  • Equitopia teamed up with U.C. Davis veterinarians Sarah le Jeune, DVM, DACVS, DACVSMR Professor of Equine Integrative Sports Medicine and radiologist Mathieu Spriet, DVM, MS, DACVR-EDI, DECVDI to investigate what changes occur in a horse's cervical vertebrae (neck) when its head and neck are in front of the vertical (neutral position) and when the head is extremely behind the vertical (hyperflexed). If you watch horses play, you'll see them do every position we ask them to hold their bodies in. Only, they most often only hold them for brief periods, not the extended time we request.

"We're seeing that we have more flexion, so more stress, on the joints. There are, biomechanically, a lot of things going on in the neck that probably aren't ever happening naturally for a horse. It's an interesting question and I think we need to dig deeper."
