.be (info).
The first recording of "Feeling Good" was likely by its co-author Anthony Newley on his RCA Victor album: "Who Can I Turn To and Other Songs from The Roar of Greasepaint" issued early January 1965 per Billboard.
i always have a high appreciation for the originals no matter if theres a newer better version or not. and this songs amazing! =) classic.
also within context of the musical it came from, "Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd" it has a particular relevance to the times!!
I just read that this recorded version was sung and performed a bit differently from Cy Grant's first performance in the stage musical.
Old is not the same as classic. Nina Sinone's version is better and is a classic. This one is just old. Just a white dude who sounds like every other white dude back then.
@@FelipePereiraSousa Too bad you don't know what you're talking about. The originator of the role of "The Negro", in *The Roar of the Greasepaint--The Smell of the Crowd* , where the song was first performed, and singer of this version, Cy Grant, was Guyanese.
I know everyone likes Nina's version better, but I like how calm and soothing the original is. A very relaxed way of feeling good, at peace with the rest of the world, a moment in the morning where the earth itself isn't totally awake yet
Nina simone is so fierce about it!!!
I still think in my mind Nina’s is the original.
AKA rn for me
Michael Buble kills it. This version is weird lol
this reminds me of Dick Van Dyke (or his italian cousin 👨🏻🦱) singing
This man doesn't need Backing!!
Given how many versions there are of this, it should be used as an intro for a tv show and a different version for every season like "Way Down in The Whole" was for The Wire.
Love this idea.
I remember him from 1950s British black and white TV singing calypso songs about topics on the news. He's got a lovely voice. I love the Nina Simone version, but this is the original.
Hi I would love to hear a few of your memories of him as trying to write about him, largely forgotten now.
Cy Grant and Nina Simone should have done a duet on this song! Love both versions way too much.
ok,, I will tell them! :p
if only Cy Grant and Michael Buble could duet this song . I'd be in Heaven ! love both version so much
Cy Grant he die in 2010 so its not posible :/
+Thien Thuan Tran Dont like Michael Bubles Version :/
It would probably be really bad...two different styles don’t usually go together..
A beautiful version for Feeling Good. Cudos to Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for writing such a beautiful song.
Do you know the version with Pat Bowie : sublime
...wow...my grandfather and this man and a dedicated few crashed in nieuw-vennep in 1943. I wish i would have had the chance to meet them all rip and awesome song!
Wow. I’ve sung this song for years. Only through googling did I just find a Wikipedia article where I learnt about this original version. Can’t believe it was British songwriting and a British Singer Cyril (Cy) Grant. Amazing.
Cy Grant is not British.
@@nyorafrancis Oh Cy Grant is Guyanese born, but I’d say he was British as he seemed to live in London.
@@andresaxmanbrown OK. Let's call him Guyanese British actor, musician, writer and poet. . .
@@nyorafrancis I think that's fair! Thanks for the education! :-)
@@nyorafrancis It was British Guiana at the time. My father also from that time sim age had British passports and easy naturalisation to uk.
I like Nina's version better. It wakes you up! You can hear soul, pain & flavor in it.
Me too!!! She really puts soul into it!
Yeah, a song called feelin' good should be really sad....
Come on its 1965 all songs sounds like this ..dont underestimate..nina just a copy cat
Carly Rose Sonenclar's version is a killer too ;)
@DrinkOmally I can't agree with that... It's just a different, lighter feel than more recent music. Depending on my moods, I might prefer listening to this than to some more recent version, and I'm 16 so its not nostalgia or anything...
everyone covers Nina Simone's cover of this song, which is probably why you think that Nina's version is the original, but this version is actually the original. Pretty weird that everyone's trying to redo her performance of it though, right? I mean, no one's ever going to be as good as Nina Simone, why not try re-adapting it as something new?
I agree with the part that says: "This is a song about discovering and experiencing freedom, having an epiphany." I absolutely love this original performance from the musical, so clean and authentic, great acting, really leaves you feeling good - calm, serene, tranquil - unagitated, in contrast to other versions.
