Mesmerizing. These acetylene or carbide lamps lighted the temporary stalls and carts selling fruits, spices, toys and sweets in India many decades ago. In those days (1950s and 1960s and even 1970s) electricity had not reached some parts of cities and the whole of rural India but trade under the acetylene lamps was perfectly possible due to intense white light. Great, brought back child hood memories.
Exactly. In rural India the carbide lamps and kerosene lanterns are used up to the late seventies. I have used it in my childhood days. Its mechanism was very simple and village blacksmiths manufacture it. This excellent video reminds me of my childhood days. Thanks a lot.
They were also used on early motorcycles and cars. Some of the Veteran cars, that take part in the annual London to Brighton run, are still fitted with them.
I knew it had potential when I first saw it but now I’m sure it’s better then new since it was a utility light it wouldn’t have been this polished new! I do want to warn you about lead safety tho, if you ever plan to sand or polish any soldering don’t use a dremel it makes the lead go airborne and you can breathe it in also you don’t want to get lead in your shop, instead use a wet sanding method with as little water as possible and do it over plastic and some rags so you can wrap it all up and throw it away! Keep it going and keep it safe 😊
Outstanding approach to this restoration! A little too much drama in the editing, don't get too crafty! NIce bench, music, etc. I subscribed because I think even more work is coming which will please so many. Well done!
seen quite a few smaller versions of these used in the old mines in the usa. water hits the carbide and the carbide then gives off acetylene gas. prior to batt powered lights in mines, these were used i believe up till the 50's. before that miners mined by candle light.
I would recomend using citric acid versus HCL as it is much safer to both you and the work, and when your done with it you can use it as ant and weed killer with out harmful side effects.

Si je peux me permettre : Tu gazes ! Donc bravo.
Please don’t add water to HCL like that, you’ll be dispersing fumes and spray from splashing the acid increasing the likelihood of causing burns or inhaling the fumes 😢if you need to, add the acid to water by carefully pouring it in and diluting it safely
Way to wave the white flag and go with gels instead of getting actual tinted glass. As someone who likes fomenting conflict, I just wanted to say that. Red glass costs more because real red glass uses gold. Honestly, I'm surprised, with the quality of the rest of your restoration, I would have gone with real glass. Yes, I'm just poking fun, I know France and America are long time allies. We could use your experience in dealing with despots lately.

Don't clean brass with HCl, it reacts with the zinc in the alloy, which makes the copper show.
effectively :o
