Hey, fam! Welcome back to another episode of Real Talk with me, Charlotte Dobre! Today, we're diving into a juicy AITA (Am I the A**hole) dilemma: canceling a wedding last minute. Yeah, you heard that right!
Picture this: You've got the dress, the venue, the cake-all set for the big day. But then, out of the blue, you hit the brakes and call off the whole shebang. Drama alert, am I right?
In this episode, we're delving deep into the murky waters of wedding etiquette and personal boundaries. Did our protagonist make the right call or commit a major faux pas?
Join me as we unpack the situation, weigh in on the moral conundrum, and maybe even learn a thing or two about love, relationships, and self-respect along the way.
So, grab your popcorn, settle in, and let's get real about canceling weddings because sometimes, you gotta do what's best for YOU. Don't forget to sound off in the comments: AITA for canceling my wedding last minute? Let's get the conversation going!

Hi, I'm Charlotte Dobre. I'm an actor, reactor, singer and sometimes (not really) comedian. On this channel I do reactions, commentary and occasionally I make a joke or two. I love poking fun at social media, weddings, entitled people, tiktok and OF COURSE petty people. I upload daily, usually 7 days a week, unless life gets crazy or I get lazy. Come hang out, it's a good time.

I knew someone who wanted a small wedding but was bullied and into inviting EVERYBODY so they finally gave in and did invite all the friends and family but changed their wedding date to a Wednesday at 3 and most people couldn't make that dated work but the people they originally wanted.. That is brilliant! Have the wedding at the most inconvenient day and time. Only the most loyal and dedicated will attend.
As others mentioned, this would only work in the US. In countries, e.g., the EU, where they essentially shut down during the summer months and everyone leaves on vacation, this might not work.

Man my workplace combines sick days, vacation days, etc into our PTO balance. If you're sick, they take your day from your PTO balance whether you like it or not. Sick for a week? Guess you're not taking that vacation or taking time for yourself! That time you were sick? Yeah that was the time you got to yourself.

If someone canceled their wedding to be with me through trauma, I think I'd be devastated. I'd feel like everyone in the wedding party is put out because of my pain, and that me losing my baby caused a MASSIVE spiraling chain of events to play out. That would be the worst

Has the definition of getting eloped changed? When you elope you run off and get married and tell no one. A wedding with 20 is still a wedding just a small one.

Yeah. I'm also kinda surprised that I'm hearing that being used as a term for a "small intimate ceremony" .
Here in the Philippines, elopement is when the couple runaway to get married in secret especially if one or two sides are against the union.

    • @youdontgetaname2904
      @youdontgetaname2904 25 дней назад +11

A little, it doesn't carry as strong a "running away" connotation anymore. It used to be just a couple finding a priest and making it as fast a possible then running off in a carriage, now it's more of just going to the courthouse and leaving when the vows said amd paper works done.

The girl who cancelled the deposits after her brother’s fiancé made that cruel comment about Toast - she did not need to warn anyone that she was going to do that. The brother’s fiancé should have expected it after saying something so horrible. She contacted her brother right after to let him know.

They took a "vacation" and shocked everyone when they got home by announcing that they got married! (A beautiful pre-planned wedding on the beach) Then they held a big dinner at a local restaurant for the family to celebrate. While everyone was shocked, there was nothing they could do, except show up to dinner. They were so happy with their stress free wedding.

Something similar to the sister's miscarriage one. One of my classmates got married last year and two days before the wedding her sister gave birth to her twins. My classmate was sad she couldn't be there but they had FaceTimed her when they were getting ready and had the photographer take pictures of that to show sister was still a part of things. A year later the family all got together in their wedding outfits and had a "belated family photo shoot" with the sister and her now 1-year-old twins. The photos were so sweet and I'm sure the wedding day has so many happy memories because they found these little ways to still include the sister. Basically, my point is, I'm glad the lady went through with the wedding because there's still ways to include people who can't physically make it to the wedding.

Even worse are the ones that do it intentionally, to try and make you think about what all the different endings could have possibly been. I am 40 this year and I don't have time for that, lol. My husband and I recently eloped because my dad kept giving specific requests that I could only get married during certain months for his convenience and he wanted to be part of XYZ. I also got stressed thinking about people trying to take pictures and getting in the way during the ceremony, so after much thought, we decided to elope in the Colorado mountains and it was gorgeous. We still plan to have a reception, but we’re already married at this point so I’m way less worried about other people now.

