As someone who’s been caught in a thunderstorm on the side of a mountain during a 3 day hike . . . I can tell you it’s way harder to start a fire in the rain (or shortly after) than most give it credit for. Get out and practice these skills. Most gimmicks do not work. What saved us on the trail was that one of the guys had a tube of fire starter paste. That was the only thing that held a flame long enough to dry anything out. First thing I did when I got home was add a tube of that to my fire kit.
A small bottle of highly flammable hand sanitizer in gel form works as well. You can also disinfect wounds with it or sanitize you hands if you get diarrea and run out of paper. It is very inexpensive.
I usually carry a few tea candles and some old strips of sock soaked in wax for if I need a bigger burn. The candles can always double as a light source or easy cooking if I'm warming a can and the wax socks have never ceased to get a fire going. With wet, it is about quantity once you get something going and cheating to the getting something going stage is totally called for. Just quadruple the quantity of fuel you would normally gather in each size and keep it piled thick. You will lose a lot of heat to cooking the wood you will later be burning. If you really NEED the heat, make an elevated rack (like a table) so that your drying wood is elevated above the fire and then pull it down to feed the fire with. This will also reduce the steam/smoke you produce as well as give you better access to your heat at the cost of drying your wood slower. This is also a good strategy if you think there will be rain as you can use it like a roof to protect the fire (still pile it up like you would for any other rain underneath).
