Fabulous. I have space for one of these. I have no VCO, and no Mono (though Im not AS fussed about that - Im happy using a Poly in mono mono). I do rely on "onboard" FX and do prefer to be able to save patches (which most VCOs dont give). this could be perfect - the other option is a Minilolgue XD desktop. i LOVE the way you approach your Vids as a "user" not a "reviewer". Honest approach. You are in my top 4 "goto" places when Im researching (along with Nick at Sonic State, Jamie at GEO Synths and Loopop).
Oh - ill ask this as you have done some 3rd party Osc for Minilogue XD. I have one space available and it will be EITHER a Typhon OR a Minilogue XD. Typhon has proper envelopes v the Minilogues AD filter env, has more LFOs and Envs - Minilogue has more Osc, the digital one, more hands on control and is poly of course. Neither of those "sets" of pros and cons make the choice. Ultimately its about a full on, vintage analogue type sound Im after. I know Typhon can do that - not sure Minilogue can....If you could have ONE of them - which would you have?
I have to be honest i want to like it and it has some nice features but the sounds don't make me say I have to have it. I like synths that have more personality that you instantly say oh that's synth xyz, like a Virus you know it's a Virus the way it sounds. Anyhow, just my personal tastes not knocking it I just don't think it's for me. Great review though!
Oberheim Matrix 12 had a LAG. I used to have a Matrix 12, but yeah...I used to have a lot of things. Definitely TYPHON is smarter than Erebus V3. But do you love it's sounds as much as you once loved the Erebus V3 (or V2 for that matter)? Thanks. I'm guessing, by virtue of the fact that--it seems--you can't stop buying Typhons, that it must sound AS GOOD as Erebus or NYX V1.
Hi, Tim! Best video for the Typhon users! Thanks! My question: i also want this "stand" (? dont know the word in english, sorry) for the unit, your bläck one, very comfotable, but in germany i cannot buy it. A tip? Sylvie from germany
Only me, with a question: The synth setup here, you could substitute the Abyss with the Nymphs and that would work, right ? Nymphes is Mono Out, but effects and onward out of Typhon are Stereo, so wouldn’t this ALL be good for Nymphes? This morphed into 2 questions…
Ordered mine from Thomann this friday. It said that it would be in stock and send out around the 20th, so i really hope that to get mine soon too. A bit discouraged by the comments about a mid October batch that aparently seems to be sold out elsewhere, so hopefully Thomann isn't playing tricks on me haha.
DivingInSpace All the stock Andertons were getting this month were pre-sold, one of them to me. Anyone going there now is being told December. Looking like the hardware synth of 2020...

That realy a FAT synth! It would be a monster in Polyphonic with all that modulation possibilities. And the SineVibe FX its crazy, sound totaly organic. Would be great if they can make a FX pedal to use it with synth.
Hi, Tim! Thanks for your "stand-answer", i have found one at our IKEA-shop. My second question (i am a beginner, sorry): the great sounding TYPHON has got an external INPUT. I dont know how to connect it?! From where comes the cable into it? From the OUT of another Synthesizer (i.e. a Volca Drum)? Or from my rme-Interface-out? Thanks for your info!!!!! I also do not know how to get a Preset/library app for my version 2.0.1 (because of OS High Sierra), so i cannot do a total reset of presets, but that is not my main question. Best, Sylvie from germany
Hi Sylvie. The external input is expecting a regular audio signal at normal line levels, so yes any audio output from a synth or audio interface should work. There's more information in the user manual.
I updated to firmware 4.0 but my computer doesn't recognize it as an audio device or a midi device. The first firmware failed so i did it again and got it to succeed, but it never showed up as an audio device. So I went ahead and did the firmware again and it still is not showing up as an audio or midi device in studio or windows. Can you help me?
Sorry to hear of your issue. You're ahead of me, I haven't tried v4 yet. Hopefully someone else can help, but Dreadbox support are great so definitely get in touch with them if you don't resolve it some other way
I share your opinion on the patches originally present, they are all too "crunchy" and the risk is to direct the purchase too much, or lead people to think that this synth is not good for them. they should have balanced the patches with softer sounds :) are there any "softer" preset collections that you recommend, downloadable online? Thank you
Very late comment, but apparently a preset exists to open the VCA so that external audio can be processed by the effects. @Loopop explains all at: ruclips.net/video/SBHwzNZxPeU/видео.html
Hi, it's just a basic stand by reloop. Pretty sure it's this one... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/186029136793?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=5cQq3ZwkRru&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=-dNapvu2Tpy&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Tim, couldn't one connect the Minilogue XD to the TYPHON in the same way you've done here with the 4-voice Dreadbox? I'd bet that some SAT afternoon you could make a Nymphes-type software compliment for Typhon, to address the light bit of menu-diving. Good lesson on this one! Thanks.
Hi, Yes you could hook up the XD's MIDI out to the Typhon to gate it while passing in the XD's audio. The main drawback I'd say is you'd lose the stereo nature of the XD's wonderful effects since the audio-in on the Typhon is mono.
