Congratulations mate! Very impressive collection! Also, like you, I’m a cinephile and student of cinema and filmmaking. I’ve seen some of you recent acquisitions and I totally agree with you. Criterion is a wonderful company and I’ve also been in love with every single project they take on. It’s really the best! Thank you for sharing your comments! And thank you Criterion always!
👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks for the kind words, Val :)
Great collection, I really like Tootsie and In a Lonely Place is so underrated!! I think its one of Bogart's best performances. Easy Riders good but its pretty crazy, that graveyard scene in particular!!
Super collection, really like the book shelves and the corner that connects the shelves. :)) Criterion is the best ! :)) Cheers mate! Have a nice weekend. MacBeth and the In Laws and some nice documentaries too namely Burroughs. :)
Easy Rider is a great classic, i love the music in it. Gilda is great! I loved Cat people, the lighting and shadows are so good. It Happened one night is such a classic comedy, Its a great story and i love the characters. So many good choices!
Thanks, Ally :) I can't wait for my next Criterion haul now!
Cat people is great and you put me on to some new criterion films love your passion and descriptions you rock man keep it going
Hi! Criterion Collection is incredible, I have about 20 Criterion blu-rays today and I can't wait to have more. However, I live in Brazil, so I have to import them and, yeah, they're not cheap. But they're totally worth it. It's very nice that you now have Criterion in the UK and you got yours at a great price. I really enjoyed your video, I haven't watched any of those you bought, but some of them sound very interesting. Just subscribed!
Thank you so much for watching! Stick around for some special Criterion videos coming soon ;)
Mega haul, good stuff. Would love to pick up a bunch of these, probably closer to xmas time, I highly recommend going region free! Now that I've tied up the first 100 spines of the MoC collection, I'm really getting back into Criterions in a big way, and it couldn't be a better time!
I've got the first 130 spines of Masters of Cinema. I need to brush up on those! Region free, here I come!
My collection is packed with Criterion collection films, Elliot. They're the best. Love the video of your new additions, by the way. Today I just picked up Cat People myself and Brian DiPalma's Dressed to Kill.
Oh, awesome! Dressed to Kill is a great film too. I've got the Arrow blu-ray version.
New subscriber here and wow,am I impressed with your depth of knowledge and passion for all films but especially the classics. I got in to silent films late in life and agree the are really a true visual art form. I think some must see are Metropolis, Sunrise,The Wind,The Big Parade,The Merry Widow,The Crowd,He who Got Slapped and the early Garbo films as she was beautiful, but expressed so much through her eyes and really perfected the silent acting form. keep up the great job and hope someone discovers you and signs you are as a movie critic!!
great collection!! it's funny in america we're really excited about Eureka and indicator labels, we've been spoiled for criterion all these years, but I'm loving the Eureka label!! lol
cheers
Haha, I'm excited for you. Eureka is a great label :)
Awesome collection and great video! Looking to pick up some of the Criterion collection titles here in the states as well.
Thanks for checking it out! Let me know which titles you're thinking of picking up :)
Tootsie, The Player, 12 Angry men, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Seven Samurai are the first 5 I'd love to grab.
Great choices!
Yeah those Criterions are always high priced. That's why we all go crazy over here when they go on sale for half off twice a year. I actually had a lonely Place in my hands twice but had to leave it behind. Love Tootsie of course and I think you'll enjoy Gilda. I've always heard Cat People was pretty good. AnD I actually just got The In-Laws for my birthday so looking forward to that one. Great video Elliot, well done and well spoken and very interesting. You mentioned some movies I've heard of but never seen and other I've never heard of. All I am now interested in seeing. Thanks and you have a new subscriber!
Awesome, thank you so much for the kind words, Rob! When I eventually make it over to the US for a trip, I'm really going to have to restrain myself from buying a bunch of these if a sale is on!
The Barnes & Noble where I live sucks because they don't stock a lot in general because they don't know what's gonna sell. I've had to fucking order all my stuff to the store because they only have a handful in stock, and most of them are duplicates. BUT, they DID have the Blu-ray edition of THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS and I grabbed that shit ON SITE THAT DAY. I just wish they had more than CAT PEOPLE and BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS.