Far too often, the wedding becomes about the day rather than the start of a life together, which is why I think it can get out of hand, because people forget that they are messing with their lifelong relationships. I wanted to get married in my hometown, small and have a catered (quicker and easier) backyard BBQ, simple. After my mom canceled my wedding, twice, which my husband and I were paying for, and I found out she was trying to go behind our backs and add and change a bunch of stuff, my husband and I got married in his hometown, with my in laws helping with everything. My extended family chose not to attend for the most part, most likely because my mother lied to them (compulsive), but also because it was a 10 hour drive. At the end of the day, my husband and I got married, we had people who cared with us, and my mother learned her interference would not be tolerated.

A coworker of mine was sick of family drama and arguments from both families wanting THEIR way.
So she and her (now) husband went to Lake Tahoe with her closest sister and his closest brother.
They got married on the Tahoe Queen (paddlewheeler replica) by the ships captain . (There had been a lot of arguments about which family’s church they would get married in as well😂. )
It was in the winter so it wasn’t busy and the pictures from inside the cabin were gorgeous.
They had a reception later and it took a lot of the pressure off since both families realized that there wouldn’t be any celebration if they didn’t behave.

There is one exception for a day before cancelation, when even before marriage you constantly fight and can't compromise. A friend did this with his fiancé because he didn't want to be divorced soon after and knew they would be better off with other people. She needed a pushover and wouldn't compromise or meet in the middle and he hated confrontation and was passive aggressive. So he then called it off while admitting it was an a-hole move but better in the end.

Glad the bride with her sister’s miscarriage went through with it. I can empathize with her sister with the pain both mentally and physically you don’t want to be around anyone. However, I can understand what the bride is going through also. Mine wasn’t a bridal party member, but instead my grandmother. I was VERY close with my grandmother and the night before my wedding, a few hours before my rehearsal my grandmother was rushed to the hospital unconscious. She had a UTI and became septic. She finally woke up right before our rehearsal. I was devastated and so was she. I did nothing but cry that night, but at no time did I think of canceling or postponing the wedding because I was ready to start my life with my now husband. Instead my husband and I talked at the rehearsal dinner and came up with a new plan. After we got married we went to the hospital to see her and our photographer got pictures of us with her. It was very special! We were even asked to walk around a little bit because the ICU was a buzz that a bride and groom were there and everyone got excited and wanted to see us. We obliged. Very happy with my decision to carry on, and even more so because my grandmother died 7 months later. If we had postponed I don’t know when we could have rebooked and she might not have been there at all. You never know what’s going to happen. Tomorrow is not promised so make the most of today!

My mother cancelled her wedding one week before her wedding. She told me she just realized she did not want to spend the rest of her life with that person. This was around 1952. She had to notify each guest of the cancellation. She married my father a year later. Of course, I am thrilled that she did because I would not be here otherwise. Better to change your mind before the actual marriage has taken place than to marry and then have to go through the legal process to get out of it.

Both my husband and I have never been someone who wanted a big wedding and spending a fortune of marriage, so it actually worked out for the best.

I'm only sad my grandparents weren't there and my sisters who were out of state. Unfortunately miscarriages are a very real and unfortunate part of the child bearing process. I feel for her, and absolutely understand her being so devastated about losing it at 5 months along in her pregnancy, but expecting her sister to cancel her wedding because of it is not ok. One in four KNOWN pregnancies ends in miscarriage, that’s not one in four women will have a miscarriage, but that in all pregnancies, 25 percent of the ones we know of will not make it to full term (it is suspected that the number is actually closer to 50%, one in two). And that number was significantly higher before the improvements in our medical technology and such. While I do think we do need significantly more resources for women to help them through this grief and we need to make it more widely acceptable to talk about openly, they can not expect those closest to them to put their entire lives on hold to support them through it.

    • @koolkittykat04
      @koolkittykat04 5 месяцев назад +43

@@jeanams07I just want to clarify that the vast majority of miscarriages occur during the first trimester of pregnancy. In the post, she stated her sister was 5 months pregnant (around 20 weeks), which is in the second trimester, and it makes the loss even more devastating. I’m unfortunately imaging them finding out during their ultrasound appointment to reveal the sex of the baby. :(
That being said, while tragic, I agree with Charlotte that she shouldn’t have cancelled the wedding. A situation like this puts you between a rock and a hard place, and I would be worried about being able to reschedule the wedding at the same venue, getting the same catering, rebooking people’s flights and hotels, etc.

