I had always played my hihats way high but then I saw an old sonic youth performance where the drummer (Steve Shelley) was playing blisteringly fast hihat rhythms and I realized his hats were lower than his tom heads, so I checked this out. Next time I play I'm gonna set my hats low and see how it feels.
Thanks for the video. I was playing with different adjustment heights recently and I figured I’d watch a video. I ended up with a low to medium-low height compare to my snare.
You didn't have to speak, I knew you were Irish by the way you attacked the memory lock on the hi-hat there. "Come on, yeah fooker - bang! bang!" Don't worry - I turn into my dad sometimes too. And good to see you show the tip of the stick on top, or shoulder of the stick near the side, as alternative ways to play, rather than "right" or "wrong".
Before I watch this I'm comment an issue in having. I know most of it is lack of practice but when I'm trying to ghost notes my sticks often hit each other. Then when I try to do rimshots to help make the ghost notes quieter I'm constantly hitting my leg. I feel like I need to raise my snare in my high hat a little bit but I'm scared to touch them because everything else feels really good.
For me I am really short (5'0). and I feel like my hi hat might be too high but I cant really lower it because then my snare drum cant lower anymore. If I lower my hi hat then my snare hand (left hand) hits my hi hat hand as I play
The hi-hat is too limiting even for a rock drummer. It is mostly for some rock and heavy metal bashers. All due respect to Dave Grohl who many laymen think is the greatest drummer in the world but many highly skilled trained drummers would probably say his early work up until around 2000 was all arms and legs, fast flams, and loud smashing of the drum kit. I'm older than Dave and learned to play jazz and then played rock, blues, funk, etc. style drumming for 49yrs - I like drums who bash out the beat then flick the tip or crack the bell of the hi-hats within the beat. It adds to your chops which contributes to a unique style. I speak from experience and I admit to playing some styles better than others throughout my life. I I think am proficient student of music and percussion but not a freakish talent like Jordan Cannata, Omar Hakim, Steve Gadd, Neil Peart, and many other men and Women. (Important point. There are some awesome women drummers (Cindy Blackman) who are really getting the attention they deserve and acceptance playing all instruments in the rock and various musical styles. Seek them out on RUclips. Stay cool and keep learning about drumming and percussion every day. Playing with all 4 limbs and calculating complex rhythms in your head is a gift so be proud of your ability.👍🥁
Love it brother great tips God bless you what is the proper way to play the hihat? I am a really late bloomer I have always had a love for drums and am now building my kit. Trying to tech myself proper techniques and build a firm foundation in playing a full kit and could use all the tips and suggestions I can get. Thank you so much for doing this video it was informative
Get your drum stool at the height where you bass foot starts to bounce on it's own, using its reflexes, then start with your Snare Mind you, this could take years
BrendrumJones Hi. Very true, A guy on here a drummer has a show, similar to yours, he said find that natural knee bounce, and go from there. I wish I knew that 30 years ago, my whole kit came down in height and my playing improved immediately
I prefer my hihat up to shoulder level :) it just creates more room for my snare arm to move freely! But then, I mostly play my aux-hihat on the ride side to avoid crossarming even more.
Chris coleman does not have the same height, arm length, playing style and technique as every other drummer on the planet, I don't think you understood the point of this video.
The high hat height is a bloody personal preference. There is no "right" or "wrong" setting. If i want to have it high or low who da fack are you to tell me that i am wrong. Get a grip and start making real content not click bait titled crap
Hi hat position always been a thing with my playing. After watching your very instructive lesson now cracked it. Cheers Brendon.👍🥁
No worries im delighted it helped

Do, it’s all about experimenting and seeing will somthing work

Youre welcome, sometimes I like to go to extremes and then pull back , it’s amazing what you will notice. Chat again 👍🏻

@@lobbyrobby hey, I think you should move things around. Its going to move over time anyway, you may as well experiment
every imaginable aspect of drum kit setup is subjective
sure
Thankyou it's was really helpful
Thanks for saying so, glad it helped chat soon 👍🏻

Is its that the stand wont go any lower? you might have to get a better one.
@@BrendrumJones yeah the snare one wont go lower but Im not sure there will be a stand that goes that low. And if there is I cant afford it right now
@@BrendrumJones how do I tell if my snare is at the right height?

Thanks for the drum exhibition, but how do we adjust the bloody thing, Governor?
Ahh man it depends on the hi hat stand but I do have a video on that somewhere
What's your opinion on Dave Grohl's hi-hat height during his Nirvana tenure? Or William Goldsmith's in early Foo Fighters?
Perfect if I was playing shoulder and rocking out night after night that’s a great place for it 👍🏻

It sure will, and it will change as your style changes and as you get older

I think my hat is too high.. its an edrum so it has a thick controller that adds up to the height.. Can I just cut the smaller tube shorter?
Hey, I’m sorry I’m not familiar with that so I can’t say.
Thanks
You're welcome

Hey, which part are you referring to?
Right At The 2:42 Mark About...You Get That Rapid Sound
@@dadalovesshannon4103 ahhh yeah, combination of technique of doubles and the ease of the location of the hi hat

@@BrendrumJones Thats right :)
Michael Bordin, Travis Barker, and Carter Beauford all make their hi htat height work for them
Yes they do,
Theres not a correct one however you like it
What ?
Chris Coleman plays high like the first position. Different strokes for different folks, take this advice with a grain of salt