Good point and thank you. In case you're swamped, I'll add THE END here, and you may move on. Just like Poly Aftertouch fixed my Nectar Panorama KEYS, Polychain DIY, I suspect, will solve my fixation on connecting one hardware synth to another---particularly given that I haven't yet purchased hard-synth #2. So, I have the XD now and continue to daydream about the Nymphes; I'll set out to allocate for it as my second hardware piece. The XD sounds lovely! I believe that I am hearing sounds out of it, which I don't [exactly] hear from the several VSTs I've compared compared it to so far---I've spent 2 or 3 hours with it insect the unboxing. It's hard to describe, but there's some fizzy presence about XD, like touching the control panel, one might risk electrical shock. I divested myself of a room-full of analogs 10 years ago. I had so many that, had investigating psychiatric authorities entered the room, for example, I would have been removed from my home and taken away, probably for good. The point being, I literally kind of forgot whether or not there was any difference to hear. You can't just hear one on RUclips...you gotta BUY one. Glancing at your site just now, I'm curious: is there a Buy All price for the 12 Korg User OSCs? Focusing on tracks, mixing and polychaining, I can generally wreak less havoc on your channel; I expect anything hardware-connections-wise I might suppose was already considered forwards/backwards by you...,years ago. The student doesn't need to instruct the teacher..
@@watchaddicts1213 Ha! We are all students when it comes to music making 👍 No I haven't got a bundle price but you are not the first to ask so maybe I should come up with something......
@@TimShoebridge Cool. They're bargain-priced, one by one anyhow. No disrespect intended, regarding my inquiry. I think many of us have been conditioned by various software companies...to search for the dreaded BUNDLE. 🙄 Thanks for the consideration. I'll end up with all of them either way, assuming I don't wake up poor one day this week and have to choose Nymphes and return XD, should one of the two be my fate. Not likely. I'm really loving XD. I'm confident I'll find a way to add Nymphes soon enough. I think they'd make a really distinctive sonic pair. Mainly, I truly appreciate all the work you've done, Tim. You've taken both synths from great to GOTTA OWN status! Honorable mention goes to your to 3 TYPHONS setup.
Hey, could you please tell me what kind of stand that is the Typhon is mounted on? It looks awesome! Got the Typhon, love the Typhon, but seeing it flat on the table is.......
Tim. What would you say your favorite Dreadbox synth is? I was trying to decide between the Nyx V2 and the Typhon. What are your thoughts? I like the effects of the Typhon by I like the filter flexibility of the Nyx. From your experience, what synth is more fun and gives you the sounds your looking for. I'm like you in that I like the more smooth, sweet sounds. Thanks.
I'm on the fence. Your excellent video's of the Novation Peak convinced me to get one recently, for a price I couldn't refuse. Now this... I already have the Roland SE-02 and the Pioneer Toraiz AS-1. However your comprehensive review of this little box makes me long for it. It seems very easy to create patches on. But do I need it when I already have those other two of which one needs to go (sold or into the closet) as I'm space constrained. Choices... Thanks for the video!
Btw, if the USB power consumption is low you could easily opt for a USB galvanic isolator. The ones they sell on AliExpress for less than €10 would do the trick. The drawback is they are not high speed devices, but should suffice for MIDI etc. They would also bring down regular USB power supply noise. If it works will depend on the power consumption. Another option is to use galvanic isolators on the audio outputs. Behringer sells a cheap one. However it might color the sound a tiny bit. There are other options, like a better computer power supply, it can even be your monitor or other device. With trial and error ground loops can be found and defeated. But NEVER cut the earth from mains leads! It will get rid of the noise, but it has a great potential to kill you.
@@TimShoebridge No problem. I expect the current draw of the Typhon might be too high for a USB galvanic isolator, I'm not sure. But for €10 it's worth a shot. If it is too high, the option is to get a Behringer HD400 (should be below €30) and put that in between your Typhon's audio output and mixer/audio interface input. I'm guessing you will have a pair of jack cables. Galvanic isolators use small transformer coils to electromagnetically transfer signals over a very small distance (within the transformer). There is no direct path for the current to travel so ground loops are impossible. Thomann sells a rackmounted device named ART T8 which has 8 stereo pairs worth of galvanic isolated inputs and outputs. Related: This whole problem of ground loops was one of the reasons optical fibre TOSLINK was developped, as optical fibres do not conduct electric currents.
It's a general purpose DJ stand. Can be positioned at two angles. The brand is Reloop. Not the cheapest though but I find it really useful in my studio

It's just a general purpose DJ stand by Reloop. You can set it to different angles, It gets used a lot around my studio.

Why don’t more synths have fade ? Roland’s had it forever , even the Bass station 2 has it. It annoys me that my Pro 3 doesn’t.