Was recommended here by RUclips because of Criterion, ended up trying to see what you have on your shelves. Anyways yeah, Criterion is always quite pricey. Here in America, the prices are usually $27 for a normal release and $60+ for collection editions (on Amazon).
Oh also thanks for showing that edition of The Man Who Fell to Earth in the background. Now I know what to expect with my pre-order.
Thanks for leaving a comment, John! I'm planning to do a proper unboxing of The Man Who Fell to Earth, showing off what's inside, so keep an eye out for that one.
Elliot Coen That'll be interesting since our edition won't have that fourth disk your edition has. We are getting a 3 disk with a 73 page book.
Well you have some great collection mate
Thanks so much, Dodo. I may do a full collection video soon, if I have a few hours spare, haha!
Great haul there. I've had my eye on these for some time now. With the recent price drops i may have to take the plunge.
Good channel by the way, any chance of a collection overview?
Thank you! Yes, so many people have asked me for a collection overview. I plan to do one soon, but trying to work out how to do it is a logistical nightmare!
Amazing collection dude! Keep up the good work. We subscribed
Thank you so much :)
Awesome pick-ups! since my last criterion haul I pick up a few more, I also pick up gilda and lavventura.☺
Thanks! I loved L'avventura :)
NOBODY can pass up the 4K L'AVVENTURA restoration Blu-ray.
Tootsie!!! i picked that one up too. Eating Raoul is in my collection now.
GO, TOOTSIE, GOOOOO!
You hammer my Criterion Collection blu rays all in one thumbnail on this video :) I have Tootsie and Easy Rider, love those films and I am planning on getting Grey Gardens definitely. So many releases not available in UK yet too, I am after Quadrophenia, Something Wild, Slacker and Boyhood especially. And I am hoping to check out loads more I haven't ever had the chance to see before. Great products they have. We are being spoilt as collectors and consumers :)
Hope HMV still have their 2 for £25 deal a while longer also.
I can't wait to see what they bring to the UK next year! Hopefully we get some Ingmar Bergman films too! I think they will keep these in the 2 for £25 for a bit longer, so try and pick them up!
Sick collection, man!
I just bought Punch-Drunk Love since the criterion are 50% right now! Hoping to also pick up Y Tu Mama Tambien.
Also, are Twin Peaks and The Man Who Fell To Earth good? Still haven't gotten around to seeing those yet.
Thanks, Tyler! I'm hoping to pick up Punch Drunk Love soon too!
The Man Who Fell To Earth is a weird one, not one I'd instantly recommend to everyone, but it's got David Bowie in it which is a strong point. I still haven't gone through the whole of Twin Peaks yet. It's one of those TV shows in my massive backlog, but I'd recommend based on what I've seen so far :)
Nic Roeg doesn't make goods films... He makes AWESOME films.
Excellent haul! I'm currently saving my pennies to pick up a few more of these!
L'Avventura isn't an example of neo-realist film-making at all. Antonioni's work as a whole pushes toward post neo-realism. Visconti and De Sica are excellent examples of neorealist film-making. I wouldn't class Fellini as neo-realist either. Love all of them though!
Thanks! Yeah, already been pulled up on my mistaking of terms. At least I know now :)
I've heard a lot about Criterion Blu-Rays but have never got around to looking for them. Definitely will consider getting Easy Rider and Dr Strangelove which I think is available in the UK
I'd totally recommend both of those films on Criterion, Aaron. Like I said too, now is the time to get them while they are on offer :)
Dr.Strangelove is the same transfer as the previous UK disc and the new extras are only about 60 minutes in length. If you've not got it on Blu-ray or you're a massive fan of the move it's a must buy at £12.50, otherwise not worth the bother.
Yeah, the old Sony version is the one I have. You can pick it up for about £5 now, but get the Criterion version, honestly.
I can't wait until 12 Angry Men and Les Diaboliques are released in the UK
wow! insane haul dude!
Thanks for checking it out!
How the hell can you afford them all? For me, because of a combination of affordability, bangs for your buck, technical specs, bonus features, and outstanding booklets/essays the BFI dual format releases are hard to beat. Many are close to a third of the price of Criterion releases.
