Omgosh ! Thank you Garret for this video❤️My Giant Schnauzer, Marschall Dillon, is 19 months old now and because of you❣️ training him with your techniques is helping me turn Marschall in to my dream dog. He loves playing with our Miniature Schnauzer and two Yorkshire Terriers. For a big dog, he’s very gentle with them. Even our two cats ! He is everything you described in this video to a “T” Literally !! The right owners will love this breed

Thank you for this video. I spend much more time trying to talk people OUT of a giant schnauzer than praising them. I have two large females and spend hours of consistent training, grooming, etc. All you mentioned here. When people see our girls, they see the product of firm boundaries and consistent work by them and for them. So many giant schnauzers end up in rescues and shelters, even as early as 8 months of age, because people have no idea what they are truly getting. I tell everyone that walking with a giant at your side is similar to carrying a weapon, loaded and cocked. If you can't handle that level of responsibility, get a mini.

Giant Schnauzers i think are the best all around breed for anything. They can be trained to do literally any kind of work protection, scent, agility, service animal, etc... Requires a lot of training like Garret mentioned but they are amazing breed. Anyone looking for one i would highly recommend Skansen Kennels in california. The owner Cynthia has been breeding this breed for over 70 years. She knows whats shes doin haha. One thing Garrret forgot to mention is that they are Hypoallergenic and dont shed. Thought id mention that.

While Skansen Kennels has been breeding for a long time, they now have a bad reputation among other breeders. Several of the breeders I spoke to while looking for a Giant Schnauzer commented on it. I believe their focus is on show line dogs, not working line. The other thing I heard was the sheer number of breeding dogs being kept by Skansen was very very high, and that the quality and control is not the same as it was.

Two generations of personal home dogs ago, when my two boys were young, I had a perfect male Giant Schnauzer named Amigo, who has imprinted himself on our family history. He was extremely accepting/submissive with the kids climbing all over him, while being naturally protective of them.
One thing we'd do to exercise him is to take him to a football field. The boys would be at the 20 yard lines. Starting at the 50, he'd easily catch one son running into one end zone. He'd run back to me at the 50, when my other son would take off to the other end zone. Doing that back-and-forth over the full field 5-6 times would have Amigo taking a big lay-down break. A tired puppy is a ____ puppy. Bottom line there is that he covered ground very well. Overall, I say he wasn't extremely quick/agile, but fast. (Comparing him to a German Shepherd. A Belgian Malinois might be as fast overall.)
His overall favorite game was "Catch Daniel" (my youngest son). He'd chase Daniel anywhere, with no end-game predatory behavior. I would't call the G-Schnauzer extemely smart compared GSDs or Belgian Mals, etc., but Amigo did things like teach himself to navigate playground apparatus. He could climb ladders, crawl across rope nets, and go down straight or spiral slides to CHASE Daniel.
He ended up around 110 pounds as a adult, and had a very strong bite. (What's the saying about them? A fast as a German Pinscher with a bite as strong as a Rottweiler.) He could take a cow leg bone and bite chunks off it until it was gone, so we had to limit his time with a bone. Pig ears were like potato chips to him... gone in seconds. (He was a food driven boy.) There's some good Schutzhund videos out there of Riesen Shnauzers on the run just rag-dolling the guys in bite sleeves.
A Giant Schnauzer's bark is very deep and loud. We live in Alaska, and I can confirm hearing him from over a mile away.
He was very friendly towards all people and animals, with a few exceptions. Small kids could come up and hug him, and he loved it. For some reason, he hated moose. He wouldn't attack them, but they had to Be Gone. He'd shepherd them out away from our house and neighborhood. If a moose charged him, it called for a play bow, and an increase in intensity... Wierd but OK by me once I saw how he could easily avoid getting stomped.
On the dog aggression side, the only dog I saw him react negatively to was a Pitbull that snapped at him, trying to bite him. (I won't go into depth on that, but Amigo didn't end up hurting the other dog... which is good.)
Amigo's only negative was that he had epilepsy. It showed up at about 2.5 years. I'd guess it took some time off his life. He lasted to just a little over 10 years. If you're experienced with dogs, and can live with the size and the shorter life-span of a large dog, I'd say go for it. (Also... There are some more aggressive G-Schnauzers, but we picked a great one as a family dog. A good breeder should be able to steer the selection.)
Sorry for the long post, but Amigo was a great dog.
More military and police K9 handler interviews would be great.

Great video. Giant Schnauzer is a great dog in the legal aspect of owning a dog. You almost never find them in the lists of your neighborhood banned breeds like often happens with GSD, Doberman, Corso. The same situation with insurance prices. My aunt had two of these. Once she went on vacation and had my older aunt dog sit, problem was they wouldn’t let her out of the house and were blocking the door, (possibly separation anxiety as they weren’t being used to being left alone). My uncle had to drive over and call them off.

