    Great tips. Almost every metal corner in my house has cracked along the seam from the ceiling to the floor. The house is 30 years old and the joints started cracking after about 10 years. They didn't use tape on top of the metal corner. I'll be repairing every one using your method. I'm a little nervous about how they will look because I'm not a pro but I'm going to give it a shot. I can at least do as well as the original builder if I follow your instructions. Thank you.

    That's exactly the right way to do it. Mr kilt guy. I've been doing drywall for 16 years. Even on new work or repair work I do it the same way and I always always take my corner bead. And I've seen over the years I'd never cracks. My brother taught me everything there was about sheetrock. And one of the bad areas in homes were cracks is on tray ceilings. But if drywall finishers would do it right and tape all their corner bead that would never be a problem 👍👍💪💪. I always enjoy watching your videos you are the real deal

    Fast set can be your best friend if you know what your doing. I love the 5 and 20 minute. 5 and 20 minute if you have the skills, you can wet sponge it when it's hard, not fully cured and smooth it like glass simular to working plaster. We always used that tape on all cornerbead on new construction. What's your preference on setting cornerbead. I prefer nails or screws, you just have to be carefull to set them right and not screw up the bead. Bead that has been set with a bead setter in my experience cracks easier in the future. But a bead setter is quicker.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  4 года назад

      Have you ever scraped the edges off your hot mud once it sets up? (in the middle of your mud, as in your lap marks) I like it much better than a sponge. And I fan dry the edges for a few minutes and I can dry sand them. I've messed with wet sanding many times and don't like the way it comes out.
      Cornerbead, I use staples, but a lot of them. I've never had a problem with it. The clinch on bead setter is just for initial fastening, not to be used alone. Assuming you're talking about this item - amzn.to/2CZkDq9

    A tip if the house doesn't have a metal corner bead, leave the corner inch till last and mix bond with cement 1:1 and one good run will leave you with a perfect corner that's tough enough to take a good whack from a gormless labourer bumping it with a ladder

    When I first started doing drywall back in the 70s, I was taught to run tape on both sides to cover the seam between the cornerbead and the the wall itself to prevent cracking. I don’t know if it worked or not because I never went back to check. But I do know that every time I’ve repaired cornerbead cracks since, the cornerbeads weren’t taped.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  3 года назад +1

      we used to do that sometimes, but truth is, I have seen corner bead with mesh tape on it crack. I now only use tape on corner bead because it solves the whole problem.

    Great content. Thanks for your videos. Question - I noticed that you prefilled, set the tape and then did a first coat of hot mud all in the same go. Is it not necessary to let the mud set between steps?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  8 месяцев назад +1

      With hot mud you’re not worried about letting it dry up so yes you can do more steps in one. Normally you let regular joint compound dry thoroughly partly because it will shrink the whole time but hot mud doesn’t shrink

    Very helpful...I suppose I should use plastic corner bed just outside a shower and perhaps a different type of mud because of the humidity in a bath. ?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  5 лет назад +1

      Well, rusty cornerbead in high humidity areas does happen and plastic would be less likely to rust. I have very little experience with plastic bead honestly as I just dont find it strong enough. But in a bathroom the first thing is I believe ALL bathroom with an actual shower or tub should have an adequate fan. I'm in a rental currently and it has no fan and the paint is cracking, crazing and just not doing well from the high humidity. We shower with the door open, but I'm sure many in the past haven't. And I've fixed LOTS of mold in bathrooms without a good fan. So with a good fan, you shouldn't need to worry about it. As for mud, I think they will all absorb moisture so none are better for that. But I would suggest a high quality primer and 2 coats of semi gloss paint as it resists moisture better.