I'm either good or bad with money, depends how you look at it! Seriously though, most of my disposable income goes on movies.
@@ElliotCoen Among my favourite Criterion releases are Brazil, The Battle of Algiers and Short Cuts (which includes a Raymond Carver book - a collection of the short stories upon which the film is based).
Love In A Lonely Place. Gloria Grahame is stunning in this film.
I totally agree. Mad crush on her!
Very nice collection of criterions man! I just picked up that Easy Rider copy and it's stunning. I'd love to know how Burroughs is, he's definitely one of my favorite authors! Have you seen Naked Lunch, based on his book? Awesome video man!
Ah thanks! Naked Lunch is on my watchlist actually! What Burroughs novel should I start with, if I want to give his writing a go?
Elliot Coen Awesome! I think I would recommend Naked Lunch first because it's probably his most widely known novel; that was the first one I read. You could also start chronologically and read his first novel Junkie, it's pretty much an autobiography detailing his addiction. Both would be excellent books to start with in my opinion =D
Excellent, thank you again :)
Nice. I've been collecting Blu-rays since 2014, only the ones I really like. Right now I have about 150 and I have the ones I think needed. Now, I'm going to start collecting Criterions, and I'm looking for some movies to buy. I just ordered on Amazon Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory. Which movies would you recommend the most, you know, for starters?
There are so many films I would recommend out of the Criterion Collection. Paths of Glory is a great choice. Other personal favourites are The Red Shoes, Paris Texas, Harakiri, M, 12 Angry Men. If you want more suggestions, feel free to message me on Twitter or Facebook!
£18? That’s a sale, here. $22.50
L'Avventura isn't a neo-realist film. Neo-realism was a film movement that largely addressed working class naturalism, disadvantages with the poor or wartime struggles. Films like Bicycle Thieves, Shoeshine, Rome Open City, Paisan, these are notable neorealism films.
L'Avventura doesn't fit with that movement at all with its existential themes and way it broke conventional film language techniques. It is still a brilliant amazing film though.
Cat People is great. It's short because it was a B-movie from a series of B-budget films RKO had producer Val Lewton work on when they were in financial troubles following losing money on Orson Welles films like Citizen Kane and Magnificent Ambersons when they saw Universal was making a lot off of their series of classic monster movies.
Lewton worked with some great filmmakers early in their careers on these like Jacques Tourneur and Robert Wise. And they made some terrific psychologically driven horror films starting with Cat People. I'm eagerly looking forward to Criterion releasing more of Lewton's horror films. I have an old Warner Bros boxset of all of them but I absolutely love I Walked with a Zombie, Bedlam, and The 7th Victim and bluray releases would be a treat. The rest are all well worth seeing too, especially Cat People, Curse of the Cat People, The Leopard Man, and Body Snatcher.
It Happened One Night is easily my favorite Capra film, it's wonderful and one of my favorite comedies from the period. I'm not as big on Capra as I am on some of the other directors of the time like Preston Sturges and Howard Hawks and coincidentally enough you also got the Criterion release of my favorite film of his, Only Angels Have Wings.
Speedy is a lot of fun too. Harold Lloyd is a little underappreciated compared to Buster Keaton and though he's no Keaton overall he has some terrific silent comedies. Speedy and Safety Last! are pretty essential.
Great haul. Pretty jealous of a lot of em, especially that Only Angels Have Wings bluray which I have yet to upgrade to.
Wow, thanks for such a great comment. You're totally right; my bad for getting my film theory terms mixed up. I tend to lump the great Italian directors of the 50s and 60s together in my head, and forget that their filmmaking techniques could be radically different. All that said, L'Avventura is still a wonderful film, you're right. I'm glad you enjoyed the haul!
sick haul! If you havent yet you should definitely check out the new Criterion Collection app called FilmStruck. It's brilliant!
It has me highly intrigued! I have such a large blu-ray backlog though, it would be criminal for me to subscribe right now. Thanks for watching :)
I have just found your channel :) I'm a massive Letterboxd user, and found out about the whole Criterion Collection through there!!! I have also just signed up for Filmstruck's 14 day free trial and I'm SO excited!!! Have you seen Carnival of Souls?!!!!!!!