In his case I think the wedding date should have been changed. But 24hrs notice is totally different. It doesn’t matter if you know the risks or if you’ve experienced miscarriages losing a child that close to term is horrific and life changing but to cancel a once in a lifetime time event the day before for something I guarantee her sister will hurt over for years is silly imo.

Somewhat bemused that so many think postponing your own wedding to be with your sister whose baby just died is not ok, but cancelling someone else’s because they said something nasty about a dead dog is fine. That sister who had the miscarriage now has to remember it, and how they missed her sister’s wedding, every time she sees a photo or sends them an anniversary card. Nice. Wedding insurance policies (at least here in the UK) will generally cover rescheduling the wedding for the illness of someone in the wedding party - so not only would have been ok to do that, a company who would actually have to have paid for that would say its ok to do it.

Miscarriage or born it’s a loss of a life. I think that’s pretty major. If it had been a still birth for example then attitudes would be different. If the sisters are close, then could the bride even enjoy her wedding while grieving for and with her sister for the loss of her niece/nephew? I don’t know what to feel about this. 😢 I’m sorry for this lady and her partner’s loss.

Oh this sure rang a bell with me! I had a lot of stress over family stuff while planning my wedding. After getting so upset and not really wanting to be around my family, I canceled mine. We let everyone know that we would be postponing the wedding and then planned an elopement! We went to Hawaii and got married, just the two of us. It was amazing and wonderful. No one else went along and Hawaii was perfect. I would recommend this to anyone!

As a widow I wouldn’t ever ask my sister to skip her wedding. She did have a preplanned vacation the first year I was alone and while I bugged her on her trip checking in I was happy for. I did skip wedding for like the first 2 years after my husband passed and everyone understood. Real family and friends will support you 🖤

The first story is exactly why I didn’t even invite my parents to my elopement. They only heard about our engagement/wedding the day after it happened cause I was not gonna play that game about “well you have to invite your family” with all 7 siblings of mine and all their kids (that’s over 30 people) when we only had space for 20 people. Plus with her OCPD I could not handle her trying to control my whole wedding!
Admittedly these videos from you helped me chose to elope so thanks Charolette! If I have a baby girl I will name her in your honor (if my husband agrees of course)

Because of covid we had a tiny wedding of seven people, me, him, my son and his girlfriend, his Mum, his brother and his sister-in-law. Best day of my life. Nothing to worry about, all enjoyed it very much. We then had a party with lots of people some time later, that was also a lovely, lovely day. We felt it worked out as being the best way to do it.

Poor Toast... I'm sure he had a wonderful life though. Brother's fiancee not liking animals is a huge red flag. I like dogs and cats more than people, and I have more 4-legged friends than 2-legged, I'm in bed surrounded by 3 cats and 2 dogs right now. I can't imagine not having pets, I've pretty much always had at least one dog or cat from the time I was born. (I was starting to get emotional and one of my cats, Lily, just came over to touch foreheads. How can anyone live without that level of pure love?) R.I.P. Toasty boy ❤

When I was younger, I spontaneously said to my sister "Isn't it weird that people feel the need to partner up like they're doing a science project?", expecting her to agree with me. She looked at me like I was insane and I got the message haha. Still, I persist in the notion that I am not the alien, everyone else is.

I used to feel this way too, until I met my now-husband at 22. I never saw myself as someone who would get married while growing up. There's a reason why you marry 'the one', rather than 'one of them'.
All this to say, you may be pleasantly surprised later on! If not, that's okay too. The most important thing is being comfortable with yourself and the life you choose.

Dogs are like children, in the sense that they are open books and deserving of every protection. I was teaching when I got my first. I went to the pound 3 times, which broke my heart but one trip, the animals were not a good fit for my lifestyle, one, the dog I wanted (beautiful brindle collie) was processing for adoption, and the last was my girl, for which I will always be thankful for the volunteers, knowing what I was looking for, for pointing her out. I was looking to give both myself and the dog the best chance of forever. I don’t know if she was my “heart” dog, as I fall in love with every single one I meet, but I think I was her “heart” person. She loved everyone but she could only tolerate being without me for a couple of days. She was absolutely amazing though, beautiful, smart, and just wanted to please, and anyone who looked at her sideways would’ve gone butt over elbows shortly after.
