I have a 07 530i that died in the road. 40 min of google searching I found piping case off of the shifter there was a little release on the top right of the skeleton shifter. Super easy to do, super difficult to find the info to spit. This is good advice too, just adding if helps anyone

Great video thanks. Point to note though, the later built cars do not have this feature. This was only on the early F10/11 models with the 8HP transmissions. Build dates in Europe after September 2010 do not have this feature. Real shame.
Marty09933 yeah, you have to jack it up, remove the underbelly and fiddle around with a bolt to get into neutral. Like you are going to do that on the motorway.

Not all Bmw's need the tool also that tool has another feature to release the Electronic Park Brake which is very well hidden. ATM I'm trying to find out how to release the shift lock on series 1 like 116 which has no hidden button under the shifter cover.

Jones Man hello try grabbing it like a six pack of coke or beer and pull straight up or wiggle it a little and pull . It might be stuck on there due to spilled drinks Mine was at one time so after pulling it off I clean in there very good

This does NOT WORK FOR 2012 BMW 525i. I took off all of that and there was nothing under it. Be careful or you’ll break something. This video is for 2011 only or older maybe.
