  • 120mm apo scopes were once a rarity. But today there are many choices and that I think is a good thing. It's a great time to be shopping for a scope of this caliber. I'll cover a lot of my first impressions in this video about this great scope.

A side by side image comparison of the 120 mm achromatic doublet vs 120 mm Askar triplet vs 122 mm Svbony triplet would be FANTASTIC :)

I really appreciated your review of this scope. I have been contemplating this scope along with a couple others in the 120 mm aperture range to replace my WO 81 mm scope. This one has just gone higher on my list of options to trial.

Nice review Ben, you’re looking super. I’m selling my Askar107 as it’s just too heavy for me, but it’s an amazing scope. Clear skies forever and a day

Awww ... sorry to hear that, AW. I love my Askar107 with the AM5 mount. Hope you find something lighter that suits you.

I am loving my Askar 103 APO, which uses the same tube and focuser. I've been getting great images with an ASI533MC camera and the 0.8x reducer/flattener.

I wonder which one will deliver better images, the 122 mm Svbony or the Askar 120 mm :)

I’m in the market for one of these. Thank you for the reviews. I watched the one on the Svbony 122 and this one, both competitively priced. Which one would you recommend?

I an interested in buying the Svbony 122 mm triplet, now its just 1399 $ which I think is an excellent price but I really wonder how well it does against the 120 mm Askar.

Really looking forward to the final review! Btw as configured (with a reducer or flatenner I guess?) does the camera clear the AM5 tripod legs close to zenith with the pier extension? It looks like it does but not sure. Thanks!

Thanks for the nice review, what is the length of the larger piece if the scope is split in two parts? Is is easy to put the two parts together?

I read about the loss of files on ASIAIR and I have always saved the images locally and then moved the thumb drive to my stacking PC.
Looking at the 120 APO so I can not wait until your full review with images.
The 140 (and 185) both look nice but are prices outside of my range.

Will the dew shield length be an issue with stray light??? I’m really considering this scope but I’m worried about neighbors lights!!

The multi coatings on this scope are good. I would probably make an extension though. Like I said in the video.

I make my dew cap extenders out of black cardboard wrapped around the original dewcap, you can extend it to a metre whatever you like, it really works very well, and stops any street lights in neighbours lights hitting the objective lens, I make my dewcap, by wrapping black cardboard around the original dewcap cut it to size and tape it then I wrap that around with a white piece of cardboard and then I wrap the whole thing in clear contact which stops it from getting wet, it puts no weight on the telescope the cardboard I use is art cardboard that you buy from the art shop, they come in 1m squares or something, they're about a millimetre thick or so, they work very well I put one on my finder scope because it doesn't have a dewcap at all, I hope this is helpful happy scoping, and I bought my askar 120ml triplet about 4 months ago and I think the engineering is excellent the optics are very good it is portable and I love it, I use it optically I do not do photography, I am a visual astronomer, cheers.

Yo looking good, let's continue kicking the big C in its figurative nuts woooooo
You said the tube can be shortened; does that mean it can become a wider, faster OTA by removing what's effectively an extension tube? Or optics do not work that way (ie the elements should be designed for a specific FL from the get-go, otherwise you'd need correction glass at the end when you physically shorten the tube)? Also - would putting a printed rotation scale on the scope ring and a big honking arrow on the tube be a good substitute for what's on the focuser?
Re them cable harnesses (or cable sneks, as we like to call em), you might want to consider using those self-sealing nylon mesh sleeves (via thin plastic ribs embedded in the nylon net that spring back to shape) used by computer modders/auto detailers instead of those white plastic cable management wraps. These sleeves are thinner and lighter, might save all your ports from unnecessary weight bearing work. And it comes in a variety of colors (y'know what they say about red gear, right - the red makes things go faster XD)
