    COMMENTARY:
Our country is more divided than it’s ever been. Whichever side of the divide you’ve been on, it’s felt bad, it’s felt ugly, it’s felt heavy and hateful. And it’s been exhausting and demoralizing for all of us.
We’ve always had philosophical disagreements as to how we should approach our most difficult problems. But we used to share a common base of factual reality from which to debate our differing solutions.
We can’t begin resolving our most pressing issues until we can agree to return to a common world view. We must be led by facts, honesty, and transparency. And we must be led by someone who honors the truth, and respects those on the other side of it. Only then can we return to civility and decency. And only then can we start moving forward again instead of allowing ourselves to be dragged backwards any further.
    LYRICS:
    Tear the world in half
    The haves from have-not halves
They've built a fire between us
And hoped like hell to raise the Phoenix
    Tear the world in two
    The truths from the half-the-truths
The lies and the bad disguises
From the facts and Nobel prizes
    These were once good lands
Of good neighbors and good friends
We used to fight like dancers
    One call with different answers
    These were open lands
And strangers were our future friends
    But fences make for consequences
We’re prisoners of our own defenses
    Now our heart’s been broken
Lost our way but found it stolen
Hidden in a storm of nothing
    A hurricane of newsmen blushing
    Now our eyes are bleeding
Tears of the loss of reason
A pool of our own objections
    Honest men with no reflections
    Here’s the choice my sister
    Gentle warrior, fierce resistor
    Fill the sky like blackbirds
Or sit and watch the world spin backwards
    Here’s the choice my brother
    Old soldier, different drummer
March hard to break the borders
Or stand guard the old world orders
    Here’s the choice my child
    Raise your hands and reconcile
While the king kneels down before us
It’s time for you to rise in chorus
It’s time to set our anger free
It’s time for facts to shade beliefs
It’s time to name the new north star
It’s time for flames to skewer the dark
It’s time to shake the voting booth
It’s time for us to scream the truth
    Now’s it’s time my friends
Time to make us whole again
    Just as the world revolves
Let’s get these broken days resolved

Just to be perfectly clear . . . I DID NOT monetize this video with ads. RUclips changed their terms of service, allowing them to monetize any video they choose, whether or not the creator is in the ad revenue program, and whether or not the creator wants a video to be monetized. So I'm sorry you're forced to watch an ad before my video. And fuck RUclips.

Danny, this is an anthem for our time. You capture our division and hurt and challenge us to come back to the table to join as whole again - every word in this song is important. Thank you for wiring and sharing this now. I hope you'll do another onine concert soon - we need truths like this told to us repeatedly, and the love behind them, so much. You are amazing, my friend.

Despite only being 30, I'm the "Old Soldier" you mention. I have spent time (And in the past been convinced by) both sides of the divide. I'm a Centrist and despite being British have always seen sense in the middle ground. Kudos to you good sir for a fine message well put.

Few songs have ever brought me to tears. This song just got added to the list of songs that brings me to tears. 2020 has been the worst year in my 47 years of being alive. I weep for the future when I look at my 6 year old daughter.

the world seems to keep rotting around us. there are riots in the streets and innocent people harmed and dying. it's pride month-- the anniversary of yet another riot decades ago. fights are necessary for change. involvement and firm beliefs and the willingness to push forward regardless of challenges help shape a future that's more loving and accepting for everyone.
i'm laying in the dark, 11pm, considering the world and all its evils, and this song keeps playing in my head. i visited it and within a few second of it playing, my eyes were wet. the gentle guitar, forlorn but somehow a bit hopeful. daring to wish for something better, almost.
tonight, when i heard 'here's the choice my sister, gentle warrior, fierce resistor,' it hit me a little deeper than it previously had. something about being a gentle soul, but still fighting for what's right. being both. and then the following lyric, the inaction=negative action... i'm not sure. it makes me want to Do something, something that matters. i share posts, i donate, i sign petitions, but it feels like nothing. and yet i'm not sure i'd have the courage to actually fight if given the chance. i hope i would. i hope i could be gentle to those who need it as well as fierce for them when their oppressors struck. i hope i could be both. i hope i will be.
i don't think this song will ever stop being relevant. i don't think it'll ever not make my heart ache. i hope that some day the world may be less split in two.