The minis are just smaller versions. I have 2 that I pet sit and LOVE them. Noisy dogs but otherwise great and they do respond to commands to be quiet. The grooming is right on. Their owner gets them groomed regularly and they are trained to sit when they come in for paw wipes or full body toweling when it's raining or snowing. Garrett is spot on about the training aspect. They are smart and can learn but you have to put the effort in.

@@Dr.MeganStinson ya. That’s crazy. I really don’t think a giant is good as a service dog especially if someone could be chronically ill and may not have the energy to get up yk. I also don’t recommend a Aussie shepherd. They r herding dogs and have way too much anxiety and I honestly don’t think I will get another one for my next service dog. I love my dog to the bottom of my heart just don’t think it’s for me. But it sounds like giants r more for guarding then for servicing someone.

All the groomers we have taken our Giant Schnauzer to have loved him! They get so excited to groom him because they don't see Giant schnauzers too often mostly the see the minis, but it is expensive. And all schnauzer owners have asked the question, "Is that pee or beard water on the floor?" You did forget about the Velcro aspect of them although I love how you emphasized the stubbornness several times, people really don't take that into consideration a lot of time.

Hi Garret, I am one of your German fans 😁. You talking with a German accent was really hilarious well done !
As always a very interesting video.
Can you make a report about a giant poodle going in attack mode is impressI’ve look? Poodle seven the big ones are often ridiculed but they had been bred like schnauzers for being a hunting and protecting dog, especially when it comes to duck hunting. When I was a kid, I saw them as police dogs and they were quite impressive when they are not mistreated as fashion victims. I don’t know if it is true, but I’ve heard that the power of their bite is higher than a Doberman’s. Poodles are really good guard dogs highly intelligent with this huge will to please and a high hunting drive. A giant poodle attacking is not fun.I like that even when they are very serious and very disciplined in training or defending they are still very funny dogs when they are not working. Their whole body is strong and always so elegant. In my experience a giant poodle needs a good amount of physical training and a lot of brain stimulus. The grooming acquires a real commitment. Jesus…But they don’t lose so much hair and the body odour is very low.
I think they are easier to train than Schnauzers.
    What is your opinion?
Could I talked you in filming a portrait of a giant poodle? 😜🙃
    Greetings from Berlin ❤

Please help me! I have to take my older dog (GS-Boxer cross) to a hospital and leave there for 3 days. He is 10 and I never left him alone a single night or elsewhere than home for a minute. He is a good boy but very attached. I have 3 days left. Do you have something for me to make this less stressful for him? He has heartworms and it's important for him to stay calm. Thank you so much! Good video btw, one of my favorite breeds! I'm always following your work!

Golden retrievers actually have a bit of natural protection instinct built in and do well with kids (under supervision when they're young, of course).

Mannnnnnnnnnn I love these dogs! My top 2 picks of 'non-exotic' breeds i this and the Cane Corso. The hair upkeep is what keeps me from leaving the breed to others; and the health conditions are a bit complicated

Glad you mentioned about the aggressiveness with the Russian Terrier. I've only ever seen one that this idiot, who should never have owned one, brought to the dog park. That dog was scary! Thank God when I saw it, it was on leash but I had heard that he had let it l off and it had attacked at least two other dogs!

@@DBA84 good breeding is important for a proper temperament. I owned 3 of them over 25 yrs, and interacted with many more. Socialization and training like Garrett does is so important.
Two of mine, one male and one female, were therapy dogs. All three absolutely adored kids (supervised of course). Both my males were from a very wonderful breeder, were Conformation Champions, and lived to 13 and 14 respectively.

@@1packatak thank you so much for replying! That’s incredible that your Rotts lived for so long. Says a lot about you as an owner and the breeder!
I’m definitely aware of the early and frequent socialization and obedience training needs. If you don’t mind me asking, as technical first time owner with small children would a Rottweiler be a good choice? My family and I really want a family dog that would be great with our children and make my wife feel safe when I’m not home.
My wife was unfortunately a victim of a home invasion before we met and she has trauma. She feels safe when I’m home, but I think a guardian breed like the Rottweiler would really help her when I’m away

    • @1packatak

@@DBA84 i can tell you my husband traveled extensively when we had our Rotts. Even though they were never protection trained, just a couple of nice big barks got people’s attention! I also liked that when I walked them, people moved to the other side of the street. Especially with the two males-230 lbs of Rottie gathers a lot of attention!
Mine were very, very social. However, only my family and a couple neighbors really knew how they were just goofy. When people, especially strangers, asked if they were protective, I always replied “you do not want to mess with their Mama. They will not be happy”. We did have an incident once where some strangers wandered into our yard. I did not know they were there, and let the boys out to potty. Several huge barks and a “boys come” command from me had the strangers back in their car very quickly. Never saw them again.
As far as being with kids, getting them trained with a system like Garrett’s is key. Establishing rules and boundaries will set you and your wife up for success. And keep your kids safe around them.