This isn't the original.
This is NOT from the musical. This is an alternatv jazz version.
Incorrect song information. This version of the song has been published in 1965, not 1964, and is entitled 'Feelin' Good', not 'Feeling Good'. Please visit www.discogs.com/Cy-Grant-Featuring-Bill-Le-Sage-Cy-I/release/2523237 for reference.
The first 1964 on-stage performance of the song that you mention was not featuring Bill Le Sage and had probably different instrumentalisation for the purpose of a musical show.
Thus, the 1964 on-stage performance and this 1965 recording are two different song versions.
I've updated song title and year, your other remarks do not conflict with my info. Thanks.
+faulandin i would hate to see you correct a child. fucking loser
thank you for the upload btw waltervdbus
+conkker391 Jesus fucking christ need a fucking tampon? He pointed out the wrong information, without being rude at all.
well it isnt wrong anymore soo
no one cares about difficult stuffs
The rendition of this song by Angelina Jordan is also very good and her finish is spectacular!
Always respect for the originals!
Mr Newley and Mr Bricusee composed some gems. This has always been more than a pop song of which it is considered.
From a very clever musical.
Awesomely haunting.
i love the intruments used for this works so well with the song
Sweely sung, and yes it is the original, but imo without Nina's version it would have been forgotten and there would be no Buble/Muse covers.
try listening to Carly Rose Sonenclar's version.
aspenrebel I have done, and just did again. She's a talented singer.
Anthony Peters oh, you're awake at this hour, wherever in the world you are. Isn't the Net amazing? You watched Carly's Audition of "The X Factor USA 2012"? I've watched it many times. I still can't believe it. I still say that that was really a 43 year old black woman in a 13 year old white girl's suit!! hee hee hee.. I love how the black judge, L.A. Reid just went "WHAT!!!?".
She's amazing. I watched a short clip of her singing on Broadway in "Les Miserables". She's been in at least one other Broadway show, maybe more than one. She sang National Anthem at a NY Mets Baseball game (that's considered "making it").
If you search a bit, on RUclips here, there is one clip of all her performances on X Factor. The one of her singing at "Judge's House" (Britney was her mentor), was especially revealing. If you watch it, watch the other young kids in category watching her out the window and listening. At one point the camera goes on the face of a white blondish girl who looks depressed and dejected cuz Carly is so good singing. They knew from day one, that they didn't have a chance against her. Then watch her duet with Leann Rimes, where Leann Rimes messes up, messes up Carly, and tries to be the focus. Look of frustration on Carly's face. At 13 years old, she is a PRO!!! Now she is 15. She's going to be a force, probably mostly on Broadway, for the next 50 years!!!!
She's from outside of New York City, in Westchester County, somewhere.
It's great that you, someone, can appreciate raw talent.
+aspenrebel Thanks for the suggestion, I checked it too..She is really a telented girl. However I have to add if she uses the time spent for practicing trendy stage and mainly head movement for her voice to train, then she really would be nice. The performance does not fit the song me thinks.
Are you saying that Carly Rose's performance of "Feeling Good" does not fit the song? Or are you talking about another performance? Her performance of "Feeling Good", both at audition and in Final, took that song to a whole new place, a new level. It put the song right onto the stage!! Where it originally came from. I do not understand what your saying with the middle part you wrote. You did write it very well at all.
mm, it's such a great song, but I think what really made it special was nina simone's cover. the trumpets and other instruments, the aggressive rhythm, just made it more amazing :O
Love how subtle this version is - no belting, just pleasant and somewhat yearning.
😂blan
...No offence to this man, but I prefer Nina's version.
Don't worry man. Everyone does. But as always, hats off to the original brilliant writer.
