    Many people who've played Sekigahara enjoy it very much, including myself. Such a good amount of tough strategic decisions to make, yet the game isn't very difficult to learn.
    I always thought the Japanese civil war (Senoku Jidai) extremely interesting. The warring clans certainly didn't always stay loyal to their chosen side, sometimes flipping to the other one even during a battle. The loyalty test cards are historically appropriate and can be a real surprise in the thick of it, as they should be. I could easily see Sekigahara's system being adapted to a War Of The Roses (English medieval civil war) setting in a sequel. Would LOVE to see that!

    I remember recommending this one to you a few months ago! Glad to see you got it to the table

      Yours was a voice in a chorus. It seems like in the last year or so I received in comments and messages about a dozen or so people asking me to look at this one. Thanks for the recommendation.

    Sekigahara seems too abstract in nature to justify such a high BGG war game rating...I mean, it's nice and pretty but in the end I'm just moving pretty symbols around curvy lines on the board. The theme is very thin. I could just as well be moving doughnuts and lollipops and just trying to find the matching symbols on my playing cards in an amped up version of candyland. And isn't there any special combat abilities given to cavalry or rifle units besides just stacking bonuses? For example increased range, firepower, movement speed or something? I just don't see how I'd feel like I'm actually doing combat. Looking at my wishlist I wonder if I'd be better off buying Combat Commander or Up Front or Napoleonics, or for great solitaire I wonder if Skies Above Britain would be money better spent.

      I like this game, but never quite fell in love with it. I ended up giving it to a friend when I left Texas.

      These are fair complaints. A bit more theme would have been nice.

    Btw, have you ever played conflict of heroes: awakening of the bear?

      Haven't played Awakening the Bear. I played Guadalcanal a year or so ago.

    Deciding between this and Napoleon The Waterloo Campain. Sekigahara is way up at #4 war game of BGG. Its beautiful, no doubt. Which would you choose?

      Both great games. For my money, I prefer Napoleon.

      I ended up going for Sekigahara first, then a few months later went ahead and got Napoleon. After playing both games I think they are both fun and worth buying. There are positives and negatives on each but i think Sekigahara just edges out Napoleon: Waterloo, for me.
      Napoleon is a deep and grinding game. Its tactics are fun and they really give you a sense of resource management. The reinforcement’s mechanics are great for setting up mini “campaigns” as you back up your spear tip battalion to make a big push to flank your opponent. Or to jump cavalry around and stop their relief army at the pass before the Prussians can get to the town to back up the British.
      But for me it has a tendency to grind. I often get the feeling of “okay, put on a pot of coffee” when a huge slug fest is about to begin. And because I have the third edition, it’s not the prettiest game on the shelf.
      Now Sekigahara, she’s a knockout. I mean this game is beautiful and smooth. I feel like Im driving a luxury vehicle when I play. And the bluffing card mechanics mixed with the blocks on map is working two different parts of your brain. Jumping from abstract risk taking to block resource management is like putting gummy bears in your chocolate ice cream

    Another good review - thanks as usual, Cody!
    How would you compare this to other block games (namely the ones by Columbia Games), though? Do you think it's better than Napoleon: The Waterloo Campaign or Julius Caesar...?

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you. I think they are very different. About the only thing that is the same is the fact that you have wooden blocks and there is fog of war. Battle systems, damage, and movement are all very different. I wouldn't even really put them in the same category.

    • @micheleb1421
      @micheleb1421 5 лет назад +1

      Aha, I see, thanks!
      But which one of the three would you save, if you had to? Or, better: how would you rank them?

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer  5 лет назад

      Michele Battig Waterloo is probably #1. Not sure about the others. I’d probably put Caesar next but only because I like the theme better.

    This is a neat little game in a cumbersome big box. I would play it more often if wasn't for the weight of the box and the components. I do carry a lot of games from home to club and vice versa and Sekigahara just usually stays home because I have other, more logistics-friendly 2-players. Which is a shame as it is a really nice game.

      Its bulk and scope is perfect for catching the eye of the passers-by at the club however. Everybody who sees it played looks like they are asking themselves "Why don't I play block games?" in their heads haha.

      Big box for sure- especially for such a simple game. Nevertheless, it's a lot of fun.

    Agree on all points cody, not the best, but a very very good one.
    Question, have you played Washingtons war from GMT? I would to like see review of that.
    Also I would like to see a video of Wir Sind das Volk, which I think hace the best version of Card driven game mechanic (Twilight Struggle, Empire of the Sun, Wilderness War, Washington’s War etc,)

      I've played Washington's War and have a copy of it. Maybe somewhere down the line I'll get to a review. We'll see. I'd like to play Wir Sind das Volk. Again, maybe down the line. Thanks.

    I also have a brother who speaks Japanese. He lived there for two years, but he has no interest in this or any other board game.
