  • We made another trip to beautiful Beaufort, NC and took a Paddle to the Shackleford Banks to see the Shackleford Horses. The wild horses are beautiful animals who descended from Spanish shipwrecks around the 1500s and have been on the banks ever since. We rent kayaks from our friends at Beaufort Paddle (www.beaufortpad...) to locate these wild horses.
Beaufort is a small historic town along the intracoastal waterway on the Eastern NC shores by the outer banks. The Beaufort Inlet is the location of the wreckage of feared pirate Blackbeard's flagship Queen Anne's Revenge and he had a residence that still stands in the picturesque town. It is the 4th oldest town in North Carolina. Beaufort is host to the annual Big Rock Blue Marline Offshore Fishing Tournament. It's Front Street shops, boutiques, restaurants, bars, breweries, historic residences and even a graveyard or two is idyllic and charming. You can paddle out to a beach with no one around, or stop by and catch live music at the Dock House, or find Back Street pub or grab some Clam Chowder at the Rhumbar or an amazing dinner at Beaufort Grocery Co or a myriad of other places.