    This is exactly the job I need to do! Thank you for the great video! One question: The metal corner bead I'm fixing has a little play to it. If I hold down one spot with my finger, I can still get it to wiggle a bit with my other hand a couple inches above or below. I guess this is why it's cracking and I want to screw it down solid. You showed putting in a drywall screw. If you need more than one, how close together can/should they be? I feel like going crazy with them - like every five inches - to make it really solid, but maybe that's overkill?

    good video from a first timer with corner bead. My question is similar to nail pops, I am finding places along outside corner in basement stairwell. Scraping reveals these are places where the original build nail securing the bead at the edge either was secured too tight causing divet in the metal or maybe divet depression in the metal came about over 28 yrs with expanding drywall due to higher moister content....... either way , I never find good videos to how to trouble shoot with depressions in the bead. will fresh mud last at least another 10 years, or should I use mesh tape along the edge including over the depressions. or do I have to cut the whole bead and put a clean 5 foot piece in? thx ie. many bumps of the mud along the corner bead spaced out approx 6 to 8 inches; first area scraped revealed anchor nail at edge producing divet or pitting in the bead metal.

      So sorry to hear that it was a VIRUS.
      Hard to let folks know what Vertigo is about.
      My first time I had it I was fast asleep, woke up in a PANIC not knowing what was going on. Room was spinning out of control and I barely made it out of bed yelling for my wife. She was at work! UGH! Had to find my way to turn on all the lights and make my way to a phone. My Head was spinning out of control.
      Now that I know what it is I know what to do.

    Hey there Guy, I do a lot of these type of repairs in my area as well. Judging from the discoloration that the corner bead has in your video. It's the same for me . The joint compound loses it adhesion and just pops off of the metal bead. It's like the metal corner bead oxidizes either from a manufacturing defect or a thermal situation and the mechanical bond is breached... Thought's? Ps. I added you to the featured channels section of my RUclips Home Page. Keep creating these awesome videos my friend!

      Hey Paul, yeah I think there’s several things going on. One, mud just doesn’t like to stick to metal, and the other issues you talked about are probably right on. Plus I think sometimes finishers don’t pay attention to the instructions on mud boxes because some like Topping mud says it’s not for use on the first coat of corner bead. And then finally, because it’s a corner it’s more subject to being banged up carrying furniture past it, etc.
      And I will be glad to add you to my featured section also. Thanks and will talk to you later. Guy

    Newb-ish question:
    Why did you use Quickset Mud first for that fiba "tape" as opposed to using All Purpose first... and then Quickset next?
    Is this type of scenario not considered taping? I've heard that All Purpose is better to be used for taping, but maybe this isn't the case for this type of situation?
    I have to do something similar... and was under the impression that I should use All Purpose first so my tape would stick better to the bead + wall.... and followed up with Quickset after it dries.
    I appreciate all of your videos and advice!!! Awesome stuff!!!! Thanks so much!!!!

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY

    Thanks this plastic corner bead is popular in texas. l went to work on it today. My question is why does it fail? Hung alot of vinyl siding back in the day and my guess is hot and cold expansion contraction. l guess the installers glue that bead on. l hung board back in the day but never finished a house tape and bed. lm very good at repair work but you know way more than me. Also on alot of repairs l pull the tape and there are voids in the corners or at the peak af the ceiling. Were the tapers suppossed to prefill all these voids when the house was built? l owe you a apology for my rude comment to a vewer. Sorry u had to delete it. You have to be very patient to the weekend warriors. You do a great job and some vewers dont appreciate you. l just taped skimed and texured the hairline cracks on the corner bead. You are right, they can rust. I’ve worked on a lot of them and I can tell you they don’t always rust. I think homes with swamp coolers and high humidity areas will see more rust as the drywall mud will likely absorb some of the moisture.

    Answer this please, why do ALL videos showing mudding of any type use so much product? You wind up taking off 80% of what you make. Why not just make 30% of whey you normally do and cut down on the waste?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  4 года назад

      I have no idea what you mean. You must put it on heavier than you need and wipe it down to the correct profile. No way to put it on perfect, unless you use a mud box designed for this, which run nearly $700 for the box, handle and pump. I've done this for over 35 years, and all drywallers do it this way, so I guess that's why all videos show it that way. Not trying to be rude, just factual, so hope that helped.
      PS: I don't take off nearly 80% of what I put on, more like 20-30%.