48:11 that's the X-men cartoon theme melody! :O hahaha
Would it be better to just run ts cables? Or, can they be balanced? Thanks again for your input on a very interesting synth
great tutorial
Hi, Tim! Best video for the Typhon users! Thanks! My question: i also want this "stand" (? dont know the word in english, sorry) for the unit, your bläck one, very comfotable, but in germany i cannot buy it. A tip? Sylvie from germany
Thanks a lot. The stand is by Reloop, I bought it from an online store supplying DJ equipment (sorry but can't remember which one)
Only me, with a question:
The synth setup here, you could substitute the Abyss with the Nymphs and that would work, right ?
Nymphes is Mono Out, but effects and onward out of Typhon are Stereo, so wouldn’t this ALL be good for Nymphes? This morphed into 2 questions…
Got my name on one for mid-October- I’m just torturing myself watching all this Typhon porn, but I cannot help myself!
I feel your pain. I hit the buy button on a Nord Wave 2 last week and I've been watching Wave2 porn and trying not to buy anything else while I wait.
@@walrtbstudios5430 As mentioned, i ordered mine from Thomann, so hopefully they got more in stock than Andertons and didn't sell out the batch. My order said it would be send out the 20th, so fingers crossed.
This really does seem like the synth of 2020. Can't wait to get my hands on mine!
@@walrtbstudios5430 I ordered mine over 2 months ago with Anderson’s, was told October 15th. They now have emailed me and said December? I been bumped and not happy 😬😡🤬🤯
Reading glasses? You want to try using the Hermod :)
Another great review Tim.
Hey Tim . great vid as usual. you caused me to buy one just now. what is the stand you are using? it looks so perfect for the Dreadbox. and are you going to be making an editor for it?
Hi. The stand is by Reloop, just a general purpose DJ stand. And yes I have an editor on my to-do list 👍
That realy a FAT synth!
It would be a monster in Polyphonic with all that modulation possibilities.
And the SineVibe FX its crazy, sound totaly organic. Would be great if they can make a FX pedal to use it with synth.
Purchased! Thanks
I'm wondering if the firmware update fixes the midi cancel problem when you play audio through it? Great review. I bought one today ☺
The sequencer looks powerful but frankly also a pain in the ass. How is it in practice? Fun or frustrating?
Tim! What type of stand are you using for the Typhon, please? 🙏🏽
Hi, It's by Reloop. A bit expensive for what it is but it's a very useful size and is adjustable
@@TimShoebridge Thank you so much for getting back to me. It's just what I'm looking for. Thanks also for your excellent videos.
Can you chain gang them to be polyphonic?
I updated to firmware 4.0 but my computer doesn't recognize it as an audio device or a midi device. The first firmware failed so i did it again and got it to succeed, but it never showed up as an audio device. So I went ahead and did the firmware again and it still is not showing up as an audio or midi device in studio or windows. Can you help me?
Sorry to hear of your issue. You're ahead of me, I haven't tried v4 yet. Hopefully someone else can help, but Dreadbox support are great so definitely get in touch with them if you don't resolve it some other way
@@TimShoebridge I got it all figured out, just came back to this video and learned alot more watching it a third time. Thanks for this
I share your opinion on the patches originally present, they are all too "crunchy" and the risk is to direct the purchase too much, or lead people to think that this synth is not good for them. they should have balanced the patches with softer sounds :) are there any "softer" preset collections that you recommend, downloadable online? Thank you
Very late comment, but apparently a preset exists to open the VCA so that external audio can be processed by the effects. @Loopop explains all at: ruclips.net/video/SBHwzNZxPeU/видео.html
Ehy Tim, if possible, can you give me the model or a purchase link for the stand you are using for the typhon?
We are all students when it comes to music making 👍
No I haven't got a bundle price but you are not the first to ask so maybe I should come up with something......
Excellent overview of the mod section, liked that song, too. Do I hear some Typhon bit-crusher in there?
Thanks a lot. Yes couldn't resist 😁
Hey Tim, great review! What stand do you have the Typhon sitting on?
Thanks a lot. It’s a general purpose DJ stand by a company called Reloop
How does this compare with say Mother 32?
Hey, could you please tell me what kind of stand that is the Typhon is mounted on? It looks awesome! Got the Typhon, love the Typhon, but seeing it flat on the table is.......
Nevermind, got it with a bit of googling. Reloop Modular Stand.
Is there a VST editor out there for this synth?
Thanks.
Is this the original reloop modular stand or is this modified? In photos or videos i only ever see an angle of 90 degrees.
This is an unmodified stand, you can set it to either 90 or 45 degrees
@@TimShoebridge thanks 👍
Excellent !
@@skullhqx Thanks a lot for the tip re. these galvanic isolators, had never heard of them before. Will take a look....
I am in the same situation. I have the SE02 as well, plus a Monologue, Elektron A4 and a Deluge. I will replace the A4 with the Typhon.
😎
Hi Tim - what stand do you have the Typhon on?
It's a general purpose DJ stand. Can be positioned at two angles. The brand is Reloop. Not the cheapest though but I find it really useful in my studio
What stand is that?
