Frank, I just wanted to chime in here and let you know that I have been a big fan of your work and I have some experience doing headliners, and I have used 3M 90 before, even 3M 98 which I think is discontinued, but I will tell you with great confidence that the glue of choice is Dap Weldwood Landau Top and Trim (HHR - High Heat Resistant) glue.
You can spray it with a 1.8 or 2.2 tip in a gun, or you can brush it, or a combination of the both. Brushing these delicate areas with a non saturated yet plenty tacky brush is an absolute nerve saver.
That glue will NOT give up where I have found 3M just does not last in the medium to long run.
The boat style hung headliners in 80s BMW's are not my specialty, but I have done quite a few multi piece fiber board style headliners, I did do a headliner with a fella, the hung style 80s BMW style you are doing, and I would do it again, the key is if you're doing it 100% yourself, you will have to get out the old sewing machine and use the old liner as a rough (or not so rough) template.
Kindest regards, just keep that glue handy. It is THE BEST glue I have ever used for applications such as this that MUST NOT FAIL.
That said, the 3M is OK probably for this application as it is mostly hung and basically glued on the edges, but the Dap glue I mentioned precisely (not Home Depot red jar Dap Contact Cement) is THE BEST I have ever used. I have not used K-Grip, a competitor glue, but I have used Wurth Rubber Glue, for $35 bucks or so for a tiny jar, you get a 5 gallon pail of Dap Landau Top glue that may last your lifetime. Or at least well past the best by date ;)
I want to try canned storage of it, I think they call them Monotop cans, I haven't invested in those yet, I usually use a glass jar and eventually the glue inside will get old. But a Monotop style metal can should last a good while. The 5 gallon pail never seems to go wrong for storage.
Dap Weldwood Landau Top and Trim - I am not affiliated. It is simply the most robust contact cement I have ever used by a long margin. Not affiliated with Dap at all. Just a great and stinky product (I suggest a respirator, it is potent the solvent mixture).

Call Igor at CATUNED. He has all variations of E30 headliners in 2 different black materials to choose from. I've thoroughly enjoyed working with him through the years!