Oooh, how exciting, and thanks for watching, Lucy! I'm on Letterboxd too, give me a follow and I'll follow you on there as well. I LOVE Carnival of Souls. Such an eerie, quirky vibe to it.
Ah amazing, I would have guessed you would be on it :D what's your username? Mine is 'lucyalicewhit'. I come up in the search results :)
Ah good man!! I watched it for the first time a few days ago and i'm so in love with it. It is so atmospheric, plus the imagery is insane! Love it!
Damn, this popped up in my recommended, and I'm shocked at the appearance difference in just a few years. Gotta say, you look much better here. I know movie watching isn't the most active hobby, but you've gotta find the time for fitness. Get that jawline back, son. 💪
I know you mean no harm but this comment made me feel terrible. I've been through a lot since this video was made. I've had health issues that have caused me to gain weight. Just think before you make comments like this to other people. I wouldn't want you to make them feel worthless too.
@@ElliotCoen Sorry, my guy. I apologize. But there is no need to feel "worthless." Even if I was coming from a place of malice, you should never allow someone, especially a stranger, to make you feel that way. You obviously have a lot going for you, and I hope your health issues can be surmounted so that you can get back to taking care of yourself. We only get one body and one life; we ought to make the most of it. 💪
@@mv28 thanks so much, that makes me feel better. And thanks for watching my videos!
Love this video! Subbed!
Thanks, Alex!
Lov your channel @ your blu Rays
Wait, how the *fuck* does he have the 3-disc THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH Blu-ray already? That doesn't come out til next month!!
I'm from the future! (actually, we just got it early in the UK)
great video by the way :D
Thanks, Alfie!
Get vid and well spoken you got my subscription keep it up
Thank you, Nick!
omg goals
Is this the one that started it all?
Yes! How young and naive I was!
What do you use to watch these films? Are they all region free? Please answer would be a great help.
Hey, these are all region B Criterions, so they play on my UK player (though I do have a multi region player too!) thanks for watching.
Oh thankyou very much! May i ask where did you buy them from
Oh and i almost forgot, what region free blu ray player do you use? Its been a pain finding one thats region-less. 🙏
Hey mate. Where in MCR can you get 2 Criterions for £25? great video.
Thanks! You can get them in that deal at HMV or at Fopp :)
I'll have to get myself down to Fopp. If you're thinking of importing I've just bought a load from Barnes and Noble. At current they have a 50% sale on all criterion titles and the international shipping is pretty cheap.
I'm eyeing it up! Just worried about import taxes....
I had the same reservation but they split my order in to two packages. Each one came in at just under £100 which I believe allowed me to dodge any additional charge. Either that or I was just lucky.
More Criterion, pls...
LOL "Criterion don't put out bad films" 10 seconds letter holds up Easy Rider.
Haha. I'm guessing you're not a fan of the film, then? I really enjoyed Easy Rider :)
Jimmy Savile - Official Fan Channel haha true. . . and don't forget about "Armageddon" and "The Rock"
Jimmy Savile - Official Fan Channel Also Tootsie. Total trash.
If you ever need help getting criterions from the US just let me know
Oh, for real? That'd be great. Can you please message me on Twitter or Facebook so we can sort it out? :)
how the hell do you know all these film directors and genres lol
I buy and watch more films than is probably healthy for a human being!
Criterion doesn't put out bad films? I would agree....but Scanners.....
Scanners is special in its own right! Cronenberg's style is certainly an acquired taste.
Also, the Scanners Criterion box looks incredible. I wish we had that over here!
Well... Scanners personally I find heavily floored. They've just announced a John waters film... Hmmmmm
What did Polanski actually do??
I have criterion collection
Fellini wasnt a neorealist director
I know, I flubbed it! Thanks for watching
Elliot Coen great picks btw
Great collection, I really like Tootsie and In a Lonely Place is so underrated!! I think its one of Bogart's best performances. Easy Riders good but its pretty crazy that graveyard scene in particular!!
In a Lonely Place wowed me, in all honesty. The graveyard scene in Easy Rider was a trip alright....