What's sad is that a lot of people talk about unity while being just as divisive (if not more so) than the side they oppose.
I respect everyone who respects me. But when people call me a white supremacist facist nazi for supporting a president democratically elected on a platform that resonates with tens of millions of good, normal people of all races, backgrounds, faiths, genders, ect., I'm going to defend myself. I'm black and I can say with a certain degree of confidence that I'm never going to get beaten up because of my skin color. But there are states and cities where I might get beaten up for sporting a MAGA hat by some Antifa thug. I'm sorry, that's where the real intolerance is taking place right now.
I wish we could all go back to a time when we could disagree on things and still treat each other with respect. We're not going to have unity until that happens. And it's not going to happen until people stop with the Trump Derangement Syndrome. I really want to believe people can look at a politician and his electorate and disagree with them on a lot of issues but acknowledge that not every single thing about them is bad. I really want to believe people can try to not mindlessly swallow all the hateful misleading garbage that the mainstream media spews out.

@@DylanNes I'm sorry. It's just that RUclips gives me three choices: thumbs up, thumbs down, or a heart (which I take to mean: "I agree" or "I disagree" or "thank you for the sweet sentiment" respectively) . . . and none of those seemed quite appropriate. I'm with you totally on some of your comments . . . ie treating EVERYONE with respect who is respectful. I'm absolutely willing to sit and have a respectful conversation with people whose opinions I disagree with. I love to have my ideas challenged, even. And I love to challenge others. It's how we find the holes in our thinking.
But I struggle with other parts of your comment . . . ie the "Trump Derangement Syndrome." There's just simply too much undeniable evidence that Trump is pathologically untruthful and deceitful for it be called a "syndrome" when someone refuses to humor his lies as simple "opposing viewpoints." We can't dispute policy with one another rationally when basic reality is in constant dispute.
Anyway . . . I really appreciate your saying your peace in a thread that would likely be hostile towards your perspective. That take courage and I respect that. I also probably don't agree with a lot of your perspective. So RUclips needed to provide a Heart Emoji That's Scratching It's Head While Also Buying A Beer For Each Other And Arguing Vigorously About How We Can Fix The World And Then Hug. I would've clicked that one in an instant.

@@DannySchmidtRUclipsMusic Danny Schmidt Awesome!:) For what it's worth you seem like a really cool, intelligent and open-minded dude and while I only stumbled upon your songs a few weeks ago, your songwriting is probably among the best I've come across (This Too Shall Pass and Stained Glass in particular are masterpieces, just saying). When you're a conservative who's really into folk rock you kind of learn to deal with people fundamentally disagreeing with (almost) all of your opinions. I've been harassed and and assaulted by fans of other bands for casually voicing my opinions but it hasn't really stopped me from doing so.
I can understand why some people/a lot of people (depending on which polls you believe:P) don't like Trump. He can come across as a rude obnoxious loudmouth who bends the truth a lot and picks fights with everyone. But it's worth remembering that confirmation bias, media bias, ect. all play a role in the way people perceive him. An opinion or a disputable truth can be framed to be a stone cold lie. I think we've seen a good example of something like that this week. We've all heard the story that "Trump urges people to drink bleach" when in reality he just asked a kind of lazy and off-handed question to one of his experts during a press conference that actually kind of made sense scientifically as disinfectant substances are sometimes used inside the body. Which admittedly wasn't a smart thing to do, but the media still made it look a lot worse than it was and it undoubtedly changed or reinforced people's opinion of him. We've all read the story that "Trump called coronavirus a hoax" when even left-leaning fact-checkers admit that the video of him saying that was deceptively edited and he never actually said anything like that.
What I'm getting at is that when I mentioned Trump Derangement Syndrome I wasn't really trying to insult anyone who doesn't like him. But there is an irrationality to the way a lot of people perceive and react to him and his supporters and the things they say and do. I get not liking Trump. I just wish we could collectively quit this tribalistic attitude where everything the other side does is horrible and wrong. I didn't like Obama, I fundamentally disagreed with a lot of what he did and didn't do, and I thought he lied a lot, but I respected the office of president and his constituency enough to recognize the good things I think he did and to try to understand why a lot of people did like him. I'm sad to say I've found that the left on average doesn't really do the same thing. I suppose that's why I call Trump Derangement Syndrome.
