- What is the Animals as Leaders Drum Cover Series? It's an attempt to play every AAL track in chronological order on the drums - in one take. It's mainly an exercise for me to develop my drumming again after barely playing for the last 2 years. I'm a bit rusty, that's for sure. After learning the tracks I want to play them as more of a live performance and have fun with it, rather than worry about trying to get everything perfect and using multiple takes like I used to, which means there will be some mistakes/mistiming's, but I'm just rolling with it, perfection is overrated anyway. It will be interesting to see if I can complete the series or crack my brain into the abyss of odd time signatures and get admitted to an insane asylum. I think the latter is more likely...

Thoughts on Tempting Time -
I wanted to do something different bringing the stack in on the crazy part but in the process I seem to have misplaced some kicks, not by a lot, but they're not where I intended them to be.. I suppose you could say I was 'tempting time', heh. I may revisit this part at some point as an exercise to work on separating my right hand from my right foot more, but I'm not too displeased with it as of now.
Let me know what you think of the mix. Took me a while to get it to something I liked. At first I wanted it to be quite raw but it sounded muddy when I added the track, so I upped the processing a bit more. Still trying to keep it live sounding though.
Mix sounds good, and i like the annotations - makes the video cooler cuz not many people talk about whats going through their head when playing
probably the most musical and accurate AAL covers on the platform. this is such an insane project to uptake and i'm gonna be here for every vid. so excited to see someone pull this off. personally i find the mix to be pretty good, but the snare and tom reverb stands out a bit too much to my ears? not sure if anyone feels the same. it feels a little disconnected from the rest of the drum sound and takes away from the organic feel of a one-take drum cover. i find that zero reverb would also be too little glue blending the close mics into the overall mix/room mix, so maybe somewhere in between could be a good spot.
@chaoscinereous It's definitely going to be the most challenging thing I've ever done. Not to mention the cost of sticks and cymbals, lol! But I'll find a way to make it happen. I agree with your points on the mix, this was the main issue, without reverb it sounded meh because my room is tiny. I think it also depends what you're listening on because I'd go to headphones and find there wasn't enough reverb, but listening on phone or laptop speaker it's too much. I think it will take a few attempts to really find the sound that works best for these. I'm trying out different mic placement too, so we'll see how that goes. Thanks for the feedback!

mix is awesome! i do think the overheads could use a bit of a boost but i understand youre trying to sit with the track rather than overpower on top of it

Jesus christ my guy, that was so incredibly locked in and groovy. I had stank face the whole time. Bravo. Mix is perfect btw. I initially thought the crashes maybe could be a bit louder, but I listened again and changed my mind. Snare is sex.

This was after a few weeks back on the kit though, so my muscle memory had come back. I was a lot worse when I started learning this haha. I've got footage of me learning the tracks too that I'll post when I get round to it, so you can see how stuck I get on some parts 😄

Keep up the good work. When you're a non-drummer like me, being able to visualize what the drummer is actively doing helps me appreciate it 1000x more.

Haha, yeah, definitely some really good and challenging parts. I've found myself in difficulty already quite a few times, but I'm slowly getting through it!
I have had some questionable drum covers recommended to me by YT lately due to the new algorithm, but this blew me away man. I played (or tried to) a lot Joy of Motion to practice, and those are insane but some are doable - never dared to try the crazy stuff from the older albums.

Thanks! If I'm not mistaken, I think the first two albums are programmed drums by Misha Mansoor, but I'm not sure about Weightless. Joy of Motion is probably still my fav album and also the first one I attempted tracks from. I think Matts parts on their newest album are the most insane though!
