The first phrase of this video is, “Post conversional”. Looking backward we may label him as a convert but I’m not sure Luther would have considered himself one. He would have considered himself a strong critic of some accepted teachings but not a convert. What did he convert from? He changed very little of his Roman Catholic positions. he certainly didn’t change the practice of getting rid of “heretics“ nor did he change the accepted practice of prodigious drinking.
Carl Trueman’s Reformation class at WTS, lecture 15, “Luther and the Jews.” A real historian explains it without all the sensationalism and extremes of both sides. The historical reality is not very popular with the sides that want to either lionize or villainize Luther .
In Luther’s belief that scripture wasn’t of man’s own 2 Peter 1:20-21-20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Timothy 3:16-17-16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
It still needs reformation... the way we do "church" - it is still in a way catholic. Church in new testament is active, participatory, serving one another, etc. Today reformed church is church of few men. Few men serve, rest are passive. It is still the same catholic model. New testament churches were smaller groups where all people paricipated. And it was not service or worship. It was done for the purpose of edification. " What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. " (1 Cor. 14:26).
I’m curious as to why we only believe some of Martins beliefs. He believed in infant baptism, immaculate conception, perpetual virginity of Mary. Why pick and choose only some beliefs? If he was correct, wouldn’t you believe everything?
Those beliefs changed over time, and certainly after he took issue with these Roman beliefs. Infant baptism was practiced mainly b/c in those days, babies got sick and died. The things we have vaccines and medicines for now. But we don't take our "beliefs" from a man, but rather from God alone!

I'm a "reformed" Calvinist Christian, but I wonder, should we really revere Luther so much? He couldn't stand Jews in his later days and we would call him out today for some of his leftover Catholic doctrine. Let's just stick to the Bible, or do we claim to be of Apollos, or Paul, or Martin Luther?
@HearGodsWord I do. I just hear too many of us reformers giving too many accolades to Luther when we know it is God who does the work. Makes me uncomfortable that any of us should be lifted up for anything we have done here on earth. Any revelation Luther had came from God. He gets no pat on the back for that.
I've noticed that we Protestants, for as long as I can remember, seem to always "exalt" Martin Luther while rarely, if ever, speaking or writing about some of his major flaws. We should realize that he probably wouldn't be allowed anywhere near a pulpit within today's reformed/evangelical church. Luther advocated that women who denied physical intimacy to their husbands be executed by the government. (The Estate of Marriage, 1522, translated by Walther I. Brandt, from Luther’s Works, Vol. 45, pp. 32-34). Luther also wrote about prostitutes "If I were a judge, I would have such a poisonous, syphilitic whore tortured by being broken on the wheel and having her veins lacerated, for it is not to be denied what damage such a filthy whore does to young blood" (Luther on Women: a Sourcebook, Cambridge University Press, 2003, pp. 157-158). But, this all pales in comparison to horrendous remarks Luther made about Jews. There is MUCH more to be said on THAT topic. Perhaps in a separate comment sometime.
Luther's hatred for everything Jewish was also the inspiration for Adolf Hitler's own pogroms against the Jews. This is partly why the idea that the Torah is a Jewish set of religious rites that Christ came to abolish permeated the Protestant denominations ever since. Protestantism at its core is an anti-Jew religion.

This is a typical approach protestants often have when raising objections with Catholics, where they come with an array of of various different objections all at the same time. More than happy to deal with various objections, but one. at. a. time. (thanks!) 2. If you can dish out objections, be open and honest enough to accept honest answers, even if they're not convenient (and perhaps cause you to question any deeply held protestant belief and/or any pre-existing anti-Catholic narrative you may have) 3. Respect and courtesy both ways 4. Have the truth - whole and undefiled - as the objective. If that causes you to re-think what you've been taught to date about Catholicism, then be big and honest enough to admit it - and all that that requires, eg. conversion (which ties in with point #2).
