This is a great explanation of how to move things up a bit over time. I completely SUCK at FTP Tests. All last year, my training stagnated because my FTP tests didn't really move much while my zone 2 was getting stupid easy (more like recovery rides rather than zone 2) so I bumped my zones up just a tad and now everything feels more like a workout rather than just spinning on the bike. Appreciate you explaining this from a different perspective and giving me a "warm fuzzy" about doing what I did!!

I think the skill of coaching is helping the athlete understand the concept. By choosing Bob's numbers and expalaining it in simple terms is makes it more relatable to the everyday casual road or gravel cyclist. Must log back into Skool and check the Longevity of Motion course.

I got an indoor trainer and so now can work out my ftp and power zones. I feel like my zone2 is already further along because of previous years commuting and now running.
I prefer this way of testing, no pressure and these measurements are taken anyway. Now they more useful and make the rides abit more interesting

My HR zone 2 is 129-144bpm, when riding on my smart trainer I keep my eye on hr to stay around 135-140, in the middle. Do an ERG workout to stay at a certain power that keeps your hr at 135-140. Over time you need more power to get your hr up.
But dont only do zone 2. Do also other zones, increase power and train your anaerobe zones as wel. For every 4 trainings, do 3 zone 2’s and 1 hard workout for other zones.
    Things will shift very soon.
My zone 2 increased 20 watts in 4 weeks for a 2h workout. Went from 155 to 175. Aiming to get to 200. (3w/kg).

I haven't got power meter pedals, but I have a hill climb that used to take me over an hour to get from start to finish. I do this every other month, it now takes me 38 minutes and that all depends on weather conditions & loads of other factors. Average heart rate down, average speed up, intervals and grinding ( not the dance type ) have definitely helped, thanks coach👍

I'm coming back from a minor procedure and some subsequent complications that kept me off the bike for about 4 months. Although I seem to be just about back to my pre-op fitness baseline, I still want to stick to endurance for a while longer before pushing hard for new highs. That said, I need fresh zones but have been procrastinating on the FTP test for obvious reasons. This feels like it could be just the ticket to dialing in my zone 2 more closely than my current guesstimates, and giving me some moderate goals to reach for without having to do the whole "spin till I'm about to throw up" thing. Looking forward to trying it out!

This is the best description of zone 2 application and testing I’ve come across, thanks Coach!
One question - to progress the improvement in Z2 apart from increasing the time 60mins, 70mins all the way up to 120mins, could you use the identified target watts per kilo and set intervals of 3-4x 15-20mins/3-2min RBI, and then slowly reduce the rest period or increase interval length?
    Thoughts Coach.

Funny thing is my FTP ramp test gave me a 200W result, but since I'm a stronger at sprinting I think it might be a tad high with my current fitness coming off the couch for 10 years, but this is a really good way to measure progress in a sustainable way, thanks for the idea! I've always used long ride days as my barometer for improvement since they are generally mostly zone 2, but this is a great way to gauge if your training is effective and easily repeatable which I really like. Also, when you say zone 2 specifically I assume you suggest to measure heart rate between 60%-70% of reserve MHR using the Karvonen method? Thanks!

Do you mean peak ie reach 156 later in the ride in future repeat tests? Also, why, when he first did test 3, would his HR peak after only 42 mins? Wouldn't it continue to rise, even by just a little, as the ride continues? Thanks