Pues yo prefiero version de Muse ;)
Eagle me too
he's not the writer, Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse are the writers!.. this man is the 1st who performed it on a stage
YOU ALL SHOULD LISTEN TO THIS VERSION BY Carly Rose Sonenclar 13 YEARS OLD UNREAL
I really like this
The very first version I've heard of this song is Randy Crawford and Joe Sample's. It is simply amazing but a different version. When I first heard the original, I really got surprised. However, not like most of the people, I also do enjoy this version a lot along with the Buble's, Muse's, Randy&Joe's and of course Simone's.
Angelina Jordan at 10 yo is amazing sing this song.
chill....alot of songs around this era were covers..they're all amazingly differant...mr bojanglez original is just plain beauty...nina simone did a good job...but not as good a job....This one is good in a bent kind of way.....has a really cool attitude to it.....I just realized i have made no point here...so long sir!
É muito bom quando podemos apreciar o original, e ver que uma obra não é o fim em si mesma. São diversas interpretações, cada uma com sua singularidade. Mas a obra original, é a genesi de tudo. Sensacional.
Cy Grant was aircrew with RAF Bomber Command in WW2. Shot down, taken as a POW.
Became an actor and a singer. Later qualified as a barrister.
Wanna celebrate black British talent?
Celebrate the memory of Cy Grant, not the likes of Lenny Henry or Stormzy.
I remember when I was younger I saw Cy Grant on television.I thought he was handsome and had a wondetful voice.x
I would love to hear your memories however brief as trying to write about him atm
Amazing artistic performance and arrangement. The minimalism of it is daring, but it works so well. I've never heard anything quite like it.
I agree! if you don't like one cover don't complain I loved the rendition that Muse did of this and that in return got covered by Adam Lambert of who I think did great justice to this song. And that doesn't change the fact that I like this original either!
@jablkovastrudla Actually, the very BEST version of the song is by the man who originally did it on Broadway -- GILBERT PRICE! He had an unbelievably powerful and controlled voice, and won the roll when Anthony Newley (the composer of the song) heard him sing ---even though Newley readily admits he was not "right" for the part, but his voice was the greatest he'd ever heard. The guy was a sensation! Check it out. It's on You Tube.
its sad how the original version goes un-noticed
I saw Gilbert Price in the original Broadway production - and I continue to like his the best, and the one I harken to when I perform the song - because he not only had a glorious voice and used it brilliantly - but he paid attention to the words, and used it as a strong statement. Too many who have "performed" this use the music as the base for improvisation, and totally ignore the words, the meaning of the song. If an instrumentalists wants to play with it, that's one thing. But the words are important, tied to the music, and should be part of the interpretation. Humble opinion of one who has loved the song since 1965 and sung for over 40 years. (BTW - trivia - Elain Page was in the chorus in the London production, 1st professional appearance)
Beautiful and powerful rendition of this song.
Angelina Jordan, a young Norwegian singing prodigy is introducing lot of the old classics to the new generations. Here are 2 performances of this song by her at the the age of 10. ruclips.net/video/7HaMvkflBAo/видео.html. ruclips.net/video/p8kAL-sGJx8/видео.html
Gilbert Price version is the oldest recorded version and probably the most original. Cy Grant grant sang the original one, which is this alternative jazz version. The original musical version was NOT a London production. It was played around on regional arenas in UK.
THIS one is an alternative jazz version.
THIS one is an alternative jazz version.
Nina is one of my all time favourites BUT some of her songs sound better with a male voice..she has an ..Agressive Style that can make her sound Cruel..thats just my opinion..still ❤ her...
As soon as he started singing, I got chills!!
@mc4rich Actually,
Cy Grant performed this in London a year before it came to the States. I agree that Gilbert has a more powerful and controlled voice but it sounds too trained and not as raw as Cy's. Less emotion. Nina Simone's version definitely makes me feel the joy of freedom more. And Buble? The only way his version could be more offensive is if he performed it in blackface. Somehow, though, the same statement doesn't apply to Muse. At least they made it their own?
100% agree with everything you said. Muse changed the genre, that way it doesn't compete with other versions in your head.
