Amazonia Aqua Soil - Part 2: How To Safely Add Extra Aqua Soil To An Established Tank

  • Part 2 of my small series on using Amazonia Aqua Soil address how to safely add extra Amazonia Aqua Soil to an already established tank. Part 1 focused on some of the basic of Amazonia Aqua Soil, specifically, the fact that Amazonia Aqua Soil will cause an ammonia spike once it is set up and water is added to the tank.
    In part 2: What I didn't know was what is I want to add a small amount of replacement Amazonia Aqua Soil? Would it cause an unsafe ammonia spike? Even if it was a small amount of Amazonia Aqua Soil would I still have to soak it? I couldn't find a direct answer on that, so I decided to do my own experiment in this video.
    I hope this is helpful to those of you who are considering using Amazonia Aqua Soil in the future. It's a great substrate, and though it requires a few extra steps, plants love it!
    Part 1 On Amazonia Aqua Soil: • Using Amazonia Aqua So...
    Using A Funnel To Replace Substrate: • Adding Extra Substrate...
    Keep tankin!

    I pre soak with tank water(lots of mum) for 30 + days and I don’t have loss of life. I also put soil type(Amazon,fluval stratus)substrate in filter bags and cap them with sand or pebbles.
    This works best for me. Most of my tanks are planted dark water Amazon biotopes.

    Liked and shared, now commenting.
    My Aqua soil is now breaking down into fine silt after about 2 years, and I am beginning to remove that silt by gravel vacuuming.
    Which leads me to the whole replacement issue in an established tank, so a very relevant topic Mike. As always, Super Video :)

      Is it possible to just leave the silt alone? Or does that cause issues for the tank?

    • @pixazelz

      @@ebonhawken574 when you have bottom feeder such as loaches and corydora , the tank will get cloudy fastt . in my experience the powder from dirt substrate will taint moss brown and plants leave too and it's really difficult to remove and when the powder get on plant it stop their growth since they can't get good light and it also make algae grow on plant in my experience

    Great miniseries. Amazonia reminds me of a sharp kitchen knife: a great tool, but it has its dangers and you have to treat it with respect.

    Thanks for sharing! I added new aquasoil to a mature setup and I got the worst staghorn algae I've ever seen. After quite a few water changes and late night maintenance sessions I ended up resetting the tank. Now I know I must have caused a pretty big ammonia spike. I'll soak it next time!

    I know this comment is late but THANK YOU for this! I was looking to add a potted Amazon sword 🪴 to my tank but I didn’t know if I could just leave the soil in a bucket of water and do water changes that way or if I needed to “clean” the substrate of ammonia by setting up a new tank
    Thank you for keeping it short and sweet 🤍

    im glad I watched this video before putting ada amazinia soil on top of my fluval stratum that started to break down .... could I speed up the prosses by putting seachem safe that remove chloramine , chlorine and amonia and putting some purigen bac into the filtred bucket ?.....would putting only seachem safe that remove amonia directly into the bucket make the substrate safe directly ?

    Wonder what the results would be if you did the same experiment with an established sponge filter in the same bucket.

    Thanks for the video! But wouldn’t bacteria break down this amount of ammonia if you added this amount of soil to your tank?
    The amount of water is also much more in your tank compared to the water bucket. Will this not lower the amount of ammonia that you’re measuring in the water buckets?
    And one final tip: maybe try the light version of Amazonia when you’re adding it to a running tank.

  • @aquablaster86

    I understand wanting to error on the side of caution, but there is no beneficial bacteria in the bucket breaking down the ammonia as it releases. Either way thanks for sharing the info!

      Agree, it might be a slight spike, but it should be able to handle the excess ammonia. Do not feed for a couple of days.... just to limit the ammonia!

    If your ph is below 7 which ada soil tends to produce, almost all the ammonia exists as ammonium and is not as toxic. In my experience fish are fine. I had 2ppm ammonium in my tank for about 2 weeks and settled at 0.25 only after 4 weeks and my livestock were fine

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  3 года назад +1

      Great point, Sufyaan! You are absolutely right! My pH runs about 7.6, so I have to be extra careful, and I try to err on the side of caution in the videos, but you are right on. Glad you shared!

    After set up new tank with Amazonia version 2 i noticed ph level is buffering between 6 to 6.5 but the Ammonia level and Nitrate level shoot up very high. The current Ammonia level is between 1 to 2 ppm and the Nitrate level is around 70 to 80 ppm. So, as I asked earlier also is it related to daily water change ? What percentage of daily water change is required? My tank size is 90x45x45 cm . First two days I changed 20 lts water . Now on third day 30% water change will work to bring down the level of ammonia and nitrate as per desired level ? Eagerly waiting for your valuable inputs

Me as newbie ,I washed and rinse the soil many times. Can I still use this one? and also I will use it to Established tank with 10 goldfish on it. is it safe to use it? or I need to Buy new Aquasoil? Exactly what i need to do, I have a thing layer of pool filter sand about an inch, should I just put this on top? Or should I just remove the sand first? Thanks

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  4 года назад +2

      Andy - this is going to be more work, but - I would remove the sand and put the Amazonia soil down first. Reason being....as your plant roots start anchoring themselves (depending on what plants you have), growing further down into your substrate, you want those roots to reach down and have that Amazonia soil and all the nutrients as a base. You could cap the Amazonia soil with a thin layer of pool filter sand certainly for the look - but I would do it so the Amazonia soil is the foundation. Hope that helps a little 😀

    Sir, I recently bought 10 kg of Amazonia soild for my 22 gallon Tank. On popular belief I thoughly rinsed the soil 3 to 4 times to get rid of dirt, debri and toxin in from before filling it with water. My question is does rinsing it removes all nutrient and fertilizers from it.?

    • @petereinhardt
      @petereinhardt 3 года назад +1

      Amazonia doesn’t need to be rinsed. rinsing it doesn’t wash away all the nutrients but it does start breaking down the soil so if you rinsed it really vigorously then it may break down into dust sooner then it would have if you had not rinsed

    • @saro5098
      @saro5098 3 года назад +1

      @@petereinhardt great video. i also accidentally washed my AS and after adding water to my tank, it became so cloudy. do i need to regularly change water til it becomes clear? if the water would be clear, is it a good assumption that the ammonia has dropped significantly?

    dmichales fish den can you please help me.
    one of my koi fishes is swimming sideways and is just laying in the pond and doing nothing, she is not even eating.

    • @dmichaelsfishden
      @dmichaelsfishden  5 лет назад

      4hin3x - sorry for the late reply. I'm really sorry to hear about your koi fish. It's hard to tell what might be wrong, but obviously she isn't feeling good. Swimming sideways certainly sounds like a swim bladder issue or infection - it also could be an internal infection, parasites...She may have also injured her back somehow. In these situations, when I have no clear idea what is going on, I like to quarantine and try a really broad spectrum antibiotic. The best one I know of is Seachem Polyguard. It treats bacterial, fungus, parasitic issues all together. In this situation thats what I would try,. I hope thats at least a little helpful. Hard to know more without seeing her. Hope she pulls through 😀

    It's ADA Ammozonia aquasoil

  • @Kam-go3bc
    @Kam-go3bc Месяц назад

    Doesn't this kind of defeat the point of using aquasoil? If your tank is cycled the ammonia will be converted to nitrite then nitrate and will be food for your plants.
