  • Mr. King, author of over 350 written works, is the 2003 recipient of The National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, awarded each year to a writer who has enriched our literary heritage over a life of service or a corpus of work. He is a six-time winner of the Horror Guild Award; the holder of the 2007 Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award; and the recipient of O. Henry, World Fantasy, Us Magazine and countless other awards since he began publishing in 1967.
    His latest novel, 11/22/63, published by Scribner, hits stores on November 8, 2011.
    Savannah Book Festival board president Stephanie Duttenhaver says, "We are extremely excited to welcome Mr. King as the guest of honor at our Fifth Annual Festival. His willingness to appear is a testament to the reputation and growth of our festival, which now rivals any festival in the country for talent, author access and charm."

    There is no one on this planet, aside from friends and family, who I love and cherish more than Stephen King. He was the inspiration for my writing career. When our great King of fiction is gone, it's going to be like losing a father. Thank you and bless you for uploading this!

      You know, Stephen being a former high school English teacher, whenever I hear your question, it always sounds like you reversed the classic "Teacher-to-Student" question: "What is your favorite book and why?" You flipped the roles on the Teacher! LOL! :D

    To be that famous and talanted...with tons of confidence etc. and still be so damn humble all the time! I wish more people could be like that. Love that rare combination in human beings. If I ever become famous in some way (yeah right..haha) I would try to be like that. What an inspiration he is!

      If you know his personal story, then you know exactly why he's like that. He had to WORK his fingers to the bone at a typewriter to make his mark. When you've truly earned what you have through hard work, it keeps you humble.

    I love Stephen King. I started reading his work in 1984. I started off with Skeleton Crew,a collection of short stories, The Stand, and Pet Semetary.I have bought every book but, being the slow reader that I am, I have not read them all yet.1st thing on my bucket List. Because to me, you haven't lived until you read Shephen King..The Dark Tower series is my favorite. Thank you so very much for this upload. To this true fan and "constant reader" It was a most enjoyable view of my favorite author.

    I know this will sound weird to some people and to some they will sadly know where I'm coming from. Stephen King saved my sanity as a teenager. When i read his books i could leave my horrible home life for a few chapters at a time. When people talk about his drug/alcohol abuse. He's human. Shit happens. Mr. King is the one who told us He had a problem. He's overcome His addictions and is a better man for it. Be like Stephen King!

    27:51 -- I remember when you could smoke in a hospital bed. You could always find the nurses' station. You just looked for "the cloud". Speaking of clouds, I remember when you could smoke on a passenger jet. Polite people, of course, would turn on the exhaust fan to draw the smoke out...but still. And, it seems like only yesterday, there wasn't a restaurant, in the whole world, that didn't have, at least, a "smoking section". You could send your kid, down to the store, to buy your cigarettes FOR you. No one batted an eyelash.
    What's REALLY interesting (particularly if you happen upon the topic of "gateway drugs") is that "candy cigarettes" & "bubblegum cigars" are STILL being sold in many of the convenience stores that I frequent today. Considering all that we know about the dangers of smoking, it seems bizarre, at best, that we are continuing to target our kids with this shit. What's next? Candy syringes? Candy Kalashnikovs? Candy K-Y Jelly?? I guess some things change, and some things don't.
    In any case, God Bless Stephen King...He is solely responsible for getting me to read for pleasure. I had always been a fan of monsters, and used to buy those models (Frankenstein, Dracula, etc.) that you would glue together, and then, paint. But I had had never been a big reader. On a whim (I think it was the cover that attracted me), I picked up a copy of 'Salam's Lot". 'Didn't even know who Stephen King was...'Had never heard of him. But the description, on the cover, was enough to hook me. 'Spent the next several weeks sleeping with the lamp on...Not a nightlight, but a FULL-ON lamp. I felt quite certain, at the time, that it would save my life.
    Stephen, I hope that you & your family are well, and that things are good wherever you are.

    As much as I like the movie, the book does bring lot more to the reader - the character depth, the horror. I wasn't scered of the visuals in the movie, but the book did scare me at some times. What was strange in the book was the Danny character was sometimes having thoughts of five years old and sometimes thoughts and vocabulary of an adult. Also the ending is more believable in the movie, its hard to believe that five years old driven to hallway with no way of escaping can reason with murderous supernatural entity and prevent it from killing him... But thats only me. I enjoyed both and like the book much better. Sometimes I borrow visuals from the movie though, especially the hotel interior and exterior.

    I think the Shining movie/ book debate is a false dichotomy. The film isn't an adaptation, it's a stand alone film (and a masterpiece in it's own right) with completely separate thematic concerns from King's book.
    So please, just appreciate them for what they are.

    • @Pheonix8877
      @Pheonix8877 5 лет назад +1

      I think that’s fair and I try to think about it the same way. On the other hand you can’t really blame people for feeling that way/having that debate considering they are titled the same and the film is absolutely an adaptation of the book- I mean they share the same general plot, it’s literally said in the beginning that it’s based off of the Stephen king book. There’s always going to be a debate over this kind of stuff when it comes to book to movie transitions. But I do agree with you that the film is absolutely stellar and that it should be judged on its own merits. This is the advantage of being a non reader, never having to see a beautiful, well thought out book condensed and morphed.