I don't know who I prefer..I just know he did it first .He is the original. Thanks man.
this.. is art ..
A REAL TROPHIE
This NOT the original. This is a jazz version, not the original musical version.
@ShadowcasterZero I really hate when people haven't got a clue what they're talking about. Matt Bellamy is one of the last few remaining, truly talented artists. Don't form generalised opinions just because you didn't like one cover version. Seeing Matt live, playing a piano is what I can only imagine, like watching Chopin in his prime. The guy oozes talent from every pore in his body. Even if their music isn't to your taste, it's fucking retarded to say that Muse suck.
Any art is subject to personal opinion, ridicule, and criticism. I do not understand why MUSE is so popular. Every song, every cover, affects my central nervous system and I shudder in disgust. And you yourself are using your own generalized opinion in an effort to counter mine. Your argument is invalid.
I respect the original artist and his idea of this song but I can't do anything about the fact that I like Muse interpretation more. For me it's like Muse made a new song based on the original and this is why I don't want to say that either of them is BETTER from the other one. Just that I personally prefer Muse version.
@DDJJLL96 and yet you have no respect for the one who sang it first. Ignorance is bliss ey...Don't get me wrong though, i like Muse and their rendition. Not so many people know this came out of a Musical from 1965 called The Roar of the Greasepaint-the Smell of the Crowd written by Andrew Newly and Leslie Briscusse.
this song...... his voice really is much to throaty and it choaks out to much for such a great song. nina simone and muse where the two best covers of it, becuase they both made it great in very diffrent ways. this original version actually needs work, sad to say:/
Muse sucks. Their version has no soul, no feeling. This is a song about discovering and experiencing freedom, having an epiphany. Muse is just noise, masogenisticly playing with his voice and overpowering the melody. Gross. Even Michael Buble' gets it. MUSE SUCKS!
There almost something missing here; sure it is not bad, but I think the Broadway version by Gilbert Price better captured the emotion of the character.
@gevelhet This may be the original version, but to say every cover of this song is crappy is just plain ignorant. This song has been covered many times by many great artists, you can't say every single one of those is bad.
Fuck, this sounds like Jason Segel singing his Dracula song. This is one of my favourite songs, but this version only gets respect for being the original...it's nothing compared to Nina Simone's or Muse's.
2:08 - the end bit of music gives me severely creepy Nico's Nextbots vibes. Everything else is top-notch
i actually think Adam Lambert did the best cover, and i hate that douche. Nina Simone definitely gave it the modern sound we hear in most covers the so kudos to her.
This is a little too subtle for me, and I don't exactly like the lead vocal. To me, this song became amazing only after Nina Simone got a hold of it.
@Scaar81 Isn't it? It's just funny how some people do not know or care where songs come from - ie their history...Frank SInatra also had a version also
Oh no, I hate it. I'm sure I'd like it if Nina didn't rocket her version into gd outer space though lol
@DDJJLL96 Just because it's different does not mean "it's sucks." It's called "interpretation," if you care to know anything about music.
LOL I actually don't like this at all. But I like a couple of the covers that I've heard. Muse, Nina simone, Adam Lambert in particular. This is pretty awful. :)
@michaelthetimelord I actually think I prefer all of the covers, or atleast the ones by Nina Simone, Muse and Michael Buble.
Wax tailor?
covers give life back to original versions like this... i wouldn't even be here for that... so don't complan about muse or other artists... that's stupid
@MintBullet if there were no instruments in it it would be fine but the band sound like they are playing a completely different song entirely
ONLY Nina simone made this done FIERCE.
@OscarWilkins Tell you friends that it's not like this came out LONG before Muse was even a band..... :P
who originally sang this song for everyone to copy, even the pussy cat dolls, thats not right
muse has one of the last great talents as their lead singer. matt Bellamy is possibly one of the best live preformers around and his talent is almost unmatched. seriously, though, it doesnt matter if you like his music, give the band their due. they are true talents. his version really brought this song into the the 21st century and gave it a diffrent sound that i quite enjoy. it really does need a bit more emotion and the melody needs work, but its still an amazing cover.
is this really the original? hmm..I dont like this version..it is uninteresting.. I am searching for the version I heard in a movie a while ago and it was really nice, more melodic, interesting and strong voice.. usually I like originals more because most of the covers are just crappy but with this song it is different
I'm sorry but best cover of this song is the Muse version. epic rock twist ftw?
I didn't like the beggining of this song but it gets really awesome half way through
Fuck this is horrible. I'm going back to Muse and Michael Bublé's version.
Nina took this song to another level. Although this one does have its moments. It's a bit strange which is usually good, but hearing Nina's version killed it for me.
Nina Simone did this song justice I think, but that's just me saying.
isn't nina simone the original? or is it a cover?
No it doesn't...It just adds character....and a certain tone.....
Cy Grant. the singer. is my mothers fathers father. im related to him. :)
TheTedy I was very blessed to have known this fabulous gentleman. He was amazing gentle spiritual soul and I know that he made this world a better place. He will never be forgotten. RIP you special, wonderful man.xx
Cy Grant is my dad, who are you? Would seriously like to know.
@VCHmusic thanks, I´ve already found the version I was looking for, it was michael bublé.
HELP ME! there was a disneychannel commercial, like last year, with this song but with another singer (not nina simone or michael bublé or any other famous version) does anyone know who singsi it?
It could be George Michael or Matt Bellamy
Ive been looking for this since january.. thanks for uploading. Helped with my essay (Y)
This sounds like a cowboy song
in terms of standard it was good for it's day but in terms of the modern age of music it is... how do i put it... shit, sort of like hallelujah by lenoard cowen, im not trying to dis originals im just stating the facts
They are not facts - they are opinions.
funny you say that cuz this is the original version
Meh, I personally like Grant's and Muse's version the best. Simone's is beautiful, tho. :)
nina simone's version it's the most suckiest one
Is this the original one?
No. Not quite. Cy Grant was, indeed, the first person to sing the song on stage in the original production of The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd in 1964. However, I believe that this is a jazzier version that was recorded the following year.
No. Definitly not, but it is the original singer.
We Carly rose way better she should have won!!!!
Such a beautiful voice.
This is so much better than muses awful cover
The fact that nobody seems to know Lieutenant Green did the original kinda sorta bothers me but makes me feel special too that I know.
Lieutenant Green ? please explain...
@@waltervdbus i watched Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons a lot growing up.
Interesting but nobody comes close to Gilbert Price in the original Broadway production. I saw it, and it stopped the show.
He was amazing. They had to turn down or off the volume on the loudspeakers when he performed. Have you listened to 10 years old Angelina Jordan’s version? ruclips.net/video/p8kAL-sGJx8/видео.html
thumbs up if you came here bcoz of haley!!!
I prefer Nina Simone's version
Reah Nicole the way she sings it, it sure sounds like she made the original. #SoMuchSoul
This song is so good,it is impossible to ruin...
A very special version of one of the best songs ever written
Or Jean Dushon ,out swings even Nina.
Pure art!
I came from Jared, the guy who reveals origins of the songs. I thought it's Nina's song. Love this version 👌💛
Most moving version of the song and it's the original - what's the chances of that? ;)
Seriously, it's subtle and restrained unlike a lot of the bombastic covers.
Good Lord, that is a diff way of doing it from Nina Simone, and anybody else I have heard. Still, IMO, the best sung version was by 13 year old Carly Rose Sonenclar.
the original is pretty good
I actually enjoyed this! I'm a huge fan of the Nina Simone version, but now I want to see this play some how. It's beautiful. Cy Grant's voice is cool and very soft. thanks for posting this.
Well this was disappointing.
As long as Anthony Newley is writing and not singing ... I'm good. When that man opens his mouth it's fucking awful!
